In this video I will be installing the Synergy Reef System Shadow Overflow to my 100 gallon saltwater fish tank build. This is a 16" Shadow Overflow capable of handling 1,500 gallons of water per hour. The saltwater aquarium overflow is used to flow water down into the aquarium filtration, typically housed in the aquarium sump. The overflow has three drains for the Bean Overflow, with one primary drain using a gate valve for a full siphon and two emergency drains. You can also run the Herbie Method overflow, by simply capping off one of the three drains. The drains start of as 1.5" drains, which I reduced down to 1".

Looks great One observation that I will like to mention inside the overflow box is just the lock nuts and no gasket I definitely recommend to put another gasket in there better be safe than sorry. Is getting there , where you want it, with patience and powerful will Is closer to the end ReeferGil

Hey Cuban, there are gaskets on the locking nut, but it's on the opposite side of the external box against the glass. Additionally there are a set of gaskets inside the tank. It should seal from inside and outside of the 1.5" holes in the glass. Once my sump gets here, I'll finally be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, lol. This is a baby step project, didn't intend it to be this way but at the same time I have more time to do detailed videos of the baby steps I'm taking.

Thanks. Great video. Two questions: 1) just saw a video by the manufacturer and they were very insistent that you do not use primer when attaching the first length of PVC. Something about being incompatible with ABS. Your thoughts? 2) the same video recommended that the initial length of PVC be between 4 and 10 inches. Do you have any insight as to why this is the recommendation? And are there any considerations re using the short or long length recommendations?

Great point, I never did mention which PVC cutters I was using. I purchased the Brass Craft cutters from Orchard Supplies. I think most big box or Amazon will have them. I purchased the larger ones for about $30. WELL worth it! Thanks for the post!

Just curious, as I'm going to be using the same overflow - when you ordered the tank, did you have a chat with them about where the water level would be, and how did they determine that? I know the overflow comes with a template with some marks on it to help guide where the water level will be, but did they use that?

Reef Eco Crystal Dynamics built and drilled the holes. I'm sure they have a template because the template I have was a perfect match with the predrilled holes.

I am planning my dream reef tank build and currently considering this overflow, but I have read some bad reviews about quality and that it is noisy. What is your take on this product? I really do like this overflow. It's not loud at all, in fact it's silent. You just have to use gate valves to make fine adjustments to the main overflow drain. Don't use shut off valves as a cheaper alternate. Thanks for the post and comments too!

They are one of the top rated overflow boxes out right now? Not to mention the build Construction/quality is top notch. Im running a eshopps eclipse L on my 40g its good to, but im definitely upgrading to the shadow on my next build.
