As an 18 year old Private leaving home for the first time, I was welcomed in to my first platoon at Fort Lewis right away. It really was like family. We were infantry so the platoon was all male. Their wives took great care of us single soldiers. Hot meals on holidays, BBQ on the weekends, making sure we stayed out of trouble if we had too much to drink. Great memories. I miss those days and those people often.

My son had an offer on the table from his mentor to pay for his college in lieu of joining. He wanted to give RASP a shot so he took an 11X contract. He didn't select but he's being encouraged to go to ranger school. It was his path to choose and so far it's allowed him to gain some perspective in life. You almost can't do life wrong, no matter how crazy it seems..🫡

AGREED.I served in the army too and that's what soldiers do all day every day. LOL. What the public doesn't know is ( depending on your unit/platoon ) most days soldiers don't have much to do,they have morning formation,then go home/barracks,then maybe a formation before taking an hr & half lunch break,go back home.barracks till end of day formation,then home/barracks again.Then complain about how hard they work. Yeah,right. LOL.

@@JohnJohn-co9yz That's not the entire army tho,just certain platoons during certain time periods or cycles.Then when they do get assignments or training periods they're very busy.And what folks seem to forget when the deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan were going on the army had the longest deployments,a year total and sometimes more. My first deployment to Iraq ( with a Texas guard unit ) was with an infantry unit was 1 yr & 6 months of combat missions.But,we were so busy those months flew by very fast.
