I really like the bit in this episode where she turns up at the vineyard. Just shortly before she was saying how she doesn't want to be the one, just like way back in season 1, especially when she had to go face the Master but she was 16 and didn't want to die, but that didn't matter cause the watchers council, shadow men etc were all fighting a war. Now in this season everyone's all like 'wars, armies, generals, etc' and Buffy's forced into the position of being the one to send some 16 year old girls to their deaths. It's like she just decides 'no, forget all that, I'll do it myself'. Accepts the responsibility, faces it head on, excels at it, and all for the good of others. Common Buffy W

So, to emphasize a note from the last episode's comment (yes I did put a spoiler - many, in fact) Buffy listens to a soulful Spike admit something a soulless Spike always said, but could never mean and drew stregnth from it and went to the vineyard and got what The Scoobies either didn't want to go back for and/or didn't believe was there, where as The Scoobies kicked Buffy out because they had issue with falling into a trap - despite Buffy's warnings of this being a war not everyone would survive and the vineayeard itself being a potential trap (not listening to Buffy seemed to be why Xander lost his eye and a big reason they kicked Buffy out) - slept around (Faith with Wood, Willow with Kennedy, and Xander with Anya) thinking they had this wonderful plan, which was the most obvious trap the show ever laid out (a Bringer told them exactly where to go and find some weapons). With that said... who is the group going to kick out now (once the smoke clears and we see who's alive), for walking into this trap thinking it wasn't a trap (when Buffy, at least, gave warning the vineyard where Xander lost an eye [not to mention saying slaying in general was "deeply dangerous" from episode two onward] could be)? Faith, Xander, Willow, Giles, Andrew, Dawn an SIT? Not doing so makes them hypocrites, but doing so continues the problems The First is taking advantage of.

@@xrey83 SPOILERS FOR THE NEXT EPISODE AND THE LAST EPISODE And as with your last two comments on the subject, you have a right to them, but I disagree. I understand plot armor, but thinking about it at any time (while watching or not) only takes me out of the show. All characters: main, recurring, and guest have it at some point. Example: Joss has stated he wanted the core four to survive the series finale, so they did. A lot more characters than did should have died in the bomb blast and the series finale. Calling it out and worrying about it doesn't allow any pop culture to work well. So it shouldn't be worried about. I have and will always trust Buffy's slayer intuition over Xander, Willow Giles or any other Scooby that has been in the group. Touched was another great episode building up to Chosen and the end of the show. The total breakdown and chaos among the group just bickering and talking over each other and arguing constantly about what to do. When Faith tells Kennedy to shut up, it is highly satisfying. Spike has one of his greatest moments in the show when he finds Buffy after she was banished her from the house. His speech to Buffy is pure and heartfelt, and when Buffy asks him to stay and hold her it is one of the most romantic, intimate scenes in the whole show. In contrast to everyone else who seems to just having sex for instant physical gratification, the Spike/Buffy scene is so much more meaningful as opposed to these. However, an interesting exchange between Faith and Wood before they 'get it on', but the Spike/Buffy scene is so much more emotional. The incredible scene at the end when Buffy finds Mʔ stuck in the rock, it sets up the next episode nicely. Caleb, now knows if she gets her hands on it she will get her revenge on him. A great episode approaching the end of the show, but feel it will be remembered for the Spike/Buffy scene in the house bedroom, where is the writing like this today, this is why so many people keep coming back to shows like BTVS and Angel as the writing and storytelling are so brilliant, and when younger people come across the Buffyverse shows they become totally engrossed in them.

First on-screen lesbian sex scene on primetime TV is Willow and Kennedy. According to Gay Times: “Willow’s sex scene with the divisive potential slayer Kennedy in season seven was the first lesbian sex scene on primetime television.” I’m not the biggest fan of Kennedy and I will always wish this first was Willow and Tara instead but representation is representation. To be honest, despite that, I actually quite like it. The scene is touching (pun intended - the episode is called ‘Touched’) and consensual when many other on-screen/off-screen sex scenes in ‘BtVS’ are not - including the suggestive sex between Willow and Tara in the musical episode ‘Once More, With Feeling’. So it makes a huge difference to my opinion towards it. It’s very sensual and it serves somewhat of a clever parallel in that Willow confesses in an earlier scene to Kennedy that she’s scared to have sex with her because she believes she’ll turn into “Big Bad Willow”, as Kennedy put it, again. Referring to the Season 6 3-part finale when Willow turned into Dark Willow. The turning-evil-after-sex narrative is very familiar territory as they did the same thing with Angel in Season 2’s ‘Innocence’ when Angel became his evil alter-ego Angelus after his first intimate night spent with Buffy. I just thought it was a clever call back to that whole situation. But Kennedy reassured Willow that that wouldn’t happen and she was right about it. The fact Kennedy only went ahead with the love-making after getting full information about Willow’s concerns and full consent from her completely redeemed her as a character in my eyes. Up until this point I could not stand her character. Between her constantly harassing Willow to coerce her to “hang out” with her because she had a crush on her and bullying other potential slayers - she was not a very likeable character for me. She was pushy and arrogant and brash, so I just found it very difficult to like her. I know the whole point was for Willow to have a love interest that was more assertive than Oz or Tara but there’s a fine line between assertiveness and aggressiveness. And she was well on her way to crossing it. I’m glad that she reigned all that in when she got her way and Willow finally caved in to her. This sex scene and the conversation they had before it showed me that she could be a decent person. It’s a pity you don’t get to see Kennedy develop more because it was the final season but it is what it is.

The whole situation is not normal. There is supposed to be ‘one slayer to rule them all’ and no one was allowed to know. The slayer was given instinct and dreams to assist her in decision making. The decisions were hers and hers alone. She has guided them through years and years of evil and apocalyptic moments and now they all decide to kick her out of her own house? Buffy is the slayer and if they don’t agree, they can stay home and shake in their ‘stylish, yet affordable boots’! I love that Spike could access the situation and see it for what it was. You can tell Willow felt guilty, because otherwise she wouldn’t have intimated Buffy left of her own free will, instead of getting kicked out.

It has taken me MANY times watching this series since it premiered, and then I got the DVDs, then the Blu Rays, then the comic books that ensued. But the bottom line is that Buffy is ALWAYS the hero. Spike actually "almost" completes his arc from the worst sort of villain back to a hero himself in this episode. "Almost" because there are two more episodes. Enjoy them! Spike's reference to the diabolical device of "the comfy chair" is a classic allusion to Monty Python, but I'm old enough to have watched that when it first aired in the US on PBS and UHF stations.

Maybe Buffy would have been more open to input and suggestions if the people she should be able to trust weren't so busy stabbing her in the back. Giles of all people betraying her like that in "Lies my Parents Told Me"? They didn't leave her with any real room for cooperation and discussion. And even so, as soon as she said _what_ they were going to do everyone dogpiled on her never even giving a chance to work out a plan to do it. Spike is probably the best person in the show at reading people and Willow thought she could sell that story to him? In that "there are always casualties in war" bit, Buffy is struggling with a harsh reality that if you fight a war, people die. But often if you _don't_ fight the war than more people die. In this one, if they don't fight it, then the first wins, the army of Turok Han pour out of the Hellmouth, and everyone dies. It sucks, but that's reality both in the real world and in the world of the Buffyverse. And, oh, look, Buffy was right, from beginning to end. The real power was at the vineyard and Faith led the others right into the trap that Buffy warned them about, not at the seal, perhaps, but the First got them right into it.
@ShieldVids9 ай бұрын
Buffy was wrong. Faith started acting like buffy in this episode and that lead to what happened. The slayer attitude is what is the problem. The fact that buffy got what was at the vineyard by herself means she didn't have to risk the girls lives at all for her theory and could have gone by herself the whole time. Buffy has super strength the potentials do not.
@coldservings9 ай бұрын
@ShieldVids ah, yes, the old "judge the validity of initial decisions based on information that came later." Buffy was forced by desperation to go by herself. She didn't beat Caleb. She couldn't. The way the fight worked out, she got past him and was able to get to the scythe (I don't think using its name counts as a spoiler). It could all too easily have gone the other way, especially since she had no backup on what was basically a Hail Mary play. In short, she got lucky. As for Faith, she was acting the way she had to as the leader going into a fight. The group was in the process of falling apart to squabbling when Faith gave her "I'm your leader and you do as I say." There is a reason that military forces are organized that way. It's not because officers are big beanies who enjoy giving orders. It's because long history shows that forces organized that way tend to win over those who don't. "Unity of command" is one of the key principles of warfare. Had Faith not taken actual command, would they have gone into the trap? Well, no. But they would have been neutralized just as effectively, still arguing about how to make the decisions. And there they would have stayed until the Turok Han came pouring out of the hellmouth. The fact remains that key power was at the vineyard, exactly as Buffy said, and the First was setting a trap elsewhere, exactly as Buffy warned.

Slowly but surely the toxicity put itself to bed. Did it require Spike to regain his soul? It’s debatable. One has to first define what a “soul” even is. Because there’s many demons that do just fine without one. I just wonder. Do Spuffy or Spike fans think Spike would have said this even if he was soulless? I think he might have said something similar but the focus wouldn’t so much be on Buffy’s influence on him for just being who she is but more so on how she effects him for how he makes her feel. It wouldn’t be that different though because he wasn’t that different soulless as he is ensouled. I think he eventually would have learned to be like he is with a soul. Given the time and patience and understanding I do think so. But it’s an interesting question to ask because I assume there’s many takes on it as there is people who watch the show and pay attention to Spike most.

And then there’s Buffy and Spike in an abandoned apartment; which is where they were at the first time they had sex; just resting together. Especially not the latter half of it when the Potentials come into it. But because I don’t, the scenes and sequences and moments I do like somehow seem just that little bit more special than they would be if I did like Season 7. An acting mentor told me that you can have collaboration on your project, but when it comes down to producing and putting it all on it's feet, SOMEONE has to lead. There has to be a stronger voice. Leaders are all about "I'm the boss. This is what is going to happen." With out that, there is chaos. Buffy, before they tossed her out like the maniacs they are, said, "Hey...if anyone would like to talk, let's do it." (Which is what Faith ended up trying to do as well. Problem is, "Let's talk, everyone has a say," turns into nothing and chaos, as seen here.) NO ONE ELSE had a real, workable plan, besides sitting around waiting to be killed. Yet, at the same time, they were all about, "I'm gonna follow Buffy." The second there are real consequences, the second she stepped up and said, "Hey... we're doing this..." they tossed her out. Did she need to be warmer about it, maybe... but sometimes warm doesn't instill action.

Writing and character development in Buffy is generally pretty good. It probably makes it harder to get away with uncharacteristic choices.
