Heat and AC are the two things that cause more desperation during the cold of the Winter and heat of the Summer. I have lost power for 10 days in the early Winter and for 7 days in the Summer and I wouldn't live without a generator now. I am still looking at the Titan solar generators as a back up to my gas generator because the power outages we have had the trees fall across the streets so it is hard to keep re-filling generators and no sun also makes it hard to use solar - plus, this past multiple-day storm, my brother had 3 generators needing repair so checking the generators every year and not leaving gas in them is important. I genuinely started buying little power stations for each room and one for the basement. Over-kill, maybe, but I look at what Texas went through and I have lost power like that more than once. But they lost it in February.

Very good video! Just a few extra notes, for when the S lasts indefinitely: you cannot possibly store enough water in the long run, look for a permanent water source; put a rain barrel under every rain pipe around your house. The more barrels, the better. The same goes for energy; in the long run you need a permanent source. Buy a wood stove and collect a nice pile of firewood. Finally I suggest buying a few Gosun Go solar ovens. (They are small). They let you boil water on solar energy all day long as long as the sun shines. Boiled water is safe to drink, very very useful and good for morale.

A good, incremental plan. However, I recommend doing the 7-day plan AND the Bug Out Bag simultaneously, for the simple reason that you might be forced to leave your house suddenly at any time due to fire, flood, neighborhood evac, etc.. You can grab the BOB so you have at least a bare minimum of essentials to get you through a couple of days.

If you family understands the need for life/car/health/home insurance they have the ability to understand emergency survival insurance. Water, food, medical and security are important. I've experienced many emergencies and it will take weeks, months for the government to help because we are the government's citizens, not their dependent children. Start inexpensively at first and build up. Use food banks, churches and charities for nonperishable food, if necessary.
@sandrataylor8966

You can store water in clean, empty, sanitized soda and juice bottles (ask trusted friends and family or look in dumpsters for them). Go to dollar and big box discount stores for medical, camp and security items. Preparation isn't paranoia but is methodical self reliance. You are not crazy for prepping but they are foolish for not prepping.

I really like your idea of a blackout bag or blackout tote. It is an excellent introduction to prepping. You might want to add entertainment, such as a deck of cards or a crossword puzzle book. A couple of points. 1. As far as disasters are concerned, you need to note where you live. A bugout bag is very important in certain areas. If you live near the Mississippi or Missouri rivers, floods can force you to bugout. If you live in forested areas of the southwest, fires can force you to bugout. 2. Up to 30 days, accumulating to shelter in place is fine. It is all you will need for local disasters. For catastrophes over 30 days where help is delayed, accumulation drastically decreases in importance and skill acquisition drastically increases in importance. Not only is massive accumulation expensive, time consuming, and requires a lot of space, skills will encourage others to work with you. 10 other people guarding their water finder/medic/trapper/plant identifier will greatly enhance your survivalability. Accumulate your personal medicine, as well as antibiotics and pain killers. If you buy a gun, go to the firing range. If you buy a trap, make sure you trap some animals. Explore your area for water sources and practice water purification. Learn gardening and practice gardening, even if it is only a 2' x 3' plot. Learn to grow sprouts at home and grow at least one batch every month. Take a first aid course. Expand medical kit, including antibiotic ointment and blood clotters. Learn edible plants in your area and "seed" your area with edible plants. Make sure you have a good bike and know bicycle repair.

I built a floor storage cabinet, to house 2 12-volt 125AmpHr Gel batteries (hooked in parallel for total of 250AmpHr@12V). Also in the cabinet is a 500 watt 12v-to-120vac converter (connected to 4 AC outlets), an 12-volt socket (think car cigarette-lighter socket), and 2 clamp-on lights (and cords) with 12VDC light bulbs (plus spare bulbs). Good for short term...unless it becomes necessary to break out the emergency generator. I built a 69.5 square-foot shingled shed (city regs fire up at 70 sq.ft. and larger) to store all the emergency supplies (generator, propane gas camp stove, etc). Your vids have given me many new good ideas on things to stock.

I live in Latin America power goes out frequently and for many days...Life here goes on normally as if there is power, nobody freaks out and everyone goes about their business. Those who have generators will use them, businesses will either use a portable generator or simply use hand held calculators to sum up your purchase. Gas stations have these cranks, they remove the cover of the pump and they insert a metal crank to dispense fuel so the gas attendant cranks it by hand into a gallon container then into your vehicle this way they can charge you the amount of gallons you buy. Refrigeration equipment keeps food cold for three days most stores sell out on the second day, they get new poultry or beef as usual because delivery trucks are refrigerated. Most people gather outside their homes at dusk to talk to the neighbors they take chairs outside and gather together to talk and stay up to date with current events. In the countryside most pheasants have never even seen electricity in their communities. Water is collected in barrels and plastic containers every day whether there is power or not it is customary to do so, specially since power outages are common. Nobody has guns and fishing rods and all these weapons because nobody freaks out. That only happens in the good old USA. 70 percent of the world is a third world country and they live this way. Only modern societies freak out because they had it easy, relying on technology and modernization.

I totally agree. Prep for where you live. I am on top of a hill and will never see a flood unless it is Noah. We have never had a tornado. We get power outages regularly from snowstorms knocking down trees and a few hurricanes have also knocked out power. We don't get the rolling blackouts like California and we don't get any fires that I can ever remember. Not even one. No earthquakes here. Definitely no tsunamis. But ice and snow and power outages have lasted as much as 10 days and cold temperatures and hot temperatures become a big deal when the power is out for a while. I do have a whole house gas generator. But I also have small power stations throughout the house so I can save the gas for the fridge and heat and cooling. I also have decorative rechargeable light sources everywhere. For me, I prepare in case I slip on ice and break something during a blizzard. (I have ice cleats and good winter clothing and highly insulated boots)

In regards to your question: 4 comfortable or 6 uncomfortable weeks of supplies. Anything more than 3 months doesn't make sense to me. Rotating those supplies so they stay fresh is gonna be a pain in the ass and storing them will take up space which I don't have. Going for dry-freezed stuff that doesn't need to be rotated is gonna be way too expensive. I'd rather take that money and invest it in skills that can help sustain me long-term, like good hunting and fishing gear and the skills of how to use them properly as well as medical skills and equipment.

great video! start slowly (but get started!) I recommend getting lights, radios etc that use same batteries. rechargeable are excellent. remember what you pack, you have to carry! i have 3 bags. and duplicate what is in them. 1 for vehicle, house , and one to carry if needed. this helps if a relative shows up or a friend you hand them a bag if needed.i would recommend LED for new lights. use lees power and brighter. use the old ones if that is all you have and you can convert mag lights to led with a kit. i have done this to 3 mag lights. having fm radio is great,but also get your ham license (some ham radios can pick up fm stations which saves space and batts) or at least some type of walkie talkie type radio, cb, gmrs etc. first aid kits are a absolute necessity! when your tired and irritated your will make mistakes which will result in injuries. for water at home get rain barrels and hook to your gutters. you can always filter it. use it for gardens, flushing toilets etc. Happy prepping, so if you ever have to use it, your good to go!

I like this set of concepts. Many people seem to be prepping for the total end of the world scenarios...where you'll most like face limited natural or localized disasters that will be resolved in less than a week. Power outages, wildfires, hurricane/tornado, snowstorms and something that someone somewhere will face every single year. Obviously, some will require that you leave your home, so you should be ready if that's something that you could face.

Your advice is sound, but if I may elaborate a bit, you don't have to rely on just Ramen noodles and highly salted canned meals. There are canned meats, various types of pasta and you can buy canned fruits and vegetables, instant rice, instant oatmeal, boxed or canned milk, and the basic staples such as flour (Wheat for long, long term storage), sugar, honey, salt, and seasonings. Of course these easy to make meals will require some cooking gear unless you have a gas stove. Canned fruits, gelatin and pudding can serve as desserts or treats. And bottled or canned juice will provide a break from just drinking water. And breakfast cereal is always an option. We had foods for a dialysis and a diabetic diet and both were also low sodium. And my family has endured several hurricanes which are always followed by a loss of power as long as a week. I used to partake in re-enactments and we'd take shelf stable cheese and eat that with bread or crackers. I used to make a meal out of a bullion cube, a can of chicken, Ramen noodles and a can of peas and carrots. I could have done more, but those were overnight trips, so I kept it simple as I used the old Esbit stove with fuel tablets to cook with.

most of this is great advice but one thing I disagree on (if it's for a long period) is not canned fuel pressurized but kerosene or white gas(Naphtha ) a 5 gallon container will last a lot longer than any pressurized cans or bottles. I live in Quebec and in 1998 we had this incredible ice Storm where no power for 3 weeks and I had 2 Coleman stoves going, 24/7 for heat too .

Have a 5 gallon bucket and heavy duty trash bags to use as a bathroom if you lose water. Buy a cast iron pan and enamel pot to use on grill or campfire for cooking. Charcoal grill with plenty of bags of charcoal will store well and can be used to cook and boil water. Firewood can be used if run out of charcoal. Have a headlamp available for every member of your family. Much better than a flashlight for doing tasks and navigating a dark house. Religious candles in Hispanic section burn a long time and put out lots of light and since they are already in a glass they are less dangerous and easier to use and only cost a buck a piece.

I would say instead of all the water buy a water filtration system where you can take any water and make it drinkable. You and also get a high powered pellet gun that shoots a pellet almost as fast as a 22 bullet. The reason I say this is I love my 22 but 22 bullets are expensive and difficult to get. Pellets are relatively easy to get and cheap to buy.

@christopherrowley7506
@christopherrowley7506 5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I'd even add: Before bug out bag, bug out vehicle. (or just do both of course). When I was a teenager we were ordered to evacuate for wildfires. My parents were out of town and I was actually staying at a friends place. Throughout the night me and my buddy took turns up on his roof watching the progression of the fire over the hills marching its way towards us. We took a day longer than we were asked to to evacuate: some put out fires in the neighbors yards while everyone else packed up the vehicles. I think more should be talked about bugging out in vehicles in the prepping community: too many people just write it off saying 'the roads will be blocked', which simply isn't true in many likely scenarios. The government doesn't even have enough resources to deal with local gangs let alone lock down an entire county. At one point we did get turned around by a roadblock but we simply took a backway that I knew wasn't on google maps (since you technically had to drive on private property for 25 feet) and we saw no more law enforcement: had the town to ourselves. What I learned from this experience was that having your stuff organized in your house is one of the best ways to be prepared to bug out. My friend's dad was a bit of a hoarder, and crap was super disorganized. It was complete mayhem trying to locate and pack up the most valuable stuff: guns, musical instruments, family mementos, etc. Stress was high, and it was a slow process. In this particular situation food and camping gear was actually pretty low on the list, since this was a localized disaster, you could simply drive out of SHTF and stay with family in a different area. Keep your house organized, own a couple vehicles you can pack gear and people into. That should be pretty high priority for the road to preparedness since it applies to high frequency scenarios. You should be able to pack up all of your valuables, and basic preps in an hour or less and be out on the road.

The first thing I prepared for was having the water cut off. Where I live it's not uncommon to wake up and have no water coming out of the tap. The cause of this is the water company doing maintenance on the pipes and needing to shut off the supply for a period of time. Like many people I want a cup of coffee when I wake up so the first thing I did was grab a 10L jug of water and put it in my kitchen. Now I can make coffee, have ample drinking water and even cook dinner if the water supply is turned off. It's not a survival situation but I'll be a lot happier when that day rolls around and I have the water I need.

1. loss of power 2. wind storm/ rain and snow. 3. fire/earthquake. Remember most of the stuff recommended here is PER PERSON in the family group. Poster "Haley Brink" mentioned her grand parents prepping. Haley, be glad you have them, mom is not reliable, she will freak if something bad happens. Q of the day; I have at least 1 month, right now. If power goes out the frig food, gets eaten first. then the dry and canned goods will be next. Sustainably about 3 weeks. but I replenish and add a little more each time I go to the grocery store. I'm building a 90 day supply slowly over time for two. Storage space is at a premium, being that we live in an apartment, and have very little sexure storage space.

Being in a city there are just to many people who won't have any supplies to get them past a few days or weeks and those people will start looking for those who have stuff. Each day that goes by they will be forced to do things they normally wouldn't do. That day will be day 3 when water starts to disappear and 3 weeks later when people get very hungry. If there is any sign of SHTF that could last a few days or longer, I'm packing my car with my BOB, food, other preps and taking my chances in the woods even just to be away from the city for 1-3 months to see how things go. I think the biggest mistake people will make is trying to live the lives they're used to living while in a SHTF situation. You want your lights and washing machine? Use that BBQ? You want a running fridge? All these things are just a massive signal to people around you that you have stuff and that will get you killed or hurt with your stuff taken. Someone or a group of people will try and go for it, eventually. Even if you have a gun, they will likely have weapons and they will be desperate, they will likely overpower you. You have to sleep eventually. I rather disappear, be far away from the crap, be away from as many people as possible and be hidden.

Most situations it’s better to bug in for a period before leaving. My closest has a false wall and has all my supplies. Go gray man and join the mobs during the day. Don’t eat you. Fill ya know...lose weight and with everyone else. Grow that beard. Let your hair tangle. Etc. Bugging out is too risky in the immediate. You need intel to know what’s impassable where threats are what the threats are where are population centers. Bugging out and taking your chances in the woods is silly. You have 4 walls and a roof at home. Stay as long as possible

@garystroud6153
@garystroud6153 Жыл бұрын
I am very fortunate to live in the UK where most of our utilities are reliable (in particular on the south coast where I am). The longest our power was out was overnight, in fact that was the last time, about ten years ago. There have been some brief cuts, just an hour or so since. Water has been in the news with climate change of late, mostly being asked to use less but an occasional burst main has caused "local" loss. Hardly a surprise since the system is almost as old as the US. We don't have extremes of weather like tornados, well there have been some but rare enough to make national news, or much in the way of blizzards. There are some but in places where they are expected. Floods have increased with climate change, again rare enough to make national news. My main concern is when I travel, an accident can close a major road for hours but the police usually manage to get the road clear either by turning traffic around or clearing at least one lane. Extreme weather can, and has, closed roads, sometimes without sufficient advance warning, but our weather service is usually on the ball. Warnings not to travel are mostly obeyed but some will always chance it or cannot avoid it. My biggest risk is a breakdown that I have no control over although I do have checks made as and when, I was a marine engineer so I know most of the signs, but a lot older now! When I travel for pleasure I usually have a caravan on the towbar (a trailer for the US) with all that implies but I still have a small bag and a water container as a "get out of jail free" card in the car. This has not stopped me from doing a little "prepping" though. I have enough food for over a week in the house, fairly comprehensive first aid gear, enough kit to cook and/or stay warm for longer, more tools than I need and a small generator to keep the freezer frozen for a week or so. I don't have a huge store of water but I do have several water butts that would serve (would need to be boiled but that's covered). Because I live in an urban area and I'm more or less surrounded by military establishments "Bug In" is probably my best option and there is little in the way of wilderness anywhere near me. Add in that we're a fairly small offshore island I'm not too concerned. As a "vet" I live by the six Ps - Prior Planning Prevents Pi** Poor Performance!

Starts with basics. Food water and heat if you don't have all those three you would die quickly if it was to dissapear For food canned food is cheap and last a long time dehydrated food is more expensive but can last more than a decade or two.if you are in the countryside you can grow your food. Water. You can keep some bottled water but it goes bad after a year.if you have a well that has water you can drink out off it's also a big plus. Heat. Blankets is the cheap way to go,wood stoves provides you heat and you can cook on it and there is plenty of wood if you live in the countryside near woodland area you can also hezt yourself with propane or fuel if you can't have a wood stove.

Does anyone know who to calculate how much time-worth of food preps you have? In other words, you may have buckets of rice, canned goods, etc...how many days or month is that? I personally have a spreadsheet of my inventory and I use the cost as a guide - two of us spend $350/month on food, so if I have $ 700 worth of food in my preps, I assume I have about 2 months worth. But is there a better way? What do you folks use as a formula?

When my wife & I staring prepping years ago, I made a place on my kitchen floor to store flats of canned red beans and flats of diced tomatoes. We like chili. I purchased 6 flats (12 cans each) of red beans, 6 flats of diced tomatoes, then wrote on the wall calendar the date of purchase. Six months later, half of those cans were gone. I know we have a year supply when those flats are stacked six high. Just write on your wall calendar on the date of purchase what you purchased to fill your pantry. When you notice the supply of whatever is half-way gone, you will have an idea on how much you'll need to get a one year supply. That one year supply is based on the key part of prepping; the ability to gather, grow and store food to keep up with what you have stored. You don't just stockpile a year's worth of food expecting things will get better within a year. You figure out a way to keep your stockpile re-stocked with what you harvest. You rotate what you eat, in other words, you eat the oldest stuff first. Cheers!

Just wanna pop in and give you some food for thought. This is very dependant on where you live and what hazards you face. I live in suburbia in southern california. Within the last year, we have been within minutes of evacuating on three seperate occasions because of wildfires. I even left work early one day because of it. The bags for us are SUPER important, because we might have only a few minutes to get our animals, whatever supplies we can manage, and get out. So our bags are vastly different than the usual "bug out bags" Ours focus on stuff for our pets, hygene and clothes for us, and some basic survival gear. Our most likely scenario is that we hve to evacuate to family 20-50 miles away, then try to continue our daily lives, going to work, etc, while we figure out whether or not we will have an apartment to come back to. (Im in the process of making sure we have three seperate locations of family/friends spread out in different directions with some supplies, clothes, and cash stashed there. But i am nowhere near complete) Additionally because of the fact that i live in a suburban desert, i make sure i have a decent amount of water on hand, as well as ways to gather, carry, and process more water. Silcock keys, water bags/bladders, and sawyer filters all work well enough, especially because i have zero worries about anything freezing.

more people are the 'bug in' type than they'd like to admit.Weather/power outage/ civil unrest, whatever...people will stay,at home, put as long as the situation permits. 90% of "preppers" are bugging in" and they dont even realize it.
@jasonrinaldo9300
@jasonrinaldo9300 5 жыл бұрын
90%? I’d make it more than that- because bugging out isn’t always practical unless you have a beach condo in Wilmington, NC, lol- The reason for that is: Weather- not every storm is a hurricane, not every hurricane is a direct hit on my location. Power Outage: 3 hours tops and less MOST of the time. Civil Unrest: as long as it’s not happening right outside my house, I’m good. If I can’t defend what I’ve got bugging in, then ya bail out. If weather is too dangerous, I’m bailing out. I’ve taken direct hits (my town) from Cat 1 & Cat 2 hurricanes- I can bug in. Sometimes a plan to bug out of my place could mean bugging in elsewhere 😉- bugging out isn’t any sign of a “true prepper”. That’s the typical “no true Scotsman fallacy”. Just because you bug in doesn’t make you less of a prepper. Bugging in is more practical in more cases than not. You leave when the benefit of retaining your primary shelter is no longer worth the risk of remaining there. Easy. SOME people won’t leave no matter what. I’ve seen hurricanes, and even a few racial tension periods where rioting seems to be the thing to do, never bailed out. Didn’t need to. Bugging out is an equation, plain & simple. Risk =Benefit. When it doesn’t ya bail. Some people want to be seen bugging out- because let’s face it, some people get off on it- which is fine, but ain’t my idea of a low profile- which is the name of the game- blend!

First video I thought would help me starting my journey into planning my preparations for all kinds of climate emergency madness coming ahead. There needs to be some huge social changes, mostly public funding and such, It's not as bad here in Canada as the US so I won't ramble further on that. The government has failed so many of it's people so blatantly it's sickening. I'm only 25 and so many millenials and gen x's are becoming aware of the urgency to protect our future and lives. I have keeping a journal to track everything I can about what life is like now because I think it's only going to be a few years until we really start to see some seriously uncomfortable changes. Especially effecting the poor and uneducated, so your video definitely misses one target... (it's me I'm poor) Personally, I moved out on my own while finishing college 2 years ago, and come from an extremely poor and broken family. I can't keep juggling 3 jobs while being stuck in geared to income housing... Living right in the heart of downtown next to the homeless shelters and trap houses. The changes I have seen just living where I do is horrifying. It's important to consider as many social perspectives you can when talking about important survival tips... We all feel the urgency to prepare for action .... I am very lucky to be Canadian, the government is garbage wherever you go in the world but I'm so grateful for our land and people here. Would like to get involved with some serious environmental fights happening while I can. I recently found and met some of my biological family and I have aboriginal heritage which has been exciting, gonna get my Metis status soon and first hand support the people struggling to protect our land.!!! May the force be with all of us on our journeys!
