The way this series develops over the seven series is incredible, it has everything, life, love, lust, friendship, betrayal, and heartbreak and joy, with brilliant characters, storylines and meaningful life metaphors. The show has everything you will love it. S1 of BTVS is a bit cheesy due to low budget etc but you will see it improving leaps and bounds from S2 onwards. An amazing show. Also, I'm glad you've grown from your mother's unfortunate opinions...Buffy is one of the smartest and most well-done shows to have ever been made. It's shaky to start, as it's getting its footing. But it's genuinely one of the most important shows in all of TV history.
@nebulousreactions11 күн бұрын
One of the most important shows in all of tv history is a bold claim, and I'm excited to see why you and others feel that way, because I know you're not alone in that sentiment. Quite a few comments have described how much the show matures after the first season, and I'm interested to see that tone shift. And yeah, the silver lining about my mom being so judgmental and closed-minded is that I learned to NOT be that way. In her defense, I think she was just so wrapped up in having a "gifted child" that she forgot about the "child" part, and didn't want to expose me to things that might dull my shine. So while she kind of sheltered me in a not so helpful or healthy way when it came to media, I do believe it was her (weird) attempt to nurture me to my full potential. So, at least her intentions were good, but as they say about the road to hell. . . yeah. :D

With Willow, she has zero experience with guys, except her two nerdy besties. She's trying to be what she never was before--a girl who "seizes the moment" with a guy, and my guess is that the internal narrative going on here is something along the line of _Okay, I don't really know what I'm doing here, probably this is the sort of thing the cool girls do, and I'm just nervous because I'm out of my wheelhouse, and I don't want this boy--the first one to pay attention to me like this--to think I'm a scared little girl..._ And so on, until he pushes her into the crypt, when she finally realizes that, no, she _is_ actually in danger, but by then, the way out is blocked.
@migmit11 күн бұрын
What I find insane is that in 45 minutes that show introduced no less than 12 characters. Buffy, Willow, Xander, Jesse. Cordelia, Giles, principal Flutie, Buffy's mom. Angel, Luke, Darla, the Master. We get to know all them, their core characteristics, some of their relationship. And we still get a non-trivial story. BTW, this is not a pilot. A pilot isn't a first episode; it's an episode used to convince the network to finance the show. It might be used as a first episode then, but it doesn't have to be. Buffy has an unaired pilot. I think you can find it on the internet, although Joss spent quite some time trying to scrap it from there. It's not very interesting though; the story is a compressed version of that of the first two episodes of the show, special effects are worse, and Willow is played by a different actress (who didn't actually want to be a part of the show and was just standing in).
@nebulousreactions11 күн бұрын
Ah! I was unaware of that difference between a proper pilot and a first episode, so thank you! It's good information to have when doing reactions ;) And what you said is spot on. We did have quite the cast to meet, and the way they handled it was both efficient and effective. I noticed that during editing because I actually had a hard time cutting out dialogue simply because they didn't waste airtime with fluff. That's usually the case with shows that know how to use their time wisely. I wish I were that succinct, but I'm a rambler. This comment is proof! :D
@migmit11 күн бұрын
Did you notice the girl who asked “what kind of name is Buffy?” was herself greeted as “Hey, Afrodisia”? You're going to love Cordelia. Everybody does. It needs time, but it will happen. Xander was in the library, because earlier Willow told him to go there, where “the books live”. The Bronze is an all-ages club. Pretty much everyone there isn't drinking alcohol - which is why nobody is checking IDs. Originally two first episodes were aired back-to-back. People didn't have to wait for the second episode.

This was the beginning of 1997, and so very much not exactly what was otherwise on tv at the time, people will say the first season isn't the show at its best, but it was struggling with a very low budget and very tight time constraints, and it's what got my hooked in the first place, they did what they could with what they had, and sometimes they did a hell of a lot! I just caught a few of your other reactions in the last week or two, and I'm so glad you're giving this a try

Aww, thank you for giving my content a try and subscribing! There were a few places where I could see hints of low budget, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment. I really like how tough Buffy is, not only physically, but mentally. She's scrappy. About five years prior to the TV show, there had been a movie, starring Kristy Swanson. The movie told her origin story. Joss Whedon, who created the character, only had limited say on the direction that the movie would take. The movied fared poorly, but Whedon refused to give up on his idea. And so we got Buffy on the small screen. Giles, by the way, was her second watcher, as her first watcher was killed in the movie version.

Well, I'm immediately subscribing to follow your reactions to this show! It's amazing, iconic, and very much an important piece of pop culture! The first season, it's more or less finding its voice - but this show develops and grows over time and has layers of depth to it that have been studied extensively at an academic level. Not at all stupid! I'm on for this ride, for sure! :) You're wondering about the tone of the show - that very first scene sets the stage. The surprise of the supposed "damsel in distress" being the actual vampire: this is an overarching theme of BtVS. Subverting expectations and tropes - except for the tropes that STARTED here. When you watch shows like Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, etc, you will see so many things that started right here!

I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and are down for the Buffy ride! I'm on episode 4 at this point, and very much enjoying it, and intrigued to see how it will mature over time. Thank you for your fun reaction.Some background might help to understand the show, why it’s set , and the directions of the first season. There was a new television network called The WB. It was on 4 nights a week with 2 hours of new content those nights. The network and its shows reached about 63% of the American public. The network had little impact, no big hits, had a Looney Tunes Frog as its image , and was expected to probably close down by 2002. The network had a financial and critical failure with a dreadful soap like drama Savannah and it need to go away in March 1997. The problem was the network had no money for production, little/ no outside marketing budget, and has to have a show that appealed to a Young Adult demo or they would have to refund pre paid advertising. The network went with Joss Whedon and BTVS ( people say that no one could produce 12 episodes with the next to nothing budget). It premiered on a Monday night in March, 1997. It was shown back to back that night. No expectations, little fanfare , jokes in the entertainment media with several critics not reviewing. Then the ratings came in. Buffy was a smash . The first Season is geared to teens in 1997., and that’s why we loved it. It was the show we did not know we needed.By the 5th week the WB had its first hit and it became the anchor that saved the network and helped promote to mainstream status, Charmed, Dawson Creek, and Gilmore Girls to name a few( the primes for those shows before they premiered 😮). The show with no expectations and a fill in was quickly renewed and was going to have a new season in September of 1997. This back story helps to understand the low budget at first but you will definitely see the increase in budget starting in Season2. The back story will help to understand some of the timing and choices in Season 2 but that later if you continue. To understand the show…. The title is almost every episode … Buffy( fun& humor) The Vampire ( supernatural) Slayer( action) . You get that every time. It is the story of a girl struggling and learning how to become a strong, independent, emotionally intelligent, morally strong, and loving woman. It is a great show. Hope it’s what you will enjoy. It’s like an epic novel with 144 chapters. Welcome to Sunnydale. Many arrive and most never leave.

The high school setting, charm and sometimes goofy humor can disguise the essentially grimdark premise of the show. An endless line of(very)young teenage girls are involuntarily called one at a time to fight alone against horrific monsters that hate humanity. They are Called, and they simply fight until they are murdered...and they die alone, in darkness and very, very hard. Then the next girl is Called. There are no old Slayers.

Just an FYI, not sure if anyone else may have mentioned this, but id you can find a 4:3 version of the show to watch, watch that instead. The show was shot in 16:9, but framed and intended for 4:3 (except for 1 S6 episode). Both 16:9 releases of the show are inferior, and full of mistakes. One is just not correctly cropped to 4:3 and ends up including crew in the shots at times. The other is the "remaster" which is absolutely terrible, full of unnecessary croping, over smoothing, and horrid color grading. The original 4:3 TV airings/DVD releases are thr best way to watch the show.

S1.E1 ∙ Welcome to the Hellmouth. Mon, Mar 10, 1997 S1.E2 ∙ The Harvest. Mon, Mar 10, 1997 Season 1 was a mid-season replacement, so during an era where 22 episodes were often the rule, this one was 12 episodes, fit into 11 weeks; the following seasons are all 22 episodes. Please do keep editing these for YT, we have a huge fan base here that will show up for it. 🙂

Ahhh! Airing one episode after the other in a cheeky manner is actually quite funny, so thank you for that context :D And the response for this series has been great, so I'm definitely going to add the show to the rotation. Not sure what the upload schedule will look like exactly, but I definitely plan to keep up with Buffy for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the encouragement! :)

Jeff Korber, the Master's assistant. Too bad he apparently never sang, has the voice to be a superb baritone.

Yes he does! Quite the voice on that man.

This show and Buffy herself mature so much throughout the series. From quite cheese show in season one, becomes serious drama, that touches life sometimes too close.

That sounds like an interesting journey, and I'm here for it! :)

The thing is, either Buffy and/or her mother bought those dresses she hates.

It's too bad your mom didn't understand that the "stupid" title was meant to be ironic - just like we're meant to initially underestimate Buffy because of her name and her looks. Or maybe it's better this way, so you get to experience the show now! And if you're a fan of ASH, you definitely need to stick around! (btw, Giles doesn't have his natural accent either - it's more posh than his real one)
@nebulousreactions11 күн бұрын
Yeah, my mom's odd rules about what I was allowed to watch has afforded me a great amount of content to cover for reactions! :D And as far as his accent, I'm used to him using an American one, so any kind of British is welcome. No offense to my people, but I much prefer the voices from across the pond! :D

Without this show there would be no True Blood,Supernatural,Vampire Diaries and Twilight but it really has never been bettered. Season 1 looks a little dated and cheaply made by the other seasons standards but the show got made as a mid season replacement for another show that got cancelled which is why we only get 12 episodes this seasons but as we go through the seasons with you the production,budget,writing,longterm storytelling and acting just gets better and better and you will look forwrard to reacting to this show.....Welcome to Sunnydale
@nebulousreactions11 күн бұрын
Aww, thank you! And I'm pretty forgiving of a low budget in a first season, as long as the writing is solid and I like the characters, and I'm happy to say this checks all the boxes! :)

Subbing for Buffy. It's a wonderful show. Plenty of drama and suspense to go with the comedy and mild horror. And sometimes you will need tissues.
@nebulousreactions11 күн бұрын
Thanks for subbing! And I've come prepared: I keep tissues at my desk, because I'm a softie who cries at movies if given half an excuse :D

Clubs had a mix of underage and 21 up during that time, especially in college towns. I went all the time before I was 21 (our were 18 and up though).

That explains a lot! :D I've worked at bars, and the idea of teenagers milling around the place is bizarre. I think it's actually state law now here to kick them out 10 pm.

Welcome to the _Buffyverse_ ... my one recommendation is you avoid the so-called "remaster" of the series. It ruined it. But this series will change your life; it's still so brilliant, all of these years later.

The very first scene is supposed to be the mission statement for the series, subvert your expectations.
@nebulousreactions11 күн бұрын
Sounds good to me! I like subversion :) And I can definitely see that at work here. It carries over to even the premise, really. When you think of a monster hunter, a young girl is generally not high on the list of possibilities.

Omg! I can’t believe you’re watching Buffy! S1 is not the greatest but S2 really kicks off and just gets better and better.
@nebulousreactions12 күн бұрын
That meshes with what other commenters have said, because it sounds like they had a pretty low budget to start with. . . which, honestly, I could see sometimes, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment. Glad you're excited for the Buffy journey! :)

2/2. Yes season 1 feels the most 90's but as the seasons go on the show will feel more modern.
@paulflux589211 күн бұрын
Strictly speaking ... Giles does not have the same accent as Anthony Stewart Head. Giles has a very upper-class English accent as requested by Joss Whedon. Head's natural accent is more common North London.
@nebulousreactions11 күн бұрын
You're actually the second person to note that, and it's funny, because I would probably make a similar comment myself. :D But hey, I'll take any across-the-pond accent I can and be happy about it. I'm serious. I even like thick Scottish and Welsh. Can't tell what the feck they're saying most of the time, but it sounds good to me :D But yeah, I'm just used to him having an American accent, so this one'll be a fun change.
@Bri-gq2vx11 күн бұрын
ASH is naturally the more middle/upper class accent, like Giles. The slight mockney thing he does in interviews is an affectation/code switching thing that he developed when he went to a local state school, to fit in. He talked about it in quite an obscure magazine interview once (and as a middle class Brit I can hear that this is 'middle class man talking to a plumber' thing!)

Yeah on just the title. Buffy the vampire slayer. How dumb is that right? However, you watch the first few episodes. Yes, there are monsters, but the biggest monster is being the new kid at a new school. What is more important that staying alive in Sunnydale? Friends.
