Our Buick Straight 8 engine is getting closer and closer to completion! Davin works on fitting a custom exhaust manifold that needs to delicately fit between the aftermarket intake manifold that we've been asked to incorporate into the build.

When creating a dent onto a thin wall pipe, here's how: Mark the dent. The circumference, and the lowest spot. Then lay the pipe onto a sand bag, and use a hardened rounded dye and at least 2 Lb hammer. If your press has impact feature, use that. This creates directed shock impact which reduces the deviation of the overall pipe, it won't make the pipe oval. When pushed with soft material, against soft material, the press force spreads more evenly, and thus ovals the whole pipe. Also those brake drum/hubs could benefit from balancing. They are the heaviest rotating mass.

Sometimes, ya just gotta do with what you have and make it fit. I had to do that for many years in the motorcycle business and on my own cars and trucks. Strategic dents in headers and pipes are common across the entire industry... Can you simply order a different set? In most cases yes, but you will raise the cost and billable time for your customer, so rarely the route to take. Great job Davin, keep it up!

@@isaakwelch3451 In the early 50s, in hilly San Francisco, we used to say Buicks had rope drive. The dynaflow back then didn’t start in low, but in drive. You could hear those straight 8s rev, and the cars would slowly accelerate as if a rope, was being twisted until the car finally moved. Starting in Low required, moving the stubby shift lever,to the L position. I remember riding in the back seat of a Roadmaster with my friend to St. Helena. His mom would always shift to L at a standing start. “Saves gas”, she’d say.

The original engine in my ‘76 Nova was a 250 straight 6. Before building a 327 for it, I built the 250. First was replacing the integrated cylinder head (intake cast into the head) with a 1965 230 head, an Offenhauser 4-bbl aluminum intake and Hooker headers (dual 3-into-1 headers). I had the exact same clearance issues on the exact same header tubes. Oh the memories (or was it nightmares). 👍🏻

Had a friend years ago who's dad was Mario Andretti's tire guy. There's definitely an art to it even down to sculpting the rubber for the various tracks, angles, and weather conditions. Up to 36 sets of tires per car at Indy for practice and race day. Crazy.

Modifying headers to fit can take 3 or 4 times longer then expected ( been there ) Glade to see good clearance at all points needed and hope the headers can be routed away from starter as heat from headers can cook a starter in very short order. If room allows, wrap the tubes with hi heat header wrap to keep under hood temps down . Very interested in the Buick Convt .

I'm not sure about the width and reverse of the rims, the 'Taylor Made wheels" where all the same size on my 68 Camaro Street Stock #59 that I ran at Ascot Park , Corona Raceway and Orange Show Fair Grounds in So Cal in the late 80's, tire stagger is extremely important, this is how it was explained to me, the tires have numbers on them that indicate which mold they came out of, you want all of your tires to come out of the same mold, then after mounting and balancing them you inflate all 4 of them to 100 PSI (yes, that's correct), then measure the circumference of them, in the middle of the tire, unbelievably they can vary by as much as 3-5 inches, then they are installed at race pressure in this position RF-RR-LF-LR, tallest one to shortest one, it does make a big difference, a good ol' boy gave me this advice one night at Ascot Park, I honor him by passing it on
