I want to do some experiments that involve testing the refraction of various solutions, so I needed a hollow acrylic prism. Rather than buy one I figured why not make one. This was made from a scrap of 1/16th acrylic and solvent welded with Dichloromethane. The plug was made from a standard hockey puck. The video at the end was of the prism filled with plain water but different liquids would produce different results.

That was neat! I love seeing stuff pop up like that - something I wouldn't think to do on my own, but find so fascinating!

That's rather lovely and it also helped me in how I could best cut acrylic for a project I've been thinking of! Not to mention I think I heard the dark side of the moon at the end... ;)

Dan The Maker Man it's easier when I have the garage door open so I can put the camera way off to the left side. :(

Hey what's that at 0:33? Is that a way to set the blade at an angle? Also, what's the yellow device at 0:37 called?

Dark Horse Woodworking if you have a TAP plastics where you live you get it there other wise you'll probably have to order it but it's not very expensive (some places regulate it's sale though)

How strong is the bond using Dichloromethane? I am think about making a new dust cover for an old pioneer turntable I have and using acrylic.Great job by the way.

Thanks! and the bond is great, its actually a true solvent weld and the standard for joining acrylic not just an adhesive, so its functionally one piece of acrylic afterwards. but your cuts have to be precise as it will not fill gaps. its sets firm in a couple minutes but for full strength i think it takes a few days to completely flash off the solvents and cure

Charlie Thompson awesome good luck with the project! FYI there is a technique to using the needle applicator too so that it doesn't drip everywhere make sure you practice it on a scrap first :)

Good stuff. But as a Minnesotan, I'm deeply offended by your sadistic destruction of a perfectly good hockey puck.
