I just built my first Harley Benton kit. I basically recreated the Paul allender signature PRS. It's a very nice kit. I upgraded some of the hardware, but everything that came with the kit was decent quality and these kits are a great way for a person to build their dream guitar on a budget. Everything went together well. The wood was great. The neck was great. I hardly had to touch the frets. Great fretwork. Also the purple heart fretboard is really nice. It's right between rosewood and ebony. I recommend these kits to anyone. Very easy to assemble and the end result is great.
@lostreb2 жыл бұрын
I was really impressed the neck came drilled. For someone like me that does a lot for my peace of mind. I hate ruining a perfectly good neck and / or body because of mis-calculations. And of course, Max wouldn't be Max if he wasn't planning on adding his own personal details, accessories, touch, as well as his personality to the build. I can see it all now...Max at a gig and launching rockets with his guitar!!! Love it!!!! Great video, Max. Please keep them coming.

Im working on a Pbass kit for my dad from HB. Make sure you sand that sealer off of the wood because it has some sort of insane clear coat that will repel stains. I plan on relicing the pbass and putting our last name on the headstock.
@lostreb2 жыл бұрын
Great tip and great comment!!! Just curious, do you happen to know if that clear coat also causes problems with using a polyurethane clear? If it does I'm interested in if you think that clear coat is something that is applied to protect the wood while the kits are being assembled, as in dirty fingerprints, for example, and is intended to be sanded off before the kit is assembled?
@thedude77262 жыл бұрын
Good luck bro!

@@lostreb Im not sure what the intention is because the wood is very light colored and needs some love to get it looking good. Paint might be able to stick to that clear coat but I wanted to stain the wood and try and make it look a little more beat up (I tooks a blow torch to it a little too)
@lostreb2 жыл бұрын
@@Wurmt0ngue Thank you for the reply. I was curious as to what to expect. If the wood looks really good, I'd lean more to stain or clear poly. If not, that's when I'd look to trying to come up with a nice paint. Thank you again. You absolutely answered my question.

I bought two over time. One I had burned with a kitchen blow torch then went over with bees wax. All black hardware. Locking tuners. Sounds amazing. And that one I built for my son. The second one I tried painting it. I went with “plant yellow” again all black hardware. Locking tuners. Paint job was a 7/10 but again sounded awesome. On both I had to fully insulate with copper tape. And bought some cheap emg style pickups for only £7 each. Honestly after buffing down the frets, and putting them all together. Probably the best guitars I’ve played. I really want to build more.

If they weren’t so expensive, I’d say to drop a Floyd FRX system right on the top of that guitar… That would be awesome, but at the same time defeat the affordable aspect of the challenge I guess.

This would also negate the affordable aspect of this guitar, but I'd say Sophia over FR any day.
@tony_n3162 жыл бұрын
@@BaldPerspective Sophia makes great stuff too, but the Floyd FRX is a top mount system designed specifically to be installed on Gibson style guitars that don't have routing in the body. To use a Sophia, you'd have to route out the body as far as I know.

The end of life by another life. That signal of repertoire to which none shall so ever seek with righteous hands. This, being the word, this being the term, things being snapped and bringing out the gauge, the game and reason for sicknesses to end, and newer problems to be solved. This deep echo is a cerebus, which with many heads conditions the longevity of certitude. And the bastion of elements was regarded as nuance in their name. Very much studious and overtly confident to the name. Devout character being serviced to bring joy to the familiar eyes suggesting their own downfall and grazing the path of least resistance to time's latency. An up and down we all must feed on to taste the contentment.

Kits are the way to go if you want to start building and selling guitars. Warning though, the low cost onslaught of guitars ( good thing ) will hurt your profit margin unless you have an angle like maybe a well know pick up winder making your pick ups.

I've done three so far. They are inexpensive and fun to do. I did a Jazzmaster, the SG, and the PRS style. If you decide to stain make sure you sand them really well because they come with a sealer on them for paint. If you have some extra good parts like tuners or pickups etc. you can upgrade the kit but they sound pretty good for a kit under $100. Check out the last contest they had there were some awesome builds.

I wish that pictures could be posted in the comments section because I too recently bought a kit. It's an Ibanez JEM style body (like the one Steve Vai plays but with six strings as opposed to seven). I have painted the body with an acrylic paint and will be applying Tru Oil to the neck and body for the glossy shine. A friend of mine called the color "TARDIS Blue" so I might put a TARDIS decal on the body as well.

I would really like it if people would say "assemble" and "finish" and not "build". I mean I am not against the practice as it's a great way to get to know the mechanics of a guitar but when you say you build something it should include glueing, routing, selecting the wood, carving the neck, etc. When you skip the hardest step, saying "build" sounds kind of like stolen valor in my opinion. Again, I think the modification and stuff is totally a legit art in itself and I love that shit. It's what got me into building guitars in the first place.
