Designing and building a roll-away nest box to protect our precious eggs from clever crows and to make it an easier and cleaner collection. That’s the theory anyway; let’s see if it works.

That looks fantastic. I wouldn’t bother with the dividers. Ours is a big open box and they have made one nest in there and all pile in on top of each other in the one spot. One problem you may run into being tin, in summer the box will heat up a lot. Chickens, I love them dearly, but they aren’t smart creatures, and their need to lay an egg outweighs their need to survive. We lost so many last summer inside the metal pen, even with a shade sail over it. Some still on the nest. Have a good retic system set up in the pen now, so they get fully sprayed down with sprinklers 6 times a day, so hopefully they won’t cook themselves this year.

Good call, we actually talked about that too. We have some insulation we could install in the nest box plus a shade sail over it. Then we’ll just have to monitor the temps in there. Wonder if we could rig up a sprinkler in there… that’s a great idea 👍👍

new here, congradulations on your new lifestyle...Not knowing your plans for a garden, pasture, woodlot..but I would suggest you look at a few different sites so you may get an idea on how to do it simple...KNF (Korean natural farming), the (DR"S) Johnson-Su bioreactor for great compost building and YRA (Young Red Angus) to learn how to apply compost as needed to build your lands soil (used in parts of Aus. already)...just a thought..

Looks like a neat set up. I've got to make something. I have a chicken eating the eggs. Not good. Thanks for sharing.

Put a couple of old golf balls or smooth rocks painted white in your nest box (that the chickens can see). My pop used to do that, he reckoned it encouraged them to lay. Or you can buy plastic eggs, but I prefer the recycling option.

hi, how's it going with the roll out? is the carpet tile collecting any residue, chicken poo or broken eggs? i'm trying to find a material that will keep eggs from not breaking when chicken lays egg and rolls out. please let me know. thank you!

Very neat. Now you have to glass the eggs for storage.
@ROCKPILEOffgridHomestead
@ROCKPILEOffgridHomestead Жыл бұрын
Definitely want to try that! And pickled eggs too… just need more than one bantam to start laying again. I think once they settle into the new coop and new routine the others will come back on the lay again have you glassed eggs before?
@threeriversforge1997

@@ROCKPILEOffgridHomestead I tried once. Forgot the part where you're not supposed to wash the eggs b/c that removes the protective layer. Total ugh! results.

It’s been patchy since… not sure why. Betty has started laying but just in the middle of the coop. we’re hoping once they settle into the new place and routine things will get more regular

@ROCKPILEOffgridHomestead

Are you in Aus? If so, from Bunnings its Rondo brand called ‘furring channel J track’ about $12 for 3 meters. You can also get it from CSR Gyprock stores.

The only thing I would do differently is I would leave the carpet so it could be removed so it could be hosed off but dang that is simple and looks good have you had any issues with heat or does the tin reflect the heat
@ROCKPILEOffgridHomestead
@ROCKPILEOffgridHomestead Жыл бұрын
We were ready with some inso and extra shade cloth in case it got too hot but it's positioned just right under the trees it doesn't often get direct sun. Being able to hose it out is a VERY good idea.
