Oh I love this episode, it is the Literal definition of the teen mind when focused only on revenge. And the fact that it backfired so horribly on him was fantastic. Same with Cordelia the Literal definition of teen peer pressure and her overcoming it also felt great. Granted, I wouldn't take a guy back that I thought tried a love spell on me, she never seemed to realize the purpose but yikes. But I also wouldn't coldly dump someone in Valentine's day because my friends didn't like him. Gotta say no one came off smelling like a rose in this but the humor and the fact that they are young and by extension prone to stupidity makes it worth it.

Amy messed up the spell, Diana is the goddess of the hunt, not of love. This episode is such an enjoyable romp. I also have big reservations about Xander's actions and Cordelia's reaction to the spell being for her, but the episode itself - it's turn, after turn, after turn, it just doesn't slow down. Loving your reactions.

The ep that made me a fan and still my favourite all these years later. Cordite is actually a chemical you use in munitions.

"Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" is a song from the musical "Pal Joey".

So there is a Scyfy channel Eureka episode that has a similar theme only it's environmental because science town vs mystical. Season 2 episode 11. I highly recommend it. Plus if nothing else it'll get you to fall in love with the show.

this is the beginning of a recurring theme on _buffy_ -- that magic tends to backfire when it's based on faulty assumptions. in this case, xander couldn't make cordelia love him because she already did. xander's character is really problematic, and the ladies are a little too forgiving, but this lesson about magic is going to recur because no one seems to learn from it.

Xander's spell didn't work on Cordelia though so it's easier to see why she would forgive him as it didn't affect her . She still had feelings for him hence the locket in her locker and it's conceivable that she might be flattered that he went to those lengths for her , this is Cordelia after all . Now for the nitty gritty !!

It always makes me flash back to Jesse and episode 2 where he says shut up and she says "okay" and answers with him. And given that, at the time she was a bully, it kind of makes sense. I've noticed that a lot of people I've known that have tend to be abusive to people who are nice, also tend to let other people be abusive towards them and really fall for those relationships. I'm not sure if it's because there's a similarity in personality that they like or that they don't like being in control all the time in spite of always trying to or if it's just a form of self-punishment they don't realize they're doing. Although at least in this case there's a mutual abuse going on. I've seen former abusers take some real horrible crap from people in later relationships.

Xander's collar was a fashion choice In the 90's for a while we went back to zoot suits because of the "Rockabilly and Swing Dancing made a comeback that lasted from 96-98. Remember the guy from the "Stray Cats" in the 80's had a comeback with that style and the song Jump, Jive and something(?) And the cult classic movie "Swing Kids", with the best friend of the main character on "House". *Which fits this because I believe the movie was about Nazi Youth just wishing to dance like in the movie "Footloose" but during that period.* I could be wrong, I am older and that was the birth of the "Jaegerbomb" shot

Yeah, swing music and clothing styles were very popular at the time. The song you're thinking of is Jump, Jive and Wail, it was a cover of a Louis Prima song from the 50's. There was also a song called "Zoot Suit Riot", but I don't remember which group sang it. My favorite 90s era swing was a band called (and I had completely forgotten about this) Squirrel Nut Zippers! Even if the suit Zander is wearing is 70s instead of Zoot Suit inspired, that would work too, because 70s vintage was also quite in.

This is a really solid standalone episode that I just don't care about much because I don't like Xander a whole lot.

The "Boys will be Boys" episode. The episode that shows, where we grade Xander on a curve The one that gives extra credit for not raping women. People can say what they wish about this episode but it would seem paying attention to it and discussing it, might have enabled Joss Whedon to not go on to make his own real life "Xander" moment(s). One of the greatest "flawed" premises episodes in television history, horrible idea, brilliant execution.

Xander gets a bad rap unlike the women on the show that murder people.
