Remember, they didn't say that it would happen if he had sex. They said if he had a moment of perfect happiness. And you'll notice, during the episode, nothing happened during the sex, but in the afterglow while he was holding her and watching her sleep. *That* was the perfect happiness, not the nookie.

The way we all jumped on this video as soon as we saw it lol. This episode is so good from start to finish. Emotionally charged, so much happening, and some awesome one-liners. Oh, and by the way, the rule is when Buffy cries, we all cry.

This was the highest rated episode of the entire series. Angelus is a great villain and DB does a great job. Buffy with the rocket launcher is one of the most iconic visuals of the show.

I guess they called it "humanity" in TVD, but here it's the human soul, which was put back in Angel by the curse and now taken away because of having perfect happiness. Which may or may not have to do with having sex. It's not just them doing it, but rather his happiness from it. Because he's never had a true love like Buffy before. The soul was taken because it was given to him to make him suffer with remorse, not to live like a human. And as the uncle said, if he forgets that, the soul is removed.

Yes the “switch” is a completely different concept. Implying to a degree their actions can be somewhat of a choice. In TVD if a vampire considers turning off their humanity switch they KNOW they’ll do deplorable things. But in this universe vampires can’t experience empathy, guilt, remorse or love. They are incapable bc of their lack of a soul. Essentially it can’t helped.

Say bro, I dig the way you approach your reactions, super different how u take in the big moments. As a Buffy reaction connoisseur I've not seen that, and the extra behind the scenes trivia is a dope additive, I'm here for it.

The show aired on Mondays through Surprise. From Innocence on, the show aired on Tuesdays. And this back-to-back episodes things was a heavily-promoted sweeps-week thing at the time.

The WB was only on 4 nights a week with new programming. In the fall of 1997 they wanted to start programming on Tuesdays in early January 1998.They had 1 mega hit, Buffy, and decided to move it to Tuesday. Joss Whedon was concerned that moving Buffy from Monday to Tuesday would hurt its ratings and lose some of its audience. He changed some episodes order and came up with the idea of the 2 night shows with a cliffhanger to have the audience watch. Do on early 1998( after much advertising) Surprise was the last Monday night and then Innocence aired on Tuesday. Buffy stayed on Tuesday for the rest of its run. The move was a hit. Another reason the network wanted the move was it had a new show they wanted to have a big audience watching and staying around. The show that followed was Dawson Creek. That changed the concept of Young Adult dramas and was also a sensation. Tuesday became the night for 14-29 year olds to watch The WB. Then we were shown promos for what new shows were coming.( We saw so many promos for Charmed and then Gilmore Girls that every girl on America was hooked before they aired). It was a brilliant move. Everyone had no idea what was going on when viewing Surprise ended. We all had to watch the next night and our Buffy night changed forever. You cannot comprehend how confused we were after Innocence. Angel was a heartthrob and every girl I watched with thought he was gorgeous and he was a hunk. Imagine any show taking their leading man, an emerging teen idol, and making him an evil killer overnight. Think of when you were in High School and whoever was the guy the girls loved was overnight made a vile villain. Think about the next day scene with Buffy and Angels brutal demeaning insults. That was a deep fear of every girl I knew and it hurt them more than Angel killing the girl in the 🎉alley. In one episode we went from initial concern ( what’s wrong with Angel) to kick his butt Buffy at the end. It is remarkable storytelling and truly bold.

this season was the king of misdirects. First you think that the master may be coming back, then that the anointed one will be the big bad, then spike and dru, then the judge, but NO.. it's going to be Angelus after all.

I'm genuinely curious... How much of this show is a writer allowed to rip off before getting into severe pegal territory? Cause Julie Plec took so damn much from it.

Now you know we always kept saying that form Mid S2 onwards this show really takes off. This episode Innocence along with preceding episode Surprise are where the show changed. I think this is the best episode by far up until this point. There are so many reveals and jaw dropping scenes coming up, but this episode Innocence definitely a Top 20 from the whole series of 144 episodes. Here we now know that Angel has changed into Angelus, where the Gypsy curse has come to pass. Buffy realising that Miss Calendar was behind it was a great scene where she grabs her by the throat in the classroom. There are so many brilliant scenes it this it is hard to pinpoint any. The pain Buffy feels when Angel is talking about her losing her virginity and sexual performance is just so hard to watch. 'Innocence' of course also refers to Willow who is devastated to see Xander kiss Cordelia, and you can also see the 'Innocence' of her budding relationship with Oz. The rocket launcher scene in the mall is epic. Strap in for the ride there is even better to come! BTW the actor who plays Jenny's uncle is the late Vincent Schiavelli who was in lots of famous films from 70s onwards including the Bond Film Tomorrow Never Dies, and yes he was in the cult Humbug episode of the X-Files also.
