Finally… someone who does it right! :) I’ve seen so many people (including contractors) make the mistake of placing the diagonal brace starting from the top hinge location instead of the bottom… which has always resulted in a sagging door or gate.

I have seen that mistake also many times. I have built five of these doors over the past few years and they remain really solid.

Kinda complicated geometry, done accurately without a bunch of math. I like it! 👍

Thanks. If I can build a template for a future cut as I build, I am for it.

Only thing I'd add is the center bolt on each hinge be something other than a lag bolt for security purposes because someone could just unscrew the bolts & they're in. Other than that excellent video & tips, thumbs up.

Great point. I once installed some custom wood doors for a commercial client and he wanted bolts hinged on the outside and I warned him about the easy access to unscrew the bolts and someone is in. He did not care.

@@HowToBuildYourOwnHome I just rebuilt a shed for the neighbor , re-sided the whole thing & rebuilt the door entirely. I used some of your tips to make it strong & short work of it. This vid really helped out. Thanks

Thanks for the video. Been trying to design a set of doors for my shop/stained glass studio that has a 10' x 9' opening. This should work great.

Keith, I am very grateful to you for this video, and the prior one, ‘#9 Build your own garage door and save money’. It would be helpful to know where we can find these hinges, and a massive latch that accepts a padlock for the door, I have never seen them even at the local farm stores, that look that sturdy, or possibly brand names of the hardware, as this is something I need to do at my little place.

Glad to help. Those hinges I found at Home Depot. Bottom shelf area. Look for the weight rating. these were rated at about 80 LBS for each hinge, so I used four of them. Found the latch at the same place, although many ACE Hardware stores have a good selection as well.

Thanks for this. I had this idea but wanted to see it play out. My opening is 10x10 and will have two doors. Hoping a 5x10 door isn't too much. I added a double king stud along with the double jack stud when framing on the off chance I had to do this. Hope this provides enough support.

I'm not seeing how mice will be prevented from entering the shed by squeezing under the door (they only need about 1/4"). This could be solved by having the door overlap the top of the floor and having the door shut tight to close off access. Having stops around the sides and top like you do probably stops mice entry there. But it looks to me like the bottom of the door could be a mouse entry point.

Great Video. I want to open up my shop but prefer the look of 2 doors. Really like your design have you ever build 2 side by side, wondering how to deal with the gap in the middle. Also have to finish with hardy plank to match the rest of the house. Thanks

So what size is the opening. It’s hard to tell and didn’t hear him mention it. If that’s a 10’ wide opening. Would it be better to build two 5’ wide double doors instead.

is there a better option other than installing the hinges outside? I find it useless, if a thief wants to brake in quietly all he has to do is unscrew the hinges.
@HowToBuildYourOwnHome
@HowToBuildYourOwnHome 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if a thief is that smart. There are hinges now that cannot be tampered with. These are like them. I always like to bury the hinge with trim, one way to hide the obvious.
