Hush is my favorite episode of all and something blue is just comedy gold. Also fun fact joss wrote hush because critics were saying the show’s success was just because of the dialogue and he wanted to prove the wrong.
@CatharticCreation4 ай бұрын
i mean dialogue is a good reason to love a show, isn’t it? weird insult from critics. that’s like saying the only reason a show is popular is because of the plot. dialogue is so integral to storytelling.
@JimmyPageTV6 сағат бұрын
Annoyingly that makes sense from a critic standpoint. In film school, they teach us first and foremost that good storytelling and good dialogue writing are not the same thing. There are quite a few other ways (as shown in this episode which everyone loves) to tell a story WITHOUT dialogue. Dozens of ways in fact, which I guess they thought Joss forgot (?). Shows 'em right haha. This episode is legendary.

The Gentlemen are also an interesting metaphor for some of the worst villains of real life, usually old rich white men. Well-dressed and smiling, they float by untouchably and then delicately cut your heart out (white collar crime, many kinds of exploitation, racism, harassment, r*pe), while their minions do their grunt work. The Gentlemen thrive when the whole society is silent, and the only way to defeat them is to find your voice.
@emmaebaldwin3 ай бұрын
Fun fact: Camden Toy and Doug Jones, the lead Gentlemen, scared Joss so much with their smiles that they’re the only ones who don’t have a fake smile on their monster faces out of the group of Gentlemen. Camden passed away last year, sadly. He played multiple monster roles throughout Buffy and one on Angel. His characters brought so much life to the show! One of my favorite people in the whole world. ❤️🩹

The acting in this episode is amazing (everyone is on their A-game) and I love the scene in the classroom with Giles and the overhead and all his very gory hand-drawn pictures! And all the innuendos with Buffy using the stake to show what she really meant. 😂 Xander, Anya and Spike scene is also hilarious to watch! 👉👌👀 TARA!!! 😍😍😍 The Gentlemen are some of the most horrific monsters in BtVS in my opinion. "Can't even shout, can't even cry / The gentlemen are coming by / Looking in windows, knocking on doors / They need to take seven and they might take yours / Can't call to mom, Can't say a word / You're gonna die a-screaming but you won't be heard." From a web post on 5 of the scariest fairytale creatures ever put on film: "The Gentlemen (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) Okay, this one isn’t a movie, but the Gentlemen are some of the scariest fairy tale creatures ever put on film. While they are not “real” fairy tale creatures (they were inspired by a nightmare creator Joss Whedon had as a child in which a floating monster approached his bed), they were described as fairy tale creatures in the Season 4 episode “Hush.” Their modus operandi is that they come to a town and steal everyone’s voices, only to steal the hearts of seven unlucky individuals. About 2/3 of the episode had no dialogue, earning the episode an Emmy nomination, and a spot as one of the spookiest of television ever."

You captured the feeling we had when we first watched these two episodes. In American life, the change from High School is a major change point that is difficult for most all. This Season and your entertaining takes capture the spirit and change . These 2 episodes are classic BTVS but try to look past the great humor and unique moments. So much is happening with each person with their transition from kid the young adult. Also, take a moment and realize the great writing and production that allowed 3 great leads, Angel, Oz, and Cordelia, to leave the show, have new characters replacing them, and all before the halfway point with ease. What a fantastic way that Anya was added slowly the previous year. The audience is spoiled by the great characters and writing that we take for granted how effortlessly this show can change, subtract, add, and adapt while improving without changing the points Buffy wants to address.

The cast recalled it was actually exhausting to film with the effort that had to be put in talk but stay silent. The nightmare of being cut into and not being able to scream shown when the student is being held down while The Gentlemen extract his heart, really frightening. Even though S4 wasn't one of my favourites overall, it did contain some brilliant stand out episodes of which Something Blue was one. The comedy here is achingly funny, and this episode contains so much foreshadowing for later episodes, you can see in S4 Willow becoming more reliant of magic each time she has a crisis, and that the potential Spuffy relationship is hinted at, but in a comedic way. Hilariously funny when Giles and Buffy use the words impotent and flaccid referring to Spike in the bath. Interesting too that Spike is so much more perceptive of Willow's pain over Oz. Overall a great episode to look back on.

You just watched one of the episodes that, with regard to what was possible with an hour of TV, expanded everyone's perception. It was wonderfully experimental...taking voices away, leaving only the actor's expressions and body language. And the cast came through with their A game. There are a handful of episodes from BtVS that were among the best episodes...and this is one of them...but THIS one was legendary TV, universally admired for changing the game and doing something genuinely different. Even while doing something almost revolutionary...every minute still felt precisely like BtVS episode, losing none of its action/humor/horror/drama combo punch.

"Hush" remains one of the best thriller television episodes I've seen. It is such a love letter to old school horror, I can't help but enjoy it to the hilt. Very well made, scored, paced ... and the makeup and effects were choice. My only gripe is that the script does not once call for any characters in the story to whisper. If one can breathe, whispers are possible. But I am being picky there, admittedly. My partner and I occasionally (only at home) briefly pretend we are both "Gentlemen" and do those oh-so-poilte and smooth gestures and those dreadfully fiendish smiles at each other for a moment. Then we burst into giggles. It's fun to have inside jokes together, even after you've been a couple for a long time.

“Cars and Buffy are... unmixy things”. Well, we've seen Buffy driving, in the “Band Candy” episode. She did get where she wanted. Mostly. “Imagine walking in on this”. Well, I've never been to American college, but if what I've heard is true, it's not the freakiest thing that happens there. Riley is keeping a major secret, but it's not like there isn't a major secret kept from him too. It's pretty symmetric.
