The Master didn't make sure Buffy was dead because he was already sure. He was a creature of his time (he's centuries old) and in virtually all that time 'death' meant the heart had stopped. As he himself said "prophecies are tricky things" and he failed to take account that the meaning of death might have changed since the prophecy was made.
@sirmoonslosthismind2 жыл бұрын
the line between "alive" and "dead" has always been fuzzy, and i don't think that's really changed. but certainly, the master failed to realize that buffy might fulfill the prophecy yet still not be beyond saving.

And even Giles said that this particular prophecy was inescapable. Buffy WILL die. So the Master KNEW she would. He didn't need to make sure she died, because he knew she would die and she did. He didn't think about the possibility of bringing her back, regardless of whether he's familar with the concept. I mean Giles knew about CPR, and he never thought or said "Buffy will face the Master and she WILL DIE....... But maybe there's some chance she could be brought back".

@@Logan_Baron I've always wondered how many slayers have died because their watcher doesn't have even basic medical knowledge/training in things like cpr, wound care etc, maybe the reason there hasn't been two slayers at once before buffy is that none of the watcher have medical training. Its like when buffy says she knows why there isn't a prophecy concerning the friends of a slayer, because no slayer before her had friends.

The fact that it was such good acting is why you weren't silly for being emotional. SMG brings it. And ASH... his devastation is easy to read on his face. The reason the bones weren't important for this episode is the same reason that the season only has 12 episodes: It was a mid-season replacement and there was zero guarantee (and probably not likely at all) that there would ever be a S2. But since you have posted S2, E1 reaction, you know that they didn't forget about it. Little is forgotten in BTVS. I sometimes seriously wondered if Joss and Marti Noxon would go back and watch every old episode deliberately looking for callbacks or things that they didn't really deal with the aftermath of, so they could bring it up again. So, so many things you think were a one-off end up coming back seasons later.

The reason Buffy survives the prophecy is because the Slayer isn't supposed to have attachments other than her Watcher. She goes into battle alone and because Giles let's Buffy have friends that resulted in a unknown variable which is Xander being able to breath life back into Buffy when Angel couldn't, cause the prophecy never considered the Slayer having allies

Prophecy Girl definitely the best episode of S1. Many who are new to the show complain about the special effects, but have to bear in mind this is 25yo show, and S1 did not have a massive budget, plus the writers were conscious of the fact they never knew if it would be recommissioned. Here you can really see the direction of the show changing, giving all the characters so far much more purpose. This incredible show just gets better and better, you will love S2. Some comic relief also, this show has the best one liners ever. The Master ' what do ya think, 5.1' and 'By the way I like your dress'. SMG'S acting is superb here. When she says 'I'm 16 years old I don't want to die' you really feel her anguish. Great enthusiastic reactions to S1. From mid season 2 onwards this show goes like a rollercoaster and never stops with some amazing episodes. S3 is just out of this world. Enjoy your journey! We are already sensing this will become you fav show of all time!

The Master was many centuries old - and not exactly current on modern lifesaving techniques. He got his rush of power from drinking Slayer blood, he figured dropping her in the pool would finish her off, which it did - and it was his secret lair, who was going to save the Slayer anyways, they always work alone, right? So he wanted to get out of there as soon as possible and get to the Hellmouth. :)

This show was way ahead of its time? That's the understatement of the decades. The Master, like many villains underestimated his prey, he thought drinking her and "killing her" was done, but he was anxious to get out of his prison, so I think he wasn't doing a thorough job. Your assumption about not having a 2nd season guaranteed was correct. Buffy was a grand experiment for the fledgling WB network at the time and it payed off big time, the show became the jewel of its lineup back in the day and we were all the better for it

Season one also has many seeds for future seasons. Again unlike many other series things which occur in one season may be revisited or comeback to bite one in future seasons. In some cases it might just be references like you remember when...

in a nutshell; The Master needed a Slayer's blood to break free, so once he drained her he could leave. Also the reason Buffy was powerless agaisnt him was because he has hypnotic powers. However after she came back she was immune to the hypnotic power BECAUSE he drained her...kind of a flaw in his plan. that's why on the roof Buffy was able to beat him. the CPR was not accurate no...but i have never seen a CPR performed accuratley on TV.

Always happy if new ppl find this show and get in love with it. It always takes a bit to grow with it, but until mid-season of 2, this shows capture u and don’t let you go away. Season 2, especially 3 is 10/10. season 4 is a bit of let down, but has some of the greatest single episodes, season 5 is a boomer and for many the best season. Continuing with S6, it gets really dark and desperately, until we reach the final season 7, with a Big Bang. Can’t wait for you to react on all of this. Get ready to get your heart cry out in couple of episodes in 2, 4, especially 5 and 6. This series feels more modern at season 3 or 4. it’s well aged at certain points. I understand if ppl feel a bit cringe about it in season 1 and maybe 2, but it gets better and better. Enjoy your journey on this beautiful series and discover one of the best series until today.

i personally think Buffy wore that dress because she very much thought she was going to her death.. she's a teenage girl being told her death is a certainty a day before it 'has to' happen. after trying to avoid and move on, she violently embraces it - on the night of her prom no less - for the good of the entire world. her encounter with willow - seeing her react to even one room overtaken by vampire chaos - is a microcosm of the wider world should buffy, in her view, refuse her fate. wearing the dress, with Angel's leather jacket and necklace - with a crossbow in hand - represents who she is most fully.. powerful, multi-faceted, but ultimately a teenager who before being called as the slayer was a girly, fashion-loving, popular individual.

You're going to love this show. I love season 1, but honestly, it's a mere shadow compared to the rest of the show. Also, I kind of like how they don't explain some things, like why Buffy feels different after dying. So each fan can think about it, come up with their own idea and debate them with other fans. Personally, I think she feels different for 3 separate reasons at the same time (at least, give me time and I could add to it). I'll only say two because the third isn't to be known yet. (Don't worry, it isn't a spoiler, just an idea I came up with after watching more of the show) So, first, she went down to the Master's lair as the proverbial lamb, as the Master claimed. The prophecy told her the outcome of her battle would be her death, so she literally went down there with the purpose to die. After dying and being revived, she was no longer constrained by the prophecy so she stopped being the sacrificial lamb and became the hunter. In kind of the same light, Buffy spent season one trying to avoid being the slayer. She didn't want any part of it but kept getting dragged into situations because she felt responsible to fight for the innocent. Her choosing to sacrifice herself was also a choice to embrace being the slayer. So, when she died, it was a symbolic death of Buffy and a birth of her as the slayer. Having fully accepted her role, she embraced the power it gave her and she felt more powerful. Jo Korea holding back. I know, just a little too exuberant. I know it can sound odd after watching season one to see such a passion for the show. Trust me, get a couple more seasons under your belt and your view of Buffy and friends will change completely for the better. Enjoy it, because the show is never the same after the first time through.

Okay so it doesn’t have the budget of Game of Thrones but come on, this show is all about the characters and there journey through high school and growing up. The Annoying one being a metaphor for staying a child forever and never growing up or becoming an adult and choosing to save her friends and sacrifice herself (in a beautiful dress by the way) As someone who watched the show growing up I was hooked after this episode and was never disappointed.
@ronaldfasshauer43902 жыл бұрын
Or maybe is less then a metaphor but the realisation that nobody cares that a child was killed. We don't the name of that kid, who his parents are etc his life before turning has no value for us the viewer only what he does after turning is of interest to us.

Re: dress, there're a couple of things going on IMO. On one level, it's just a nod to the original movie. To me there's another layer though in that, wearing that dress, Buffy looks like the typical helpless victim from every traditional vampire story and _initially_ that's the role she plays (she's bought into what everyone is telling her, the prophecy being the literal in-universe representation of that tradition, telling her "this is just the way it is, for all your strength you're ultimately a victim, you die"). Then, as tradition dictates, The Master kills his nubile, young victim and that _should_ be the end of Buffy's tale. But this ain't that kind of story :). Once revived, Buffy's stronger having transcended the victim role that was prescribed for her. So another way to see it is the show doing what it does _a lot_ - setting up a traditional (often sexist) trope and then subverting/rejecting it (BtVS _looks_ like a fun, at times slightly cheesy romp - and it is :) - but there's also a reason numerous essays, PhD theses etc. have been written about it. There's meat on those bones, even the comparatively cheesier bones of season 1).

The dress and jacket is an homage to the movie. I think the showdown probably wouldn’t have happened at the dance because that would have been too much like the movie. The movie isn’t part of the series continuity. But the original screenplay written by Whedon is. So there’s some overlap I guess. I think I’ve heard that there’s a comic book based on the screenplay if you want a proper prequel. There’s also an unaired pilot. It has a lot of elements of the first two episodes but was shorter. It also had a couple different actors, like a different Willow. It’s on KZbin, I think.

You said Buffy looked different post 'death', but that's because at least some of the episode was shot much earlier in the season so Wheadon had a finale in case it was cancelled prematurely. Gellar looks and talks at times as she did in the first few episodes, before she settled into the part and David Boreanaz also has that early look. It is a slightly disappointing ending and the fight is hardly epic but, as you said, there was no guarantee that a second season would be commissioned, or perhaps it might have had to hop channels. It's mostly intended as a tidy ending.
