Good ideas. I see it’s been mentioned but yeah you need to be picky when picking lint and make sure it’s from cotton cloth. I like to put mine in paper pulp style egg cartons then separate. I put few in each of my fire kits. After read an article in a magazine years ago I realized I was guilty of something, I always have fire starters in my backpack but I didn’t always have my backpack. How many times have we got out of the truck (especially while hunting or scouting) to check an area or walk a ways down a trail looking around without a backpack because we are just going a couple 100 yards without our backpacks and where’s our means of starting a fire , it’s in the truck. After that when I’m in the woods, usually hunting, I have fire starters everywhere. One article of clothing when hunting I always have on is my hi-vis vest so it has fire starters, so does my jacket and I have at least a lighter in my shirt or pants. One thing I’ve told my hunting partners is something bad happens I plan on riding out with the fire crew that comes to put out the forest fire.

The dryer lint probably wasn't all coton. You mentioned wanting the cotton balls to be all cotton. Also, a lot of clothing and bedding is now flame retardant! I guess that wouldn't be useful for fire starting! Loved your poem at the end!

Hey Rick, as much as we enjoy your travel/exploration videos I really like the gear and gadget show and tell stuff too. Always look forward for your next show. Terribly sorry about ol Shoestring. I know you guys were kindred spirits. But,on a happier note, I'm sure you have heard about the EXPLORE ACT going through Washington that will reduce all the restrictions on filming in national parks. Happy travels. Say hi to Linda.

I heard about that and I hope it passes soon. In the meantime, I heard that the NPS isn't pursuing anyone filming at this time in order to avoid litigation while the new bill is making its way through. I don't know if that's true or not and I, personally, am not willing to take any chances.

Thanks for the useful advice. I have traveled a little more than half time year round since 2013 (I'm 76 and making up for lost time). I'm a bit of a klutz (I'm a mathematician - use your imagination) and have mostly avoided campfires. I'm going to try out your advise. Please put a plug in your narration about making sure your campfire is "dead out" when leaving it unattended. During the tourist season I find about 20% of fire rings I run across still have smoldering embers if not a flame! It really pisses me off. Especially since my house burnt down in the Camp Fire (its OK for me, I was away at the time and only lost one item a cared about).

I can attest to how well a ferro rod and cotton balls with petroleum jelly works. If you pull the cotton ball so a bunch of strands are exposed, it will flame up easily and burns long enough to feed tender and make the fire grow.

To get best waterproof matches for almost FREE, dip matchsticks in melted candle wax, except the heads. Better than expensive ones, can control burn rate with how thick coating is. Best flint method is not to strike, but drag. 2nd, better to drag the stone than metal. Also away from wind, can cover with body & jacket. Tinder has to be fine & catchy & dry. Also shave a stick that burns well by Knowing your wood. Shave into a real thin bushy feather-stick with fine hairs to put on your tinder nest. ESEE flint steel is probably one of the best to buy. Got a notch for bow drill too. Making your own steel is best tho.

Good morning. Great video. I use most everything you presented in my fire kit as well. I do depend mostly on my wax and drier lint starters though. I use drier lint (a lot if it), a bit if sawdust from my building projects, or shavings, and the left over candle wax from my christmas candles etc. I save those paper egg cartons. I melt the wax, put the lint etc it it, moosh it till it is saturated with the wax. Then I put this mixture in each section of the egg carton. Once it's cooled, I just separate them with a sharp knife or scissors. I put these in my kit and then toodle off to camp. Lol I just light the edge of the egg carton part and my fire is blazing in short order. Oh, I am so saddened to learn of Shoestring's passing. He was amazing. RIP Shoestring.

@JustMe-dv5ix
@JustMe-dv5ix 5 ай бұрын
@@gonagain Yes Chaga comes from birch trees, it is a fungi and the outside looks like a burnt lump on the standing tree, once you whack it off the tree and cut into it it will remind you of cork by color and spongy feel. Cut the chaga in chunks and just let dry in the sun several hours. Amadue is from horse hoof fungus, It grows on side of downed trees and ones still standing, can be birch, elm and many others. It does look like a horse hoof and the top is hard as a horses hoof. Underside has round pores of a cream colour when new, Looks brown when it is older. The pores on the bottom are circular. Spore tubes can be cut away and the hard shell on top removed with a sharp knife, and that will leave you a layer of brown amadue that you boil in water and wood ash, then rinse squeez out what liquid you can then lay on a flat rock an pound with another untill it looks kind of ragged, then let dry. It will take a spark before you process it but works much better after processing.
