I have a suggestion. For those who don't have a welder. Drill 4 holes in bottom of tank for legs. Then use long thick bolts with a nut on the underneath to keep them in place. quick and easy no welding required. You will have to skip the plates on the front but that shouldn't be a big deal.
@TobyFireandSteel
@TobyFireandSteel 9 ай бұрын
It's not a bad Idea bud cheers. But how do you weld the burners in or weld the 2 halves of the cylinder back together. It would really need to be a full redesign. Unfortunately to be done well we'll this one requires a welder. Though I've definitely seen forges of a different style that dont 👍🏼

@TobyFireandSteel you don't, the top would be the lid and as far as the burner goes its basically a propane torch stuck into the side. There's an excellent video on it and you can actually hear the guy explaining everything when he's making it 😅

How easy or difficult would it be to apply a hinged door, would a hinged door lose heat? Reason I ask is, what happens when you need to replace the insulation? Or would it never need to be replaced? If it does how many really hot burns would you get Out of the gameco kit you bought?
@TobyFireandSteel
@TobyFireandSteel 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah luke its definitely an option. You can also weld lugs on each side and bolt the two parts together. I decided not to as for the 2 minutes it will take to cut the welds the one occasion in 5 years that the insulation needs replacing its not worth it to me. As for use time I really couldn't tell you burn times but I'd say 1000's I know guys you use them frequently and are 5 years in. Its really more about hours of use. If you're using for 5 hours a day, several days a week it will probably only last 2 or 3 years. Maybe less.

Awesome video Toby, now you've been using it for 12-18 months what would you do differently? How do you find the size of the openings front and rear that you chose and can you get it hot enough to forge weld?
@TobyFireandSteel
@TobyFireandSteel 5 жыл бұрын
Now that's a great question. I'm intending to do a video on some of these points. I'm really happy with the front and back holes they both cover with a brick well. That said a slider to allow the bricks to be a little protected and not fall off is a much better idea than just a shelf especially as I made mine to shallow originally. And yeah its amazing at high temps forge welding with relative easy. Thank you so much for your question
@chrishayes5755

this is one of the better forge building videos. one problem though is your open area inside the forge is too large IMO, especially for a single burner. are you able to reach forge welding temps?
@TobyFireandSteel
@TobyFireandSteel 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate 👍. The interesting thing is the internal size of the forge isn't to relevant to a certain point obviously. Its more important that you can block the openings off a bit. But yeah the short answer is. It easily gets to forge welding temperatures. No problem at all. It is a very good burner too though.
@WYTW1DOW3R
@WYTW1DOW3R 4 жыл бұрын
Also, about the front fire brick. You could easily cut out the area that's hitting the front guards so it'll fit over the guards or just cut it to the inner diameter of the opening, secure a short handle to the brick and good to go.

Hi, I'm pretty inexperienced at fabrication but am thinking about building a forge from 16cm steel tube, rather than a gas bottle (maybe 400-500 long). The kaowool in the Gameco burner kit won't be quite the right size for me, huh?
@TobyFireandSteel
@TobyFireandSteel 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean awesome building a forge is awesome. But if your asking for my advice I'd say 160mm id is just to small mate by the time you've insulated it ( regardless of type of installation) I just wonder if it would be to small to be practical. Are you planning on using it for knives exclusively? No hammer or cleaners etc? I think the reason a lot of people use 9kg gas bottles is they are readily available and the over all finished dimensions are good for several applications. If you do decide to go ahead with Gameco burners for your own design forge or even get a whole Gameco kit remember to use the discount code TFS10 together 10% off. Also if you dont used a gas bottle design the Gameco list still sounds like it would fit your dimensions. If not try Field Furnace in Sydney for refractory needs bud. I hope this helps. Please keep asking questions as you go.

@@TobyFireandSteel Karim at Tharwa Valley recommended I go with the thin pipe for efficiency's sake. But if the kaowool is 75 thick that won't work. Maybe 250mm. I will definitely use the discount code, thanks very much.

I noticed you've got a couple of kids running around and I'm sure you know how unthinking they can be. Since the forge will remain hot well after you shut it off, you might think about putting an open screen over the sides and top to prevent them (and you) from accidentally bumping into it and getting burned. It shouldn't interfere with the forge's function and would remain within the envelope of the cart its on.

I lost audio at the exact moment as you (3:35---right at the transition of intro and the instruction video), except I only lost sound in the right speaker/headphone cup. So what I believe has happened is that (probably)the intro was filmed with different gear than that used to shoot the video. Seems the intro was shot in high-def while the video used a phone camera that could take a beating in a shop environment but suffered a bit in the A/V areas. The sound will cut out entirely if you are watching on a device with a single mono speaker or speaker set to mono in your audio settings. Hope this helps.
