I appreciate you show the good, the bad and the ugly. I wish you a successful over wintering season.

I'm glad you are feeding them and getting them ready for your wimpy winters. The bee barns not producing honey this year is a puzzle. But if you are getting bigger you have to standardize because those bees are a lot of work. Have a good week.

Yes, the old Georgia wimpy winters :-)

So little time so much to do I get it. I'm glad you are going to make changes next year 😊 looking forward to seeing

There will be many exciting things happening next year. Some of the exciting things are happening right now but won't be reveled until next year. :-)

Uniformity of equipment definitely makes it easier to manage. I do like your bee barns though maybe you can just leave them as resource hives and pull queens out of them as you need and let them requeen. The extra deep frames do make it hard to be a true resource hive though since you can’t pull frames out. Good luck in whatever you decide. I’ll be watching! The dead hive tomb stones was a nice editing touch!

Agreed. I have until spring to decide. Thanks.

I had a hive that was used to breed wax months. I set it on the ground and the chickens cleaned it out in minutes.

Ha! That is what I did with the frames.

About the bee barns, I would recommend to keep them as they are. As I understand it, they are pretty light on maintenance and pretty good on maintaining a sizeable colony, so you could use them to provide you with some extra queens (and queen cells) if and when the need arises.

Agreed. I have until spring to figure it out. Maybe I could use them to make packages.

Hello! I was hoping you could recommend hive heaters for a double deep setup that’ll handle NY winters. Thank you in advance!

Either one of the two systems I built will work. Version one has been used successfully in Alberta Canada and version 2 with the bee barns have been used all over. Here is the first part of the 4 part video series on how to build them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q52qkJWNibKNeLc. Version two operates the same way just modified for the bee barn.

Did the bees in those first two hives all die or did the colony move elsewhere?
@BugFarmerBees3 ай бұрын
It looks like they were both absconds. No dead bees on the bottom board.

I always thought those Barns were crazy as making frames seems like a real PITA and the heaters was like What? Going everything 10 frame is smart as thats what I run but I'm getting some insulated hives as the frames still work in the premium equipment.. Some of my hives are RIP but not been a bad wax moth problem as I air them out once exposed to dry up the menacing worms. Looks like a 15% loss and had some nucs robbed and absconded from a lack of food, possibly too darn hot.

The Bee Barns worked well for what they are and as a hobbyist they are great hives. That said I am looking for production now. Standardization is the way.

What are Krynock bees ?
@BugFarmerBees2 ай бұрын
Crynock bees are bees from a fellow who breeds a hybrid between Buckfast and Italians. They have the quick build-up and larger over winter brood nest characteristics of Italians but produce comb and honey like crazy. Sometimes they are a bit aggressive though.

You seem to deal with a lot of SHB, why do you not use beetle traps or swiffer pads?
@BugFarmerBees2 ай бұрын
I use grub-x in the ground an d the beetle sucker 5000. I quit using oil traps after spilling and killing my bees and I never really got into the swiffer pad thing.
