A great project to make with kids is a wooden tree swing. My son and I built a wood swing and hung it from a tree in our yard. I tried to make the seat of the swing a size that everyone can use from kids to adults. The rope was strong enough to hold up several hundred pounds. We made sure to pick a strong hardwood tree.
The type of wood can vary, but typically chose something at least 1" thick. Preferably something free that you have lying around your house. You might have to glue two pieces together to get the thickness you want.

A running bowline would synch tight but there’s nothing wrong with what you’ve got there.

I gave up on spare urethanes years ago. If I want something to last forever outside. EPOXY! It's pricey but one application. I exposure any wooden feet that will contact the ground. All wooden tools where they meet the metal tool, like a rake or shovel.

Great job. I’m going to build one for my grandson and I’ve got good ideas from you. As for the rope, what exactly is it called and how thick and long should it be? Thanks

How high was the branch you used? Also, how night off the ground did you do the seat? I am trying to decide on safety for kids as they grow...I want fun but hopefully something not too crazy for the teenagers. Yours look perfect. Thanks for all the tips

Not sure exactly. A guess for the branch might be 20 feet? For the seat, maybe 2 feet? I don't know, the seat seems a little low for me but good for my son, he doesn't have to jump up to get to it like some swings on the playground that are high up. The only thing is that you have to make sure the seat doesn't swing back and hit someone. It's a big heavy piece of wood that would give a good black eye if it hits someone.

Will the limb be able to grow larger with the rope tied to it so snug?

Ya they will probably grow around the rope, if it lasts that long.

What do you feel would be the weight limit? Thx!

I would think that the ropes would break before the 2 layers of plywood. My guess would be 350 pounds.

What kind of tape did you use?

I don't remember exactly. But anything should work. As one commenter pointed out below, if i had tied a better knot i wouldn't have had to mess around with all the tape and things.

Thanks for the idea. Ply for outside? This will not survive for your child's children.

Great video - but unless you bought marine grade plywood, the glue laminating the layers will fail pretty fast. Sorry. Better choices - the pine, or better - pressure treated (so water and bugs don't eat it) or redwood or other bug /rot register wood.

Yes, i agree. It separated a little. A solid, thick, board would have been better.

Wooden swing will hit u in the mouth when u least expect it. Prob why they don’t make wooden swing seats. Ask me how I know this 🙂.

Dude... I know that compared to other chemicals Polyurethane isn't super toxic, BUT, maybe you might want to start teaching your child about the danger of handling chemicals properly with the correct personal protective equipment (or at least recognize that capturing this less than stellar parenting moment and putting it on youtube for all to see is less than ideal). On a positive note, thanks for posting an informative video.
