I've met Perry, I've toured their facility. My cousin built some of their early equipment. I visited a house that they provided the Sips panels for including a curved roof system. I was shown the forms they used to make those curved panels. I live in the Black hIlls of South Dakota and a friend of mine is a builder that exclusively builds with SIPS from Extreme. He blower door tests his homes and they are extremely efficient.

The hybrid of ducting and minis is a really good compromise for using minis in regular houses. Most HVAC guys insist on putting a head in every room. Which necessitates line sets, wiring and also condensate drains for each which can and will cause leaks and trouble down the road. The biggest concern I see is interior air filtration. Most people will agree that a mini split's filtration is poor to none. I wonder if a MERV 13 filter right after the circulation fan wouldn't be the final thing to make this a perfect and affordable house heating and cooling system. Maybe also individual outside units for each head for redundancy/maintenance down the road.

I like the design for ex a barn/garage/workshop usage, but i would rather have a concrete/brick built home. But great that it can be built that fast, especially in areas where a tornado has been by.
@DRJoe100
@DRJoe100 3 ай бұрын
There’s some concrete dome builds that are the best for hurricanes (even on concrete stilts if it’s a flood zone) and tornadoes. Brick only is usually horrible in earthquakes. Concrete gets brittle after a big fire and is no longer habitable/structurally sound if there’s building code compliance in the area. I’ve seen videos where they did aircrete hollow walls later filled with foam to create a similar effect to sips, but aircrete has its own issues. Not sure if I’ve seen them do regular concrete walls then make a foam form that they could then add drywall. Concrete is extremely expensive and other potential issues. Now that they’ve finally figured out the formula to Roman concrete it would be interesting to see various styles of buildings done and stress tested for all types of natural disasters.
@dennisoestermann1880
@dennisoestermann1880 3 ай бұрын
@@DRJoe100 Well wood gets extremely "brittle" after a big fire :P At least concrete and bricks dont burn as fast as stick buildt and gives the residents a bigger chance of surviving a fire :P And depending on how you build with concrete, you can have a structure that will outlast a stick build. You will also have to consider termites and carpenterants, that weakens the wood, but not concrete and brick. And depending on where you build, concrete can be a cheaper build than stick. If yo do concrete on the inner wall, then rockwool and brick on the outside, you will have a very good insulated wall, both for hot and cold climates. And it will not catch on fire nearly as fast as a stick build. Even with treated wood.

What happpens 30 years from now if a whole panel or multiple panels are structurally compromised because of lack of maintenance? Can it be repaired, or replaced, or will the home have to be condemned? I’m just curious how something like that can be repaired.

The guy who premade the walls or the on-site crew?? And why do you say that? My first concerns would be: -toxic off gasing even if they used closed cell foam -roof craftsmanship and how they couldn’t prebuild the roof to be touching flush in the center.. seems like a big crack like that would be super inefficient and they’ll probably just foam it before finishing but still cringe -the electrical should probably be buried in a metal conduit so the homeowner or even dry walkers Dont screw into it but at the very minimum given a perfect layout of exactly where it is so they can reference it. Not sure what they do with plumbing since they didn’t cover it. -they should pour a small angled ledge around the perimeter of the concrete foundation to help prevent termites since it’s a big issue there. Seems like something people in low income housing are less likely to afford/know/maintain since it’s already an issue with normal housing and most not knowing to not have garden beds/dirt/grass up against your foundation. -there’s no garage , which is needed in a tornado/hurricane area but everywhere unless it’s a big metro area with quality safe public transportation.. but it’s get mid-lower income area tend to use them as storage and still park outside and the house has no curb appeal and they’re just doing the bare minimum to house people cheaper vs thinking of the future, etc

@@DRJoe100 Homeowners would have an easier time hitting electrical in a conventional stick framed house. How would a drywaller with 1/2" drywall and 1/2" OSB screw into the electrical with a 1 1/4" drywall screw? Metal conduit makes zero sense. A garage isn't necessary and only adds to the cost. Nice template. Now, imagine if the zoning laws were like old zoning laws that permitted row housing so that we could stop pretending land access is infinite. 4 houses is good, 5 would be better for that lot. And are these going to retail for LESS than what neighborhood or regional comps sell for?? Affordability means more than just building lower-cost housing. It means finding a way to build the same size house for less AND sell it for less ... literally depressing a local housing market because there's no version of this where your neighbor's house cost less but yours remains magically inflated in value. And THAT is the problem with expecting home ownership to be an investment: It always requires you to profit over the next person. And we wonder why there's a housing shortage, why "affordable" houses are some mystical idea.
