An outdoor sink is one of the best yard tools you can have, and it's easy to build, using the shopping list we've provided at www.dirtfarmerjay.com/article....
#sinks #outdoorsink #yardsink #laundrysink
Perhaps you’ve been meaning to build one and haven’t gotten to it. Well, let’s change that! This is the year and the time to get going to enjoy this great addition to your yardscape.
Our only regret in building this is that we didn’t do it sooner! It’s great for washing produce we’ve just harvested from the garden, cleaning items from the shop, a quick drink of water, a refreshing splash on a hot day, or just cleaning up a bit before going into the house.
You can download the parts list, or print out a pdf, for two versions of this hardworking outdoor sink at www.dirtfarmerjay.com/article.... Heck, you can even order parts using the supplied links. The list will show you the prices in place at the time of filming, but due to inflation, prices will likely be different, Even so, enjoy!
Watch for a future episode when we build a small metal building around the sink to greater increase its utility.
If you haven’t seen the second video where we gave an update on improving the drain, as well as how to shut off one side of the faucet and save a bit of money, you can see that video here: • An Even BETTER Outdoor... .
Don't you just love being able to JUST DO IT YOURSELF? And, thanks for being a part of the DirtFarmerJay Viewer Family!

Gee thanks Ian Knox! We use our sink from Spring to Fall. Can't imagine doing all the outside work without a convenient place to wash up and get a drink of cool well water on a hot day. DFJ

This is fantastic! My parents are avid gardeners and should build one of these, I've shared your video with them! I came across this video because I'll be building my son a "mud kitchen" this spring and think it would be great for him to have running water :) Great video, and thank you for the shopping list!

DFJ - The shopping list is the best! I made a couple of changes so I could use parts on hand. Installed an 18" X 24" poly sink, built a small paver base to keep it level. Anchored to pavers with 3/16" x 1- 1/4" Tapcons and SS washers . Bought a 1 -1/4" corrugated sump pump discharge hose-small but sturdy, works great. It's also called "pond tubing" . I have a piece of solid concrete block (as you suggested in another video) for ballast. Nice as an inside shelf . The poly sinks are weatherproof , plenty deep and not $$.

put mine together today. Thank you!!!!!! helps so much when I need to wash pool equip and garden tools, don't have to bend over or squat. I put it on top of a concrete paver to give me a couple of more inches of height.

My 'Garden Hose Sink' lasted about 20 years inside my shop. I also replaced the single hose on my washer and the 'flushing tube' because of age and minor leaking cracks from over the years of use that just recently developed as I found my floor with a bit of water to the rear of the shop that I 'shop vac'd' out after turning the water off. It's good if you catch it as a slow weeping drip instead of a hose burst. I love the new red and blue high pressure 'washer' nylon hoses. IF you use a WASHER for shop rags, and you have no hot water, just take a brass female blocker/stopper and screw it on the Hot side of the rear of the washer. I have a buried PVC water line coming in to my shop in the backyard with a faucet on the outside and inside, a male end and a splitter on that end for one hose to my washer for shop rags and one to the sink in which I use the 'washer splitter hose' attached to both knobs on the faucet for using both for more water. In the past I made a male on male adapter to attach in between the brass faucet adapter and the hose. This time I when to my local hardware AFTER I couldn't get brass fitting to seal very well on my new faucet, to buy the two part MALE and FEMALE that you bond together using PVC cement. This sealed very nicely and allowed my Y-hose to attach right up, eliminating my male/male pvc adapters making for 2 less places to leak. Very clean job and I couldn't be happier. With the headaches I had with leaky brass fittings, I will use PVC fittings and nylon tape wrap as often as need-be from now on! BTW, the 'SHARK BITE®' fittings are a Godsend for any application, even my new hot water heater in my house!! BTW, keep Dawn® Dish-soap near your sink. I use approximately 7 ounces of BLUE dawn in a spray bottle filled the rest of the way with water. When I work outside in the hedge or on my personal mechanics work, I spray my hands a few squirts and wash and rinse. I've not gotten a poison Ivy rash since using Dawn® and being careful, but if I feel the plant touched me, it's off to the wash station. .

The sun will, or may, eat the sink. Depending on the quality of the sink, and where you put it, UV will damage it and it may not last more than 3 to 5 years before it starts to crack & disintegrate, most plastics do not do so well with UV exposure. I placed one on a southern exposure about 4 years ago and after a few years, it started to show signs of UV damage and cracking/brittleness. I'm in a northern location with 4-5 feet of snow in the winter so I store the sink in the wintertime, it's outside from May to November and the sun is doing quite a number on it. I have no other place to put it except on a southern wall and the sink will not last much longer, this is probably its last year. I will be replacing it with a 20"x20" x12" commercial stainless sink ($200-$300) ...expensive but paying for a plastic laundry tub every 5 years will be more expensive in the long run. If you install a plastic one install it in a shaded area if you can, daylong southern sun exposure will damage the sink in a rather short time.

Do you just keep your outdoor faucet (where hose connects to house) on all the time for this sink to work?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 2 жыл бұрын
We leave it on if we are harvesting veggies or doing something where we will be using the sink consistently for a period of time. Otherwise, it's off until we need to use it. Best to you, Dirt Farmer Maggie

I really like the concept of the sink, but I live in the desert and we have some extreme heat in the summer. I am just wondering how it would hold in such high temperatures?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. We are both Arizona natives who moved to the Mountain West 20 years ago. (it gets 100 degrees plus here but just for a few hours in the peak of the day). So we understand the extreme heat. It gets hot in the summer here too and we've not replaced our sink since it was first built. I would recommend placing it in a shady area if possible just to give it a break from the direct sun. Best to you, Dirt Farmer Maggie

The 1 1/2" diameter slip joint extension tube is not fitting, what am I doing wrong?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 11 ай бұрын
Give me a bit more. Is it too big or small? Is the washer inside the nut not gripping the extension tube coming down from the drain? This type drains also come in 1-1/4" and 1-1/2". Best, DFJ

Setting up outside sink, but I Just want to know do you turn the water supply off when not in use? Thank you
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting HAZEL REESE. To answer your question, the answer is yes and no. During the hot months when we are harvesting veggies we leave it on all the time. But as soon as we stop working outside/crops are finished, we turn it off and store it in the tractor barn over the winter. DFJ

I'm doing this as we speak but how do you hook up hot water outside
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 2 жыл бұрын
Darrin, sorry to not respond faster. We only use cold water on our unit, but it's possible to either connect a protected small electric water heater to the faucet, or to use a solar heating loop to provide hot water. But in doing so, since it's outside, if there is a risk of heavy frost or freeze, these types of heating systems need to be drained when the freeze hits. At our place, where it gets below freezing regularly in the winter, we disconnect the outdoor faucet and drain it to avoid freeze damage. I hope that helps! Best, DFJ

Have everything and am stuck on how to hook up the drain...it shop hose that was listed is much larger diameter than the drain
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 3 жыл бұрын
Tina Marie. Did you put the tail peice on the drain outlet? It sticks out with threads on it. When you put the tail piece on, you can just slip the vacuum hose on it (with a loose fit) and then direct the hose to where you want the draining water to go. If the vacuum hose keeps falling off, use a hose clamp to secure it. Hope this helps.
