Buick Regal Corgi Kojak restoration

The Buick Regal model was built in 1975, when the TV series Kojak was at its peak popularity. Corgi built this 1 : 36 scale model and fitted it with lots of goodies. The Buick included two figures from the series, had opening doors and a latch under the rear bumper that would fire when turned. My model was complete except for the Kojak figure. I included a small Corgi junor model in the film. He came on the market in 1977, as a complement to the big Buick. I made replica wraps of both models and completed the missing signal light. Hi Jan I'm turning 60 this year, so age is correct. In Poland, in terms of series, it was quite calm. I could watch a lot of Western TV series, there was Kojak, there was Rewolwer and Bowler hat, of course an English saint. Kind regards

Very nice models Paul congratulations. There ’s a documentary on the tube where an engineer who worked with Corgi explained what made the sales skyrocket and the brand so famous. He explained that when they released the Volvo 1800 , the TV serie The Saint with young Roger Moore was having a lot of success. Someone at Corgi said , why don’t we make it "The Saints car " ? Shabaaam !!! That was the idea , and as a lot of a cars were already famous from the cinéma and TV series , the 007 Aston Martin , the Batmobile, Chitty chitty bang bang etc, followed and became collectors classics worlwide. He also said that paying a few hundred thousand pounds in royalties to the cinéma and the TV was peanuts because of the mass production process of the models that made them cheap to build even with metal and therefore so profitable. So Kojak, James Bond and Batman have been the best salesmen for Corgi , Dinky and Matchbox. What I don’t understand is , if the models where so cheap to mass produce and came out at a low unit price from the factory why where they so expensive in France or in Germany back in the seventees ? I remember the models beeing always on shelves with the "expensive" toys and locked out of reach in toy shops ... 😢 21:59

You're right, of course, but at least in France, Germany, these models were on store shelves, while in Eastern Europe, unfortunately, they didn't exist, so even in the 70s we couldn't look at them. Kind regards

Great paint work by the way Paul , I like that shiny bronze very much. Personally I would have sprayed a thick coat of gloss varnish after having masked the windows to make it even more shiny , but thats a plastic modelling technique you don’t use I think...

Ha la sucette à la fin...génial. Pour info, la chaine M6 sur youtube publie régulièrement des épisodes de Kojak. Je n'appréciais pas à l'époque (né en 1969), mais avec le recul, cette série (les premières saison) était particulière et dépassait la "simple" enquête policière. Pour ce qui est des véhicules, j'ai eu le plaisir d'avoir le petit modèle. Je me souviens de la couleur particulière, et puis la largeur du véhicule. Merci pour toutes ces vidéos...un retour dans un passé magique...C'est une émotion forte qui survient quand je vois que tu restaures un véhicule que j'ai aussi eu. Je me souviens d'une "vieille" Majorette...Peugeot 504 ambulance...les Matchbox, Corgi, et puis plus tard les allemande Siku, que j'appréciais moins (échelle différente, et cette ligne supplémentaire sur les pneus qui faisait que toute la largeur des pneus ne touchait pas le sol. Tu pourras peut-être m'aider. Je n'arrive plus à me souvenir de la marque qui vendait des voitures dans des boîtes (encore dans les années 90). je me souviens d'un modèle Audi, en taxi Audi 90 ou 900, modèle de véhicule très rectangulaire. Une marque que je trouvais plus aboutie que Matchbox et même Majorette. Si tu me lis et que tu as une idée... ;-)

Great job! Really! My friend had one of the 1/43 scale Kojak Buick Regals. I like how you go through many intricate steps restore them correctly. Might I suggest using Molotow chrome to restore the shiny bits? Up to now, I find it probably is the closest to chrome paint you can get and it can also be shot from an airbrush. Great restoration! There were two Kojak figures produced with the bigger model: one wearing a hat, and one without. The second is the rarer of the two. I had the one with the hat. This is an early example of producing a toy from an adult TV show. I knew a lot of kids who weren't allowed to watch the show. My dad loved it, though, so I was allowed to stay up and watch it with him. Telly Savalas was great, but generally played evil heavies in the movies. Kojak showed him in a completely different light - still a tough guy, but this time, one with a heart. A brilliant bit of casting.

There are 2 box variations, one is spelt as KOJAK buick , second is spelt KOJAK'S buick , all 1,36th scale cars are varying shades of bronze, corgi weren't that accurate mixing paint between production runs , mostly all suffer from weak suspension and chrome affects wearing off very rapidly, its very difficult to obtain a good original, those that are comand 3 figures. Lovely paint finish on yours paul , Swansea never achieved that level of gloss 😊.

Hi Paul. I was just wondering why you do not do the chroming before you fit the bumpers/fenders. That way there would be no risk of getting any chrome on the paintwork?. Still another great resteration.

Thank you very much . Of course, you should always do chrome plating before assembling the model. Unfortunately, chrome takes a long time to dry, and I usually don't have that much time. That's why I prefer to chrome on a complex model, so there is no risk of fingerprints before drying, and a twisted model is more safe for chrome. Kind regards
