Have you had any problem with rain getting under the doors since there is a gap? Or did you add any type of threshold or weatherstripping?
@AmplifyDIY4 жыл бұрын
No, I have not had any problem with water ingress at the lower gap of the doors. The overhang above helps a lot, and we don't have much driven rain here (i.e., rain that falls diagonally). However, if you live in an area that gets heavy rain or windy rain, then adding a door sweep (as well as a slight taper to the floor at the door thresholds if you are doing a concrete slab) is a good idea.

@AmplifyDIY4 жыл бұрын
Hi Devin. Good observation! Due to the design of my door frames with the trim overlapping the inner portion of the door frame, it would not have been possible to hang these hinges on the interior of the joint rather than the exterior of the joint. I did consider this during the design stages of this project, and ultimately decided that a) removing the doors from their hinges will be difficult because of how heavy they are (not impossible, sure, but easily a 2-person job) and b) I'm not storing any real high-value items in this shed. It's full of holiday decorations, camping gear, and lawn tools. Plus, I actually like the look of the hinges on the exterior. But your point is a great one: if you need higher security than I did, definitely re-think the door and jamb design to accommodate mounting hinges on the interior rather than exterior. Thanks for watching!

Oh my Gosh! You weren't kidding about having patience! I had to redo this doors 3 times because I just kept making it a tad too wide or way too thin. This is my first time attacking anything like this so its definitely learning lessons along the way. I learned to measure the top and bottom of the door frame because there was a difference of 3/4". Also need to learn how to make the doors square in the end. So I'm on the last leg of putting siding on so I hope to show you pics soon!

Fantastic! So glad to hear you are cranking through it! Doors are definitely one of the most frustrating things to build: as you've discovered, door frames are rarely square, stuff is usually wonky dimensions, and no matter how carefully you measure, things still have a tendency to come out juuuusst a little off. Nice work keeping at it, though! I can't wait to see the results!

Use threaded pipe couplings to connect sections of pipe to extend the length of pipe clamps. A collection of 2 ft, 4 ft, and 10 ft by 3/4" diameter pipes with threaded couplings on one end give all sorts of length possibilities. I used 14 ft of pipe to hold square the 12 ft by 80 in side walls of my shed while I attached the siding.

Great tip, Philip!
@dylan1237065 жыл бұрын
Nice work! a couple pointers though.. Why is one exterior door finished with the panelling similar to the siding while the other door is just smooth finished? Also, those diagonal braces you installed are most functional if installed diagonally from bottom to top with the bottom side being the side close to the hinge. This prevents sagging well. Installing a diagonal brace from hinge corner at the top does not work nearly as well to hold up the weight of the door.
@AmplifyDIY5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean about the different finishes on the door - the exterior side of the doors (all 4 of them) are done with paneling/trim. The interior is smooth OSB (again, on all 4). Perhaps that was not clear in the video? As for the bracing: I agree, and if I ever build doors like these again I'll brace them internally that way. Thanks for watching!

Nice video. I’m in the process of replacing my shed doors. The original ones, (not my build) the PO’ are rotting out from the bottom up. In my previous sheds, I painted all the wood with primer 360 degrees. I believe this prolongs the life of the wood by adding a layer of water protection once the sealer around the trim begins to loose some flexibility and cracks or pulls away from to wood allowing water to leak in. I did appreciate your steps of frame first, then panels and finally then trim. I was approaching my replacement doors with panels first. I’m going to change that to frame first. Much cheaper if you get the measurements wrong! One thought to the doors overlap where they close and come together. Where you have your .25” overlap, use the panels natural end cut to be the overlap when coming together. That will keep the vertical lines in the panels all gapped consistently from,left to right. It’s a much more noticeable line gap if you used the same panels as the doors and had to match the doors to the shed siding’s vertical lines.
@AmplifyDIY2 жыл бұрын
Good tip on lining up the siding so the gaps and vertical lines consistent. Thanks for watching!
@danmckee2649 Жыл бұрын
Definitely doing mine like this. It will be nice with that overlap because you can put in a foam strip for a nice seal around the doors. That with some spray foam it'll be super nice to work in once I add an ac unit and run wiring out to it.

@mdeamicis4 жыл бұрын
Pretty good for not knowing how to do it. It's a lot easier to cut the sheet good to the size of the door. You are guaranteed one square corner and the rest is easy to get right. Then you screw thru the back into 1 inch thick trim boards that are on the front. you use the same trim on the wall and screw the hinges to the trim. To square the door you lay ot out on level ground and make the top flush and square with quarter inch gaps top and bottom, then screw 2x4s across a few inches from top to bottom to hold it square. Hang a 2x4 or whatever across the bottom of the opening with the top where you want the bottom of the door to sit. With hinges already on the door, screw it to the shed. Now you attach a trim board behind one side and you have that light gap you were worried about all covered. Much easier and much cheaper to build this way. You did an awesome job though.

That is a serious door.. Love it!! my favorite part--your son building it with you.. priceless!! Hi Colleen - thanks for the great feedback! Regarding hinges: yes, there are weight limits, and it's important to pay attention to them. The hinges I used in this video are pretty beefy - I believe they are rated for either 50 or 75 lbs each. I estimated the weight of each door to be somewhere between 75 and 100 lbs, so with 3 hinges I was well within the weight limits of the hinges. Thanks for watching!

This is a good point. Other folks have commented along the same lines, and it bears repeating: If you are going to store valuable stuff in your shed, go with hinges that can mount inside the door jamb rather than surface mount as I did in this video. I don't store any really valuable stuff in my shed, so if someone wants to mess with taking the hinges off and trying to move a door out of the way that weighs more than 100 lbs, they are welcome to my old lawnmower, sleeping bags, and holiday decorations. I've got to make some new shed doors this summer. Think I will go with half laps at the corners of the doors. You would be surprised how easy they are to do! And very strong. Nice build! I think that you could have also saved some weight by using 1X4 instead of 2X4 for the basic frame. Has the weight of the doors been a problem at all for you or do you see an advantage to the 2X4 frame? Thanks for your reply!
@AmplifyDIY4 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry! The only time the weight has been an issue was during the install. I had to have my son help me carry them from the garage to the shed, and help with the install. You are right, these doors are heavy! But they are very strong, and don’t blow open or closed easily in a breeze. Going with 1x4 for the frame would likely save some weight, but the inner and outer skins are heavier than the inner frame by a long ways. I wanted these doors to be as strong as possible and not prone to warping, so I went with 2x4’s. Good luck with yours!

Great job on the doors! I'm in the middle of residing a shed in my backyard with Hardieboard and I'm gonna have to replace the two wood doors at the front of it. Was going to install roll up doors, but they are wayyyyyy too expensive. Will follow the tips in your video :)

Hey, Heath! I hope it all goes well for you. My doors have held up perfectly, and I love having options to open one, both, or at both ends of the shed. Good luck!

These are great doors, very heavy to be sure, beautiful shed, really a shame to call it a shed. I would call this an out building or storage building, it’s that nice. I have to make new doors on my high wall “barn” shed to replace the metal skinned standard doors. I have a few questions; 1. Did you consider making 1/2x1/2 lap joints for the 4 corners of the frames using pocket holes into the sides of the frame as opposed to the end caps? 2. Did you consider using cedar 2x4 over pine 2x4? (Cedar cuts down on the weight is why I’m asking), 3. I might have missed it, but did you add or have a “drip” trim header over the top of the doorways to prevent rain or moisture working its way between the trim and door panels? (I have one now, not sure if it is worth having one over the new doors), 4. Did you use any type of weather striping at the bottom and around the doors? (You have concrete flooring [nice] my shed is elevated and has 3/4” pressure treated plywood flooring, and we have little critters in the country that like to make their homes in warm sheds during the cold winters, so I need something to keep these little guys from coming in), 5. What was the thickness of the inner door panels? (I missed it, I think). Thoughts? Again, really beautiful out building.

Hi Duane - great questions! 1) I didn't put a ton of thought into the specific joint construction. I'm sure lap joints would work just great. 2) In retrospect, probably cedar would have been a little better choice - not only because it is lighter, but also because it resists rot. 3) I did add a drip edge under the window, which is directly above the doors. I have not had any issues with moisture anywhere in this shed (er, outbuilding :-) but I'll keep my eye on it. If I do see any signs of water getting into the doors, I'll add another drip edge to the top of the upper door jamb. 4) I did not add any weather stripping around the doors or under them. I don't have much of a problem with critters anywhere in my yard or house, but again I'll keep my eye on it and add stripping / door sweeps as needed. 5) The inner door panels are 1/2" (er, 9/16"? 17/32" Whatever the closest common measurement is that is sold at big box stores) OSB. Strong, cheap, and readily available. Thanks for the questions - I'm happy to answer any others you may have. Good luck with your doors!

Finally finished binge watching your episodes of making the shed from scratch! Take a bow in explaining everything in detail. Any ball park figure as to how much did the materials cost?

It's about adding time as a deterrent. Still, if you fill the screw heads with jb weld, it will take so long to remove them that it'll be less time just to use a crow and mini sledge to pry the door open.

Hi there! My shed is 8'x16', and I documented the entire construction in great detail. Here is a playlist with all the videos: kzbin.info/aero/PLYix1RK1u5Bn4w3XYbKwy4wPgo5vtDvfr As for plans, I bought some inexpensive plans from a popular website and modified them slightly for my build. There are LOTS more details on the individual videos of each phase of the build in the playlist linked above. Feel free to reach back out with any other questions. Thanks for watching!

Good luck! Both Lowes and Home Depot in my area carry lumber and siding in sizes large enough to use my technique to build 9’ x 4’ doors. I’d love to hear how yours turn out!

Is there anything you need to do to waterproof the door opening? Seems like any water that enters the top would ruin the OSB if it got on the back side of the door.
@AmplifyDIY4 жыл бұрын
The roof overhang keeps the top of the doors out of direct rainfall, and I have not had any issues with even really heavy rain getting into the door gaps enough to get to the OSB. Having said that, if your setup is different, it’s a good idea to treat the OSB with a weather barrier. Something as simple as paint may be enough, or you may need to consider something like a deck drain or even plasti-dip if you have really intrusive water. Good luck!

@@AmplifyDIY thanks. My door is not on the gable end so it will have some overhang. It's also not on the normal wind side either. I was using LP SmartSide panels which are OSB on the back. Wasn't sure if I needed to protect the edges in some way. I guess I'll just give them several coats of paint. That's what they recommend for the bottom drip edge too. Thanks again.
