In the early 90’s I traded a nearly mint 87 Montecarlo SS straight across for a almost showroom condition 84 Regal T-type which I told my parents it only has a v6 so insurance would be cheaper and it’s an older car but they didn’t know anything else about the car so sounded good to them of course. Lol ! Some time had passed and the car seemed a little low on power which turned out to need a new high flow catalytic which I went with a flowmaster brand and got the car back which it was now on a whole new level. I was on Kitsap way in Bremerton Washington and pulled up next to a really nice 66 396 SS chevelle . Once the light went green we both pulled away lead footed and that Chevelle never got past my drivers door and I was slowly pulling away from him and finally had to let off . He knew what I had and all he could do was give me a thumbs up . Pretty awesome cars for sure!

My dad bought a 1987 GN new in December of 87. He still has it as I did a full restoration on it. It was used as the family car for the first 10 years. BTW the head of GM did not cancel the GNX because of its dominance of the Vette. The 1988 Regal was designed in 1985 as the replacement before the GN started making headlines
@dukecraig2402 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, all these people who claim that are talking from their emotions instead of facts, 1987 was slated to be the last year for that chassis that 3 different divisions of GM used including Chevrolet for their Monte Carlo, it was already a done deal that had absolutely nothing to do with anything Buick was doing. The internet can be a great source for information, the problem is 90% of it is malarkey.
@markman7 Жыл бұрын
Also, GM started the GM-10 program (W body) in 1982 which was to replace the G body and was way behind schedule, but had it been kept on schedule, the GNX would have never existed as 1987 Regal models would have been GM-10 W body FWD cars.

I doubt that the turbo Buick was killed off because it was too fast. GM, being a corporate conglomerate, had most of their brands (other than GMC and Cadillac) using that same chassis. The Monte Carlo, Cutlass, Regal, and Grand Prix were all on the G-Body platform, and the writing was on the wall that GM was going to shift to front wheel drive for the '88 model year. In fact, because the GNs were selling so well at the end, GM extended the assembly of them for a few more months into the late fall which would have been technically the 1988 model year (not sure if they extended the assembly of the '87 MY for any of the Monte Carlo, Cutlass, or Grand Prix or regular Regals as well).
@stevencovington4715 Жыл бұрын
GM built the other G-bodies as 1988 model year because the 5.0 (305) and 5.7 (350) engines were still certified for emissions,; but the 3.8 (231) Turbo was not. Another fun fact: these 'continuation' cars were the only TRUE Buick Grand Nationals; Prior cars were Buick Regal with WE2 Grand National option package. The window stickers tell the truth! And you couldn't get any other Turbo Buick, just the Grand National.

The fact that the GNX beat the Corvette may have made the GM brass less than thrilled, but the real reason the Grand National was cancelled is they lost the G Body platform at the end of the 1987 model year. Buick knew that 1987 was going to be the last year for the G body which is why they decided to build the GNX in 1987. If the rear wheel drive G body platform continued beyond 1987, Buick would have continued to sell the Grand National.

The regal never beat the corvette, the GNX did, I bought one used in 1992, and it was a bomb. The only car that was that fast was the gmc cyclone I bought afterwards. My friend had a riviera which was even faster than the both of them but I don't remember what year it was. All I remember is that it was a T-Type turbo model.

Yup...that be about right. The GNX came derived from the Regal but you already knew that. Thanks for watching

The platform was deleted, hence no more "g" bodies so it was discontinued. My very first car was a 1973 Regal, awesome car that took a beating from a 16-year-old punk. I traded it in for a 1978. Sure, miss both of them!!!!

I remember Olds having an 88 Cutlass Classic along side of the new rounded Cutlass model. The Classic had more customers around it in the showroom than the new model.

Same thing with the Trans Am it beat the Vette in 1973 - 1974 with the 455 Super Duty V8 and with the 1989 Turbo Buick V6 with different heads.Thats why GM got rid of Pontiac because it was kicking the Vette ass.

Incorrect of they killed it because of the Corvette, they killed it because of Rodger Smith's experiments (W-body car, Saturn) . Little known the GNX engine was offered on the '89 Turbo Trans Am..

GM did not like that the GN could smoke the 'vette but that's not what killed it. The pre-planned platform change by stupid corporate execs killed it and made it a sad shadow of its former self. I had a '86 Regal T-type and I wish I still did! The 'Darth Vader' Grand National was one of the coolest looking cars ever made.

BACK IN MY DOPE SELLING DAYS I BOUGHT 3 REGALS AT DIFFERENT TIMES. MY FAVORITE ONE WAS MY BLACK ONE WITH T-TOPS AND THE BLACK AND GREY INTERIOR!!! I PUT 20 INCH CHROME DAYTONS ON IT WITH TIGER PAW BLACK WALLS. EVERYBODY WANTED TO BUY THAT CAR FROM ME.

I bought a new ‘83 T-Type. Beautiful car but it went through 3 transmissions in 3 years. All the problems made it a true hanger queen.

Owned an ‘87 GN and it was by far the coolest car on the road. Yes, it beat Corvettes - I did several times - and yes Chevy tried to look like it with the Monte SS but the GN was a masterpiece. I miss it dearly every single day. They should’ve revived it as Dodge did the Challenger and Charger.

my buddy drag races a 87 GN,he said it puts out 1,500 horse power,his old gn that he drag raced took it for a joyride on normal roads,he wiped it around a tree

Love how they just skipped over the T Types, which were actually faster in the 1/4 mile

We loved that you watched our video. True but not enough time. Studies show that our viewers only watch about 5 minutes and they our out! Thanks!

@@ThisOldCarChannel unfortunately so, I just hate that the fastest car of that era takes a backseat to the flashy one
