I mean it’s pretty screen accurate compared to buying A $300 ultra saber that don’t make them exactly like the ones in the movie. And the Disney ones are cool but they are not bright or loud. So this is perfect imo especially for making a film which is what I will be doing

The trick with the graphite is intriguing, I've always thought that you couldn't get a pvc hilt to look like metal no matter what you try--thanks for proving me wrong.

Hello Katie, thank you for watching and leaving a comment. I'm now a believer in this method. I saw someone make a very convincing plastic old west rifle on therpf.com (prop forum) using graphite powder. I gave it a try and I really like: 1) how easy it is to do and 2) how convincing it looks. As you probably know, its tough to get a realistic metallic finish with spray cans. Airbrush is a different story. For ease of use, and for looks, graphite powder is great for props!

outstanding job. was the graphite the same stuff locksmiths use to lube locks. I ask because that's the only kind I know. Thanks
@HappyTrooperDotCom8 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for watching, and for the nice comment. It is my understanding that locksmith graphite and artists graphite is the same thing. Graphite :-) I purchased a jar from Amazon for 12$ an it goes a LONG way. I have used it for: a Tusken Sniper scope, this hilt, Han Solo blaster, Princess Leia blaster, and a scratch-built T-21. I still have well over 3/4 of the jar left. If you get some graphite for prop weathering, I recommend getting a jar like this amzn.to/2ingBvE The little locksmith tubes may not have enough? Good luck on your build!

One trick you can do to get blades is before you put in the conduit, drill a hole in the middle. Since the conduit is 1/2 inch, try making the holes big enough to fit a 1/4 wooden dowel or a PVC pipe. As far as the cross blades (or exhaust ports), either edit that in post or get pipe or dowels short enough to stick out. The only part that maybe difficult would be blade retention so that when you're dueling it won't fly out. Also, blade retention on this design might not make it as aesthetically pleasing.

Any thoughts on using metal pipes/fittings instead of PVC? Do you think I'd run into issues cutting it with a hacksaw and using metal drill bits? Any other issues you can think of? I know it'll be most costly for sure and probably have to go to a plumbing supply place. Thanks for the really well put together video. Your steps are so well laid out.
@HappyTrooperDotCom8 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for watching and for the nice comment. I don't think you'd have issues cutting metal pipes with a hacksaw (provided you have a metal cutting blade) or drilling. I did it in a previous video for a Darth Vader type hilt: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmfOmJKagpt-qbs Unfortunately, my templates won't work for the metal components as they were measured specifically for PVC. You can do what I do...wander around the store and try to get weird/unrelated parts to fit together. If you do get a metal hilt constructed, please post a link to your video and/or pics. I would love to see it!

Ello there. I am looking to do a mara jade style cosplay in about two weeks and have a limited amount of time for a build (about a week as I need to figure out and to also sew the outfit). I have read conflicting issues that she carried two sabers at one point (purple and not the skywalker gift one), both were thinner hilts and one had a shorter dagger-like quality to it. Any suggestions on the size pipes I would need for them?
@HappyTrooperDotCom7 жыл бұрын
Hello, unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with Mara Jade's sabers. I've seen pictures of them, just not sure how to best go about them. I typically walk around the hardware store and pick up pieces to see what looks good and what fits together. Perhaps you can use some ideas from the Kylo Ren hilt and the Darth Vader inspired hilt I did here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmfOmJKagpt-qbs The 2 are basically sink tailpieces with 1.5" PVC parts. You can use the tailpiece as the main part of the hilt and make the ends out of the PVC, secure them with friction tape and possibly pop rivets. If you make one, make a video to show us how it comes out! :-)

Great work. I've been getting into lightsaber prop building recently, as the weather has kept me indoors. I am a blacksmith usually, so this is a nice break from the heat. :) Your tutorials are awesome. Really. I owe you credit to the first one I made and game away as a birthday gift (though I am not big into making PVC 'blades'...just the hilts). I was wondering though: Can you do a tutorial on how to make Kylo Ren's hilt using metal materials like sink piping, electronics misc., etc.?? That would be epic. I am currently doing that myself, and I would relish the chance to see how the master does it! :D

Thank you very much for the kind words! I think the next step into these tutorials for me is to start integrating some electronics (lights/sounds). 15.3 for the 1 1/2inch pipe is that the length of template should be too get proper wrap ? having trouble printing to get that size , tried fit too screen and off and both still short. any ideas ? should i mess with scale till those numbers achieved?
@HappyTrooperDotCom7 жыл бұрын
Hello John, I just printed the 1-1/2" PVC template and measured it with a metric ruler. The measurements are accurate. When I measure the printed template with a ruler, it hit 15.3cm and it fit securely around the 1-1/2" PVC pipe. When you print it and measure it, what dimensions are you getting on that template?
