The algorithm worked. Never knew you existed before this video. Buffy is my all time favorite show. The first season is ridiculous and complete camp, but worth watching. It picks up in season 2, especially at the halfway mark where things get sooooo good.

Worth noting that a lot of the camp (especially the cut-away shots for fight & action scenes) is due to budget. The studio didn't think the show would be a hit, so they gave Whedon $3 million and an empty warehouse for the full season. For context, legendarily low-budget shows Xena & Hercules, in the same year, were getting $1 million an episode, while top-tier shows like Star Trek were in the $2-3 million range.

The show was ordered to series without a break between these 2 episodes. They did a 30 min proof-of-concept to sell the show and got a 12 episode order out of it. These 2 parts were shot back-to-back and broadcast as a 2-hour-movie.

I've heard that Eric Balfour, who plays Jesse, was deliberately cast because at the time he was a better-known actor than the other young actors in the friends group. So people would assume he would survive. When he dies so quickly, Whedon is sending a signal that all your normal assumptions about how these shows work will not necessarily be what happens. Whedon's initial vision for the show was the classic image of a helpless young blonde girl in a dark alley being attacked by a monster. And he turned that trope inside out.

Welcome to the Hellmouth. SMG was born to play The Slayer. Remember that the first season is a mid-year replacement show filmed on spec by a new showrunner with mostly unknown actors. It was also based on a largely ignored and ultra campy movie from a half decade earlier. So it was filmed on a shoestring budget. It improves steadily throughout S1 and shoves it into overdrive in S2. Despite the humor and the camp, don't forget the show's very dark premise. Buffy is merely the latest in an endless number of teenage girls who are involuntarily called to be Slayers. They fight demons alone until they die. Usually in the dark, painfully hard and completely alone. There are no old Slayers.

OMG welcome to the Hellmouth! You're going to love life in Sunnydale, it's never boring! I HAD to subscribe, Buffy is my favorite show of all time, and I was lucky enough to get to experience it all live on tv. BTW you mentioned that it's not streaming anywhere- I believe it's streaming on Tubi. HOWEVER- if you have access to a dvd player, the dvd sets are relatively inexpensive and have a much better transfer than the streaming version (there are videos on youtube about why the streaming version is kind of a mess, but basically they did terrible color correction- changing the tone of scenes- bad looking upscaling, things like that). If you really come to love the show, it might be worth investing in those. (and, re: your comment about American high schools, they're all different. The one where they film Buffy is a real high school. I went to a school with 2000 kids, and it was several discrete buildings from all different eras, connected by glass and metal walkways).

If you continue to watch, I’d recommend watching the OG version, not the remastered version. It’s considered one of the worst remasterings of all time because they mess with the lighting and framing. Seriously you can see the crew in some shots of the remastered version. Anyways, hope ya like it. First season is very monster of the week heavy. But the characters are great imo. I think this guy is pretty good at not spoiling stuff but there’s another creator, called revenge of the nerd, who has been doing short Buffy recap essay type videos for years. He’s definitely slowed down the past couple years but he has done so many. Every ep has its own video breakdown. Since Buffy is one those shows that has been studied in film classes, it’s interesting seeing details from the episode get broken down. I found the show in my twenties when I had first moved to Chicago. Honestly I liked the settings with the library and the school, as well as the chemistry between the young leads, Buffy, Willow, and Xander.

Nice to stumble across your channel! One thing I will tell you straight off the bat - if you do end up deciding to pay to watch the show, I'd actually avoid the version on streaming services, as the HD remaster (the only one available on streaming) is notorious for losing a lot of the mood/atmosphere of the show by not maintaining the colour correction and aspect ratio of the original. Tons of really bright scenes that should be dark and gritty, visible boom mics etc. If you do continue with the show, I'd recommend torrenting a HQ DVD rip or buying a second hand DVD boxset online. Have fun!

All schools are different, but Sunnydale High School exteriors are shot at Torrance High School. They also shot the original Beverly Hills, 90210 there. Salt is not a thing for vampires here. The female vampire in the opening is Julie Benz later starred on Dexter. Vampires probably don't care that they look like that because they have no reflections and never have to see themselves. Episodes 1 & 2 aired back to back, so you watched them as intended. (Minus the flipping, zooming, etc.) The episodes were filmed back to back. There was an unaired pilot with a different Willow. Do not watch the HD remastered version which is wide-screen. They totally screwed it up.

Anyone worth their salt who wants to watch Buffy MUST watch it in its original format. 4:3 non-HD. The HD edit absolutely DESTROYS the lighting, framing, and tonality of the show. You see the boom mic at times, it's so bad. 2. GET MODERATORS!!! BtVS is rife with spoilers - intense spoilers. You need moderators. 3. Read a Watch Buffy guide. There are various watch guides that can tell you watch order, how to watch, whether to read the titles or watch the titles etc. These guides provide the modern watcher (no pun intended), with the optimum perimeters for viewing. 4. Glad you enjoyed! Buffy is a fantastic show. While the first season is less great than later seasons, even the first year of the show is well-written. It gets better (higher production values) around the middle of season 2. I hope you will buy the DVDs or subscribe to a streaming service because the footage you are watching is pixelated and zoomed in, so you are actually missing out on significant parts of the show, and it's inhibiting your ability to understand what is happening. (It should have been clear that the crowd pushed Jesse into Xander). Happy viewing!

Just for future reference: Every episode of "Buffy" should be on Tubi, a free streaming service. I think it might be the remastered DVD version, which has its own issues, but that solves your "tracking down episodes" issue if it's not on any of the streaming services you subscribe to.

I watched this from the beginning. I was a SMG fan from her soap days which is why I started this (was late teens) and it be ame my fav show ever and my firs5 show I was obs3ssive and bought the books and vhs/dad's and everything buffy related. It remained my fav till supernatural finally knocked it back a spot it 2022. So a long ass time. It defined who I felt I was back then. (Whereas supernatural is more adult me and I connect in a different, no less obsessive way). I will always member that time of my life when I rewatch the show.

Actually, in season 2 they started allowing SMG more control over her outfits. The way she looks improved significantly. Michelle Trachtenberg is in the show, and... in some sense she is even in this episode. I know it sounds like gibberish, but trust me, you'll understand. Eventually. Did you notice that girl, who found a dead body stuffed in her locker? She asked “what kind of name is Buffy?” and immediately after that was greeted as “hey, Afrodisia”. Think about stopping the video when you want to talk - pretty much all dialog is important, in some way or another. Xander was in the library, because earlier Willow told him to check out some books, when he wanted her help with math. Rules for becoming a vampire were laid out explicitly, when Buffy confronted Giles in the library: “they have to suck your blood, and then you have to suck their blood”. The fact that somebody was bitten does NOT imply they'd become a vampire. Originally first two episodes were aired back to back, so the original watchers didn't have to wait. That's not a pilot. That's a first episode. BtVS has an unaired pilot, which basically follows the story of the first two episode, in a very compressed form, and has Willow played by a different actress (who was just standing in, she had no desire to be in the series proper). 20:16 That's Mercedes McNab. Apart from Buffy, she was also in Addams Family (girlscout cookie girl), and in Addams Family Values in a more prominent role. 22:17 Of course he is not blind. He wasn't the one the Master poked in the eye. You'll love Cordelia. Everybody does. 25:54 Who pushed him? Well, you do remember you're watching a cropped version, right? The Master is alive, as Giles pointed out. Darla was burned by holy water, but isn't dead either. The only important vampire who died was Luke (who is emphatically not Angel, and I don't understand how you could mistake one for the other, even with the quality being that low).

The way this series develops over the seven series is incredible with brilliant, characters, storylines and meaningful life metaphors. The show has everything life, love lust, friendship, betrayal, grief, joy and brilliant comedy too, all told in fantastic drama, you will love it. S1 of BTVS is a bit cheesy due to low budget etc but you will see it improving leaps and bounds from S2 onwards. It is an amazing show. Most people who start to watch it become totally engrossed in it and cant wait for each episode. Enjoy your journey.

The vamp faces were based more on The Lost Boys look. But not the way they died, which was very messy in that movie. These vamps just go poof so there's no dead bodies to clean up. Season 1 was shot on 16 mm film and is a bit dark in most episodes. Once it was renewed for a second season, they had more money to improve the picture quality, lighting and the music, which made a huge difference. The music score is actually one of the best things about this show, but it's not here yet in S1. And Michelle Trachtenberg? She might be in this later on, or so I've heard.

Stick with it man! If you manage to get through S1 you will be hooked. The way this show develops is incredible. It really does have some of the greatest TV Drama ever shown. From S2 onwards it improves leaps and bounds with bigger budget, better writing and special effects. You can just see it getting slicker the storylines and reveals are amazing, with great new characters, hilarious comedy, utterly heart breaking moments and brilliant finales to each Season. Again considering this show is now 27 years old it still has amazing appeal. Great to see your positive reactions from only a couple of episodes. You will become engrossed by it, and have such empathy with these brilliant characters. Here we can see Buffy's true power where she defeats Luke and The Master in their plan, and saves the day.

There was a movie before the show came on the air (starring Kristy Swanson as Buffy). It's kinda, sorta canon for the most part. So it was established already that she was the slayer which is why they didn't really do an origin thing in the first episode.

Movie is fun it’s own way and you get a lot of 80s. But it also makes some jokes apparent that are not otherwise and right at the start reveals that it doesn’t matter if the actress stays around slayers can be killed and can come back as totally different people but looking like a clone so makes people take the show and threat more seriously even know that they already know SMG appears the whole set of seasons already. Etc.

Subscribed. Love your relaxed vibe. 😊 One tip I would say going forward, the fanbase for BtvS is quite...passionate. Try not to let others' opinions sway your own. Enjoy the show, get to know the characters and get ready for a bumpy ride. There's another reactor that I'm following at the mo that's just started S6. She points out character flaws but doesn't fixate on them, and is great at understanding why characters act the way they do. You seem the same way.

The whole series supposedly grew out of an idea Joss Whedon had to reverse the horror movie trope of the sexy blond girl going somewhere she shouldn't and being killed by the monster. In this series, the sexy blond girl goes somewhere she shouldn't... and kills the monster. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer film was built around that idea, but Joss was so dissatisfied with it that he withdrew from the project. Then he added "High School is Hell" and made this series. The original episode was aired over two hours; for reruns they broke it into two pieces, which is why the "To Be Continued" message had to be added at the end of the first one.

New sub, here for the Buffy reactions. Welcome to the Whedonverse! Hope you can avoid spoilers and make it through the rough 1st season. If you get to season 2 there's zero chance you won't finish the series and put it in your top 5 all time. Also please feel free to keep using bootlegs, the official version on streaming services is widely regarded as the worst HD conversion in history and has coloring problems, lighting issues, framing problems...it's fine if its all you have but downloading the DVD versions (or buying the whole series on DVD for 30 bucks) will make for a better experience. Maybe one day we'll get a faithful HD conversion!

1. First season is not rough and everybody loved the hell out of it when it first came out. 2. Yeah get the DVDs. Or at least anything NOT the windscreen HD remastered version which is bungled up something horrible.
