I have to say I have always considered myself a very high end Industrial mechanic. Just found this channel. You know, you'd probably be the guy on the job site that I would avoid because our personalities tend to not get along. But I would regret it in the long run! Great advice and much more relatable then some of the other woodworking channels where they have fifty grand in equipment and a giant shop in portland. For the builder/creator/weekend warrior, this is perfect! And your always on personality keeps me paying attention...no artsy glue up montage or staged photo shoot lol

Paul, thanks for a great instructional video. With the price of lumber today I was thinking of using construction lumber for my door project but had a number of concerns, e.g., shrinkage and expansion. You answered that question. I was also surprised to see you use a small jointer on the 8' stock. Good job. I am planning my doors to use T&G stock instead of plywood for a more farmhouse look. I am writing this comment to you on 3/28/2022, and lumber is about double what you paid back in better days. In any event I appreciate your time and instructions. You can’t use framing timber to make doors 😂they will warp as it’s usually 12% moisture . Maybe for a cubby house . Better to use Klein dried furniture grade hardwood .

If you take the red plug on the glue bot and attach it to the center nipple of the larger filler lid it will not be dangling in your way all the time.

I was thinking about building a solid front door. They are a $1000 if you buy it at Lowe’s or Home Depot. I can design it how I want that way. It may be a bit ambitious but one day I will do it.

@Paul Ricalde - thanks for another video! Been watching your channel since my wife and I purchased an older house and I've learned a ton from you. Quick question about the saw; are you using that Dewalt Jobsite Contractor saw? I'm needing to buy a table saw that can make dado cuts because I'd like to start updating our cabinet doors and closet doors with shaker panels. Lots of people I've talked with say you need like a Hybrid or Cabinet saw ($1,000+) to do those cuts. Yours seems to handle it like a champ and do everything I would want to do.

I have a Hitachi dedicated for my Dado blade because I could'nt pass up the deal but my Dewalt is my go to saw, it is definitely the best portable saw I have ever used. I put a lot of lumber through it and it's not only tuff but accurate. I personally do not own a stationary table saw because I don't have enough room for it but so far I really don't need any other table saw. They usually go on sale around Christmas time. I would suggest going to www.slickdeals.com and add it as a search deal. I picked up my Hitachi for 279.00 last Christmas, I like it but not nearly as much as my Dewalt. Thanks!

Brian Binns my assumption would be that because he used plywood for the panel no need to let float because it will not expand and contract like a solid wood panel would

Good morning Brian, Bankhead is right. Plywood is made with layers that are pressed and glued in opposite directions so it won’t shrink. If the center panel were made from solid wood it would expand and contract causing it to warp. That’s a good question buddy. Thanks!

I guess the plywood is stable enough that you don't have to leave it free floating like you would a drawer bottom?

That’s a good question, I was in the cabinet business for many years. Some people tack or glue the plywood bottom and some don’t. Factory drawers are usually made with dovetail construction, they remain square once glued and assembled. The bottom can float because it is not needed to keep the sides square. Some people glue or nail the plywood bottom in place in order to keep the drawer from racking. I hope this helps. Thanks!

That's Ok Bob, everybody has their own taste and any hardware can be used on them. I made these doors to be Barn style and I will give them a distressed look but due to the shaker stly design, you could simply paint them and add contemporary hardware. I tried to make them versitile so I could change them if I decide to. Thanks for the compliment on the doors, I really appreciate that! Paul

Haven’t read all the comments but you just showed the KZbin community a very dangerous thing to do on a table saw. When you are using the cross cut miter and the fence at the same time it’s a perfect recipe for a violent kick back. To do this safely you need to use a stand-off block on the fence. When the wood hits the blade it should only be supported by the fence or the miter but never both. If you were using a stand-off then great but I didn’t see it. Trust me no one is strong enough to hold that wood down when it starts to pinch. It can break your ribs very easily during a kickback. Stay safe KZbin wood workers. There are a few videos of kick backs caused by this very issue. Even one guy demonstrated it and almost cut his hand very badly. Find these vids and watch. I really like mine but it's been discontinued by Porter Cable. A friend bought a Cutech and he likes it, I also looked at the ratings on Amazon and they seem to be very good. Here is a link but you may find a Porter cable on sale at Lowes if they still have any in stock. @@paulstoolbox I'm not understanding how the porter cable or the cutech is a planer/jointer. Both machines look like jointers and the descriptions say they are jointers. I have a hammer J/P and the jointer beds flip open to go into planer mode. Confused? Maybe its just a terminology issue. Love your videos.

Hi Mark, that's a good question. Some companies call it Joiner and some call it Planer/Joiner. I said 6" planer joiner because it will plane a board up to 6" wide. They also sell hand planers that basically do the same thing but with a smaller cutting blade and used by hand rather than table. Craig's list, Facebook market place. You can do some great work with inexpensive used tools and builder grade (crappy) lumber from the HD. (And don't buy fancy finished wood from there..holy $$$ find a real lumber dealer in your area). Just be warned.. You start down this path and you will never come back from it...

Yes, I would say that's your son. Instead of putting barn doors in that house, why not just paint them white to match existing architecture, there is nothing "rustic" about that house. In 10 years they will be ripping those dated Joanna Gaines doors out. I like barn doors idea, but now that EVERYBODY has them (or wants them), I would not want them. Time to put this way overused trend to bed. Pocket doors do the same thing btw.

rockshot100 sorry but I disagree, but that’s a matter of taste and I respect yours. This is my own home and I like the look. I have changed the paint numerous times because it brings new life to a home. This is why people remodel. I’m fortunate enough to know how to do it myself, it saves me money and makes my wife happy. My old closet doors were ugly sliding glass doors that I hated, I built these for under 35.00 each and I can easily make them look modern if I decide to. Thanks!

@@paulstoolbox Fair enough. But you will have to admit that those "old ugly sliding glass doors" were all the rage and everybody had them at one time. Then again you like to remodel. When I decorate or remodel I ALWAYS ask myself, "is this trendy?" And "What will this look like in ten years". Madly trying to avoid trends, just because I really don't like to remodel. For one, I don't have the skill and tools that you do or the money. I will say that I do appreciate people like you. I got almost new appliances because the people that had them wanted all stainless steel. Perfectly good stuff, but "white" and a fraction of the cost. I don't mind white, especially for top quality stuff. I know enough to add color and interest in some other way. There is a universally accepted design principle or rule that says to "design within context". An example would be a new england neighborhood with one house that is stucco and painted bright pink. That would be "ugly" only because it is out of context. So a lot of design is not just a matter of taste. Great channel, and I like to see the "right way" of doing this stuff. Thanks.

Thanks Rockshot100, I really appreciate your input, you make a good point. I struggled for many years, I do ok now but not rich enough to change appliances because of a new trend lol. I still have the same dryer that we bought when we moved into this home 19 years ago. I fixed it 3 times and it still works. I hated this bathroom from day one but didn’t have the money to remodel. It cost me $10,000.00 and I did 95% of the work myself. I will do a post on the entire remodel when I’m done. I think you’ll be surprised that the decor flows. Who knows, you may even like it.
