The Willow Xander thing is not supposed to be something we like. It’s supposed to be something that could’ve happened between two teenagers. This show is all about the pains of growing from childhood into young adulthood and mistakes we can make in our youth. I disagree that it’s not in Willow’s character as she always had feelings for Xander. I don’t like it, but I don’t think it isn’t believable.

Willow and Xander are pathetically and tragically insecure, socially awkward, nerdy teenagers with raging hormones. Hasn't the show been clear about that? Dating Oz, dating Cordelia, gives Willow and Xander more confidence than they can handle. I would say these two are acting very much in character.

I think they’re both accountable and to blame in this situation. And I also think it’s very in character…in the beginning she was only wanting to hook up with Oz and use him to make Xander jealous so she’s always had a “not so innocent” side to her personality.

It can be hard to remember that these characters are just teenagers, especially because the actors are up to 10 years older. Even precociously intelligent teenagers do really dumb things because of hormones.

Ughhhhhh. Willow/Xander. Quite possibly my least favorite ship in the entire show, mostly for the timing. Like...I understand that it's been a long time coming and that they both had pent up emotions, especially Willow. But fuuuuuuuuuck. Oz and Cordelia deserve better from both of them, not only as partners but as friends

I thought this was a good, but not one of the best episodes of S3. We have two competitions running side by side Slayerfest 98 and The Homecoming Queen as well with Buffy and Cordelia becoming obsessed by it. We see some interesting reveals with Willow and Xander begin to have actual real feelings for each other now, when he sees Willow in her dress and dance slowly, and kiss. Cordelia facing down the Cowboy Vampire is a great scene, and the Mayor ( one the the most entertaining characters in the show ) and Trick now working together as well, we just know there is gonna be trouble with these two. Get ready for E6 it's a fan favourite and hilarious banger!

Yeah, the Xander/Willow thing is annoying, especially considering Oz and Cordelia. But to be fair, teens tend to be stupid, with hormones running all crazy and stuff. But I agree that it's not what we would expect from Willow.

I think if Buffy wished to be upset with Cordelia, she had a little bit of a right. Cordelia didn't deliver her message to Buffy she said she would because of getting distracted by someone in the hall. It's interesting that Buffy gets dumped just as Angel arrives back in her life. While I understand Scott's perspective of how Angel affects Buffy's emotional state (even if he doesn't know by who or what), it is still a douche-bag thing for him to dump her just before Homecoming and then show up to the dance with someone else. I think Buffy ran for the crown because Cordelia was, in part, responsible for Buffy not getting her school picture. She looked at the crown as a last chance to get recognized for being a normal kid instead of just for slaying (it wasn't her last chance, but in her being upset Buffy viewed it that way). It wasn't about screwing Cordelia over or wanting fame/popularity. Xander and Willow may be giving in to their hormones, but cheating is still cheating no matter how it's looked at. Xander and Willow should of been more worried about their own mistakes rather than ignoring it by attempting to fix Buffy and Cordelia's problems. I would much rather have seen Faith and Buffy handle Slayerfest98 together than Cordelia and Buffy. That being said, I like the idea of Buffy and Cordelia mending bridges during Slayerfest 98 after fighting about running for Homecoming Queen, but I dislike that Willow and Xander set it up to ignore their cheating guilt. Faith ends up without her stag date (Buffy) because of this, while Xander and Willow don't speak to Faith at a dance of a school she doesn't even go to. I think the immediacy of Faith calling Scott a name before pretending to have an STD in front of his date was because she felt alone after trying to communicate with Xander and Willow, who ignored her. Her loyalty to Buffy would have had her doing so anyway, but it wasn't a coincidence that it was done just after Xander and Willow ignored her. Cordelia has never really deserved Xander. Even in _Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered_ when she dumped him for her friends opinion, she was struggling with the change in school hierarchy and what that meant (going so far as showing how much she liked him even after the breakup) while Xander intended revenge by dumping her during a love spell. So when it comes to Xander, it is hard to feel sympathy, while with Willow, her feelings for Xander don't make the cheating excusable. So, now I'm positive Willow doesn't deserve Oz, either. I love the fact that neither Buffy or Cordelia get the crown. I've always wondered if it was because the school voters saw the outcome of their issues playing out in the school.

Prom/homecoming confuses me, in shows sometimes it seems to be at the end of the year and sometimes it's not, as a Canadian I am wildly unclear on the rules of these things.

Homecoming is a thing that happens in the autumn, usually tied to a football game. I switched high schools so I had two different experiences- in one school, there was a big game and then a dance. At my other (bigger) school, it was a much bigger thing- there was an afternoon parade, a night football game with a special halftime show with a homecoming queen and her court (they all rode in convertibles in the parade, other organizations in my high school also made themed floats- Spanish honor society, SADD- Students Against Drunk Driving, everything), and the game- it was the last home game of the season, and alumni are supposed to go to it- the "homecoming" part- was always some big deal game against my school's rival. Prom is a springtime thing, usually closer to the end of the school year. It's literally just the dance. As a band nerd, homecoming was always much more fun. I couldn't have cared less about prom. I didn't even go to my senior prom after some drama with my junior one.

Ya, Xander × Willow is one of the worst plot lines of the whole series. If they had done it earlier, or later, or SOME other way, it could have worked. But they didn't, and it doesn't.

Homecoming is a very forgettable episode. In fact, idk why people rate season 3 so highly. It's good, but not outstanding. Like half and half great episodes and duds.

I agree, this is one of my least favorite episodes in the show, along with another that comes up later. The season 3 episodes that are great are like Buffy at it's all-time best, and the ones that aren't so great are easily skippable and not really even worth watching (unlike the s4 one that everyone except me seems to hate- at least there are some fun silly moments in that one).
