The GTR was originally market as a super-performance car for anyone, anytime anywhere. While it was true when it debut at well under $100k, the price quickly climbed. The RS3 is the successor to that ethos. Anyone can get in these cars and point to point, it's nearly untouchable by most cars. And like the GTR the moddability and durability is stunning. Such an amazing platform.

One of the best kept "secrets" is the R / S3 / RS3 series in terms of easy power and fun. The EA888 4 cylinder in the R / S3 is just a beast waiting to be unleashed! A simple tune and some bolt-on parts will put you in the 3.5s 0-60 and low 11 second quarter mile range (possibly even the 10s), and it'll be a nice purring daily driver all day every day that can get good gas mileage. The RS3 just ups that ability to crazy town levels with the same little amount of effort. If you're willing to dig into suspension and wheels, you can greatly improve the handling as well (which as you say isn't that bad to begin with).

I think the entire A3/s3/rs3 and its 4 series counterpart are some of the best bang for your buck vehicles out there if you want a sporty vehicle that you can daily drive AND have a lot of fun in, all whilst maintaining practicality, (usually) reliability, safety, and a fantastic handling car no matter the season. Theyve also become VERY easy to tune/modify over the years with there being multiple great tuner companies that have tunes and performance packages at the ready for these cars at pretty decent pricing, I mean if you already have an a3 or a4 and regret not buying an s or RS model? No problem, you can make that base model perform very similarly to the S/RS model pretty damn easily with a tune and some parts. A modded rs3/rs4 is certainly absolutely no joke from a dig, its absolutely incredible how well they hook and accelerate, its like a damn rocket from a standstill which is a big part of what makes them so fun(and competitive with much more expensive cars). Plus they look amazing, and subtle instead of looking like a flashy, in your face "this car is really fast/expensive" look that other luxury performance vehicles tend to have which im a fan of. Chris' car is basically my dream DD(maybe with a little less HP..would probably get in a bit of trouble with 700whp in an rs3), currently DDing a slightly modded 2019 A4 and the car is still a ton of fun, and I love how well the car handles and how confident im able to feel in the cars ability so I can only imagine how much fun a 700whp RS3 would be.

Sweet video! More stuff like this please! On the topic of modified Audis and unusual engine notes, you might also want to try a modified (stage 2 or 2+) B8/B8.5 Audi S4. They may not be capable of as much power (around 500-550hp seems to be the ceiling) but they have a supercharged V6, and that supercharger SCREAMS with an intake, tune, and pulley (especially the first two). They also have longitudinal architectures with a rear-biased power split meaning they can be pushed even harder through bends. They essentially turn into mini hellcats with AWD and cost considerably less than these RS3's, like half as much.

So I've had an RS3 for over four years now. It still amazes me daily. But define the term "safe". ? If the internals are stock, and it's really putting down 700whp daily, that's around 550 torque at 7500rpm (800crank hp), the crank can do it, no problem. But that's a little much for the stock rods and pins ....it will fail, sooner than later. IROZ knows this. Engine builds are a lot cheaper when you don't need to find a new block, and replace other engine bay components when it windows itself. Not to mention the DSG clutch pack is getting fried on every launch. On a lighter note, every toddler should get to experience a 10 second 1/4 mile!
@ColinRobinson6662 жыл бұрын
@@bruceeverett5372 I mean probably safe enough to daily and do the occasional pull, but yeah you definitely wouldn't want to be launching it all the time, aftermarket internals are always best for the reasons you said. Zach, I may be wrong, but the vw Audi O7k(rs3 engine) architecture is based on the old group B/IMSA 20 valve 5 cylinder. The 07k was first designed and used in the 90s in Europe only for the Euro van. Then in the late 90s the 07k architecture was used in Lamborghini development and in the 2000s vw choked the shit out of this engine (in fear of GTI market competition) and placed it in every vw model as a workhorse motor.

Although it's likely the least interesting of the bunch, people always forget about the Atlas 5-cylinder. In 1995 GM began development of a modular series of DOHC, VVT (exhaust only) inline truck engines. In 2002 the inline 6-cylinder was released first in their midsize SUVs, followed by the 4 and 5 cylinder variants in their compact pickups. They came in relatively large displacements for low-end truck torque. 2.8L in the four, 3.5L in the five, and 4.2L in the six. In 2007, the smaller two were revised, with the four bumping to 2.9L, and the five hitting 3.7L with 242 HP and torque (up from 220 hp and 225 lb.ft in the 3.5L). This 3.5L is the engine in my Colorado. It has pretty good torque off the line, but the fuel economy isn't great.

Acura and VW made NA I5s as well. I haven't driven one but the I5 Colorado shop truck I drove at a college job was slow AF paired with a 4 speed auto.

I love the fact that a pretty smart car journalist was left to “who big speed daddy” to describe a car.

I have a CLS55AMG and wouldnt trade it for any car. They can be found for so cheap too. And the M113k is the best handbuilt engine from AMG. I got mine for 12.3k.

I have an Audi RS3, the only negative point I can mention is the famous unwanted lag that everyone hates when starting from a light or a stop sign.

FYI the NEW RS3 8Y does have the “e torque differential” with drift mode, same as the Golf R, you are driving an older 8V RS3. Also the 8Y is the fastest compact sedan around the Nurburgring, dethroning the BMW M2 Competition. Also the newer mk3 TTRS has the same aluminum block, the mk2 does not. Sometimes your guys’ history session is a lot more assuming then factual lol
