When it comes to writing implements, I have some combination of an upgraded grease pencil, a regular pencil, a ballpoint pen, and a sharpie in every single kit I own. Depending on the size of the kit, there is either a small notebook or several sheets of loose leaf paper folded to fit. I save the tactical pens for my vehicles and for my EDC, but their main purpose isn't writing. The glass breaker on the end can do damage to softer materials, too, if you catch my drift.

I personally like an outdoor fanny pack for small kit because it pairs well with a backpack. Or can be used as a sling.

I'd take a bic or clipper lighter over a ferro rod in the short-term. I do not mess with cheap compasses, they can be worse than useless. I bought a decent Coleman map compass for seven bucks and took it apart down to the center part that rotates to save weight.

I like making my own kits from other kits. From a kit similar to this, i took a saw, a whistle and a case(slightly smaller and orange). In the case i packed some small tools like a folder, saw etc. I will pack it to my Badger Outdoor bag (it's a small backpack, it is made to be worn on a back but it has one strap/belt) that will arrive tommorow. I will have also a LifeStraw, NRC Foil (emergency blanket), bandages, a small fishing kit, dark chocolate (Poles make great dark chocolate), energy bars, my Mora Companion (in Poland they are very cheap, 6$ for a Companion, 2$ for Basic), custom hand made knife (4mm, Drop Point, full tang, D2 steel, heavy duty), a Clipper lighter, some old, communist matches, a fire straker with magnesium, tampons (for fire starting), a few meters of paracord, pen, paper, a medicine for stomach problems and a monocular. I hope i didn't forget antything lol.

I would use a fanny pack to free up your back for a backpack. I would include a Mora-HD, good multi tool, med kit that includes creams for bites, burns, antiseptic and bandages, a good water filter, head lamp w/extra batteries, ferro rod, fat wood, cup, metal spork, emergency tarp, 2 heavy duty 55gal garbage bags, and 50 ft tarred bank line. The regular camping gear should go into a backpack.

I would replace the survival tool card, the water carry thingy, and the bellow with a signal mirror, and a sillcock key. Also, I would upgrade the compass, the knife, and the flashlight. I would also add some zip-lock bags or put the case inside a zip-lock bag which can be used to carry water, maybe add some water purification tablets as well, and some tinfoil for cooking food or boiling water. Finally, maybe get rid of the pen and add some matches, pain pills, diarrhea pills and some sugar hard candy. It's an OK starter survival kit in my opinion, but you can make it better, great review.

In the German/Austrian mountains i always carry a military compass, in my bag there is a mirror map compass (vacation). Only in my bus back home i have a cheap compass on my emergency whistle, i know all the villages and cities there. I used to drive an ambulance in the region so there aren't many spots i didn't visit.

Bro, I would simply build my own kit the rate you're going, LOL. Though that's usually the best option for any person. These off the shelf kits are typically trash to begin with. Just look at this thing, it has that egg crate foam both top and bottom taking up way too much space. For the same price a much more comprehensive kit could be built into a smaller package with better gear. The fact everything is black or dark is a big turn off to me. Everything should be bright/unnatural colors because in a real survival situation your motor skills, senses, and mental acuity will all be shot. You drop one of those small items, or even the kit, good chance you'll never find it again.

@@Eidolon1andOnly I agree, building your own kit is better than buying these kits; and building your own kit is for people that are already knowledgeable about this stuff. This kit is for beginners, and it is okay for beginners since you want other people to get into stuff like this. Our community wants people to be interested in stuff like this not only for survival, but to get outside, enjoy nature, and learn to be self reliant.

@@ravnar7773 I really agree with your sentiment, and you bring up really good points. The one thing I'm concerned with is that beginners really don't know better and are easily mislead, so they get scammed. Beginners who are not too knowledgeable are also the most prone to accidents and finding themselves in a survival situation. If I may, I would like to showcase another kit, which is smaller, offers more, and in the same price range. It is not a perfect kit, but better than this one. I just saw it on another channel a few days ago. Would you care to check it out? I'll try to find it and give you the link. I don't think it is great, but a really good kit for beginners like you mentioned.

BTW, the striker on mine is not glued in. It's able to slide out if you have the strength in your fingers to pull the thing out as it does fit tightly in there, so it won't easily fall out.

another option instead of those tube bellows, is a pad. Something not to big, flat, not super flexible, but doesn't have to be solid either. You can fan the fire with this, instead of blowing through a tube to stoke the fire. At home I been using this really flat piece of wood that was going to be thrown away. It's somewhere close to 1foot by 1.5 feet rectangle shape. It works great! On a trip in the woods I'd have a square or rectangular seat pad with me to sit on comfortably and can use that as a fan for the fire. Some people use them foam pads that are for kneeling to do work like gardening or whatever. And those ones work great too! But it is nice to have in your backpack to give more cushioning to your back if you put it in against the back wall of the pack, so hard item in the pack aren't poking into your back. So a 2-in-1 deal there.

Regatdless if anybody thinks this is junk or not, it is a very good value. I bought a ferro rod, mylar blanket, billow, and that exact flashlight separately and paid $30. These few things makes this survival kit legit. Things like the compass maybe made out of cracker jack tin but I am willing to bet it works as good as any pioneer used. Depending on how long you have to survive, that knife will work. It will probably not feather stick very well but you can batton small wood with it and even if you break the handle or hinge, the blade can still be used. Better than trying to use a sharp rock or piece of glass to cut stuff. For $30 a well schooled survivalist can buy a few high quality items that will work well. But for people not interested in survival knowledge, this kit is absolutely better than nothing.

Seatbelt cutter/windshield hammers often have a hole in the handle for lanyards and such, this sounds stupid, but use a decent length loop of paracord and attach/loop your cutter/hammer combo to the buckle end by your seat (not shoulder strap buckle, the one by your butt you click into) then put the hammer/cutter between your seat and center console. In case of an accident this doesn't become a projectile and has little chance of getting lost or hitting you, the loop is right where you'd naturally grab to release a seat belt, With a good few inches or centimeters of slack on the loop, you could easily cut the seatbelt and free the tool and yourself.

You will get what you pay for--generally. A kit this cheap is virtually guaranteed to fail you when you need it most. I generally discourage people from buying "ready-built" survival kits for several reasons: first, most such kits are heavily stocked with cheap consumable items that often will not meet one's needs in an actual survival situation--and any permanent items are exceedingly low grade quality; second, such kits seldom cover all categories of need in a survival situation (shelter, fire, water, food, defense, medical, navigation and communication); and third, people who get kits like this tend to neither TRAIN with the kit, nor MAINTAIN it (usually tossing it it in a closet or trunk to be forgotten until something bad happens). It is far better to build your own kit for your own level of experience and environment(s), and to train using every single item the kit contains. JMO

The most dangerous and unreliable items in this kit are the compass on the paracord bracelet and the brass one. I have compared the accuracy of these with a known good compass and they are extremely inaccurate, especially the small ones. I would immediately replace the brass one with a better brand. Secondly, I have had some issues with those cheap Chinese made LED flashlights, either with the switch being unreliable or the LED flickering when the flashlight is bumped or shocked. The tactical pen should have a Fisher type ink cartridge which will make it much more reliable in cold and/or wet weather. A few pages of waterproof paper would also be a good compliment I completely agree with your initial statement of upgrading the items.

The "gray man" concept doesn't apply to a survival kit, and does not apply to something tiny that can fit into a pocket or bag. The absolute last thing you want in a true survival situation (not an evading situation) is not being noticed. Honestly if you're trying to evade people you're doing something shady to try to be evading. For an "honest" review you weren't very fair and definitely biased since you got sent that thing for free, and the "whistle" didn't even work. You were somewhat fair though, but pen and paper in any survival kit is just stupid. At no conceivable time would I trust a small piece of paper to leave a note/mark. There's nothing that a pen and a small piece of light weight paper that can blow away in the wind that can't be accomplished better with other means like big letters written with charcoal on a rock, a few rocks or branches signaling a an arrow of direction, some big letters written with a stick in the sand, or even carving something into a piece of wood or a tree. There's not much honest about your reviews, at least this one.

In a survival situation all your senses start to fail the longer you go without food, water, and restful sleep. Your dexterity also suffers and dropping something becomes a real possibility, black, camo, whatever colors are easily overlooked when dropped. This thing even comes with egg carton foam which takes up a lot of space? Not a fan of this kit or its price.

🤷‍♂️ It's a $30 kit, not a $100 or a $200 kit. So yeah, a lot of these products are on the cheaper side but that's what some people are looking for. Things like ferrocerium rods and fishing line don't have to be expensive to be effective.

@@bugoutbrothers I get that it's cheap. But it's also junk. Junk can make for a bad time in an emergency. You were sitting at a table in a climate controlled room and could not get either whistle to work and broke a piece off of the compass. If you really want to help and save people some money, I have a challenge for you. Put together a kit from your house using things that most people already have laying around. Then spend less than $30 on the things you don't have.
