In this video I build a quick and simple set of stabilizers for my kayak. Twenty minutes and I was ready to go!! I couldn't believe how much more stable they made my kayak. I have tipped over kayaks in the past, but with these stabilizers I now feel much more comfortable with carrying extra weight like knapsacks and/or my dog, Willow. Give them a try and I'm sure you'll be amazed as well!!
Safe kayaking and thanks for watching,
Chuck Porter - Everything Outdoors
** Complete listing of parts you will need to build the stabilizers:
4 - 90 degree 1" electrical conduit pipe elbows
3 Feet of 1.5" ABS Plumbing pipe
2 - 1.5" ABS Tees
4 - 1.5" 90 degree ABS elbows
4 - 1.5" ABS cleanout adapters
4 - 3/8"x2" Bolts with washers and lock nuts
2 - Snowmobile tow hitch pins
2 - Dock edge fenders (16"x4.5")
ABS standard cement/glue

The wider you go away from the body of the kayak the more stable it will get with the same size float too. So if you added a 1 foot length of pipe horizontal in between the two curved conduit pieces, youll find its even harder to tip. Leverage is key

I like the stabilizer build. Very simple but looks quite effective. I once sat in a Sit-a-top kayak. I quickly learned how unstable they are compared to the Sit-IN kayak I eventually went with, which is an Ascend AS-12. It's so stable that as long as you keep your arms and legs over the boat, you can lean to either side and it won't go any further than about 15-20 degrees and it stops. It's a lot like standing in a bucket and trying to lift yourself up by the handle. The main reason is that when you sit in this particular kayak, your butt is actually sitting below the waterline. So when you're leaning over and the boat won't allow you to lean any further, the boat is telling you that you can't do that, because you are actually trying to lift yourself out of the water. So, it's the most stable set-up you can have. "But"... I am going to build your stabilizer system for mine anyway, because every once in awhile, I'd like to stand up, so I can look around, stretch my legs or maybe get my lure a bit further away. Thanks for the video. The stabilizer build will really come in handy.

Nice job , I did something similiar using small boat fenders , Sitting just above water line , I operate 14 footers , motorized , heavy , , I tipped kayak few times , never in deep , always at boat ramp , feel myself falling grab yak I'm in water , kayak tipped over , This happened recently when I had outriggers installed and kayak stayed boyant . You gave me an idea using electrical piping , stronger then pcv , I fish at times under bridges and fenders bang into concrete , pcv snaps easily , I stopped gluing , using cotter pins this way when pcv snaps comes apart easily

That's neat. I am cultivating this new fishing hobby and I am looking for a fishing Kayak or smallest kayak so that it's easy to carry on my SUV's roof rack.. I was thinking of something similar , like tying up two kayaks for more stability and can support my dog too, but at the same time wanted to keep it as simple as possible. SO, I am thinking of tying some tubes to the side of the kayak. Has anyone done that ? And how well that can work ? Thank you, I subscribed.
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Tubes of any sort would definitely help. Of course, the further away from the kayak the better. The challenge is finding that balance between obstruction of paddling and movement, and stability. I’ve used these many times since and find them really good. Sure, it slows me down a bit, but if I’m just drifting around a pond doing some fishing, then stability outweighs the need for fast movements etc.

When you stood up to paddle for a bit on your feet ... that your usual paddle length seemed a bit short for the standing position. What if your were to figure a way to cut your paddle in two and add a length of pvc pipe into the middle of the paddle in a way that you could take our and put back in depending on if you wanted to paddle sitting down or standing up ... kind of like the long paddles that the ocean paddle boarders use while they're standing. Love the creativity of your new stabilizers !

love the design concept but i noticed how the pipe attached to the kayak was still very moveable may i suggest a possible future design add for keeping them stable so it make it more sturdy by adding a small support systm on the outside from the kayak to like the middle of the support joint for extra stability of the pipe so it doesnt wobble as much, but thank you for sharing this i was just looking for stabilizers for my kayak cause i have recently gotten into it thanks to a friend of mine

Great video and concept! An improvement comes to mind, bare with me, hopefully I can articulate what I am thinking. Have the float on each side each part way (half?) out of the water at 'stable'. That way when tipping too far to the right for example right side float will submerge more and therefore will add resistance to that direction and the left float coming out of the water therefore adding less resistance and therefore BOTH will help stability. Right now both are submerged and providing equal force upward and doing little by way of promoting stability. Another thing is the further you have said floats out from kayak the more stability you have exponentially. Obviously there is a size/portability factor and you don't want 20' floats on each side haha Hope you don't mind a little feedback. Would love to see you incorporate my first suggestion especially and see/compare the difference. Id bet it would be significant :)

Hey buddy. I experimented with these stabilizers in height only. I found that this height was the best for my weight etc. It really isn’t a huge difference in speed given I’m usually fishing most times anyhow. I didn’t experiment with the width, although, at the width I have here it works well enough I can stand up no problem 👍👍

Apologies if you've answered this, but what was the weight capacity of your kayak before you added the stabalizers? Thank you for the video, definitely doing this!

Great Mod. I own a pelican catch 120. Love it but weighs a ton. Hard to fine the perfect kayak. I guess we would need to own 5-6 for each scenario that we would want to paddle in. Adding the stabilizers certainly gives you more range. As always great vid. Would of been more entertaining if you went tits up in the water. Lol.

the 2 floats are in the water all the time... does that increase drag? do you notice? what if they were a couple of inches above the water, instead? .. after all the boats floats ok without them;
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
There isn't much "tipping room" thus if they were above the water it would be too late as it were before they provided the appropriate buoyancy to keep you upright. The drag is surprisingly low👍

Love the video but word of caution; I built a set almost identical to these and cracked/ripped the hull on my pelican pretty badly. One of them just barely caught a stump just under the water and ripped out of the hull where attached, and that sent a split down the hull that could not be repaired. Tight lines!

Instead of that bumper, you can use a soda bottle. Do you have to put more effort into paddling now? What, if the stabilizers were not submerged?
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors

I was pleasantly surprised with the speed at which I could still paddle with the stabilizers down. Of course, they are quickly removed with the pins if I were to want to cross a piece of water faster. It’s a win win and I’m after using them many many times since

do you think it would've been more stable if you had the bumpers out 8-10" more?
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Yes it would. However, your paddles would be striking them on every pass.

@Chuck Porter - Everything Outdoors well I got a 12ft yak, so I went with 26x8" pontoons, and they extend out just over 3 ft. Also, i have a trolling motor so im not too concerned about the paddlig. I'll let you know how it goes.

ABsolutely and thanks Barry. My gopro battery died afterwards when I got back to shore.... I played around enough that I tipped it over (in two feet of water of course). To my surprise it tipped back over easier than I thought. That may be just a fluke to my design. I guess in a survival situation though, the kayak (even though upside down) at least would have both the bouyancy of the kayak plus the stabilizers to help keep you afloat until you managed to get to shore or help arrived. Appreciate your take on this bud. Great observation👍
