Building from the back is an increasingly discussed topic in football. Some believe it's the most efficient way of creating chances for the strikers, while others believe that it just increases the risk of losing possession close to your own goal. Needless to say, it's becoming an increasingly more popular choice in top level teams, as more and more ball playing centrebacks and goalkeepers are being sought after by top teams. In todays video, we're going to be taking a look at why buildup play is on the rise, and why it's one of the best ways of creating chances further up the pitch.

@@FootballMeta You just bagged yourself a new subscriber. Keep up the good work! I don't like playing out from the back personally. It's an unnecessary approach and majority of goals don't come from playing out from the back. Most goals come from either set pieces or in transition. Playing out from the back is only useful for manipulating the ball and preying upon the desperation of the opposition team who really needs a goal. My build up play is pinning the ball to the wing. In that way, you decrease your chances of losing the ball in the middle zone. If you don't win the ball, you have time to be back in shape or you concede throw ins to your opposition. If you win the ball, you have the chance to initiate attacks.

I'm so glad that Ricardo LaVolpe is getting the credit he deserves. He did this with the Mexican national team during his tenure and did it at times with his back 3. Pep did go talk to LaVolpe during the 2005 Confederations Cup and let's not forget that Pep did play in Mexico with Dorados and got his first taste of coaching because Lillo (his current assistant at City) was the coach at Sinaloa and let him coach during games, sort of as an assistant. Pep later took it on and then it got into the mainstream.

Nice to see you cover Spalletti, his Napoli is super fun to watch so far this season. He's really improved upon the build-up play that Gattuso laid the foundations for last season. Now they also have a great long ball option with the speed and flick on abilities of Osimhen, so oppositions that commit too much to press their build up are often caught out.

Absolutely fantastic. Fullbacks don’t get a lot of explanation and midfield discipline to not crowd the sideline is so important. Younger players on teams with uneven talent or with sometimes unique players who wander can use this to understand how important team buildup requires discipline and trust.

As a right back myself i do quite like playing out from the back as if we get it right it realises a lot of pressure and allows a quick counter however there is also a high chance of the opposition winnning the ball back but mid say its worth the risk

Dean Smith has adopted a 3-5-2 with Aston Villa since their first match against Chelsea this season with great success. Although he has more of a Dutch “Total Football” philosophy where strikers Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins will track all the way back to our own box, and the fullbacks will invert into the attacking role in transition. Much better (and entertaining!) than the cookie-cutter 4-2-3-1.

I would suggest you to make videos regularly and if you can start football basics series in which you explain the very basics of football related to technical and tactical stuff, your channel will grow more fastly, because there's no as such channel on KZbin which have basics kinda series and who explain and present football stuff in a very easy manner. Solskjaer's man utd do something similar as spaletti. But he drops both fred and mctominay in the half space while Luke shaw and wan bissaka try and go up. Or if the play is congested on one side, the ball near CM drops in that half space while the other pins opposition midfielders centrally.

The better option is definitely playing out from the back, if you have the players to do it, while recognising it will cost you the occasional goal and make you look foolish sometimes. Obviously, that has to be weighed against the benefits of the tactic. I'm a season ticket holder at Hull City in England, and it's debatable whether we have players of enough quality to regularly play out, but I'd rather give it a go, partly because it annoys the dinosaurs around me who constantly bellow: "Get it forward." Yes, let's just lump it aimlessly forward … That's the very opposite of 'the beautiful game'.

Many Euro teams built from the back as far as 1970s. It's just nobody made a big deal out of it and very few really pressed high so it didnt become big criticial point in game. But one team Ajax really high pressed teams that built from the back. You can see it in game between Bayern and Ajax in 1973 when Bayern tried to play put from the back while Ajax pressed them high. At times it did look as if modern day teams playing.

I think whether build-up is better than long-ball depends on the experience and skill level of the players. If you have a more inexperienced team then build-up can invite more easy goals. If you have a more experienced team then build-up can increase your retention stats.

Great vid, insightful and informative as always! However I feel that on the whole you didn't really answer the question you set out with. Why is it the best tactic as opposed to alternatives like going long and counter attacking? Would be interested to see a further discussion of this.
@FootballMeta
@FootballMeta 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, looking back on the video I think you're right and it's not too obvious what I'm trying to say, but essentially I think the main reasoning behind why it's better than going long is because it allows you to have more control over the outcome of what happens. Football is by nature a pretty chaotic sport, difficult to plan specific plays like you can in sports like basketball or American football. And I think building from the back is football's best answer to this, cause each kick can start exactly how you want it to. Thats not to say going long is bad, a lot of teams still dominate with this tactic, but you're relying on certain interactions going your way
@nighteyes_nl2288
@nighteyes_nl2288 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I thought about this question a lot for my virtual teams. I believe using a mix of tactics like build-up play, counter attack, etc is probably best and deciding which tactic to use at which time in a match is key. But if you can't play out from the back properly you will have problems winning matches consistently and you've explained why: it just gives you more control over the occurence of chances.

Do most managers look to keep their pressing systems simple or will they tweak them game-to-game based on the opponent? Also, what level of detail is involved? In other words, is it just a matter of countering an opposing team's style by adjusting pressing height and intensity or will a coaching staff try to tailor a more complex plan?

Okay I know this isn't exactly why you started the Channel but I play fifa ultimate team and your Channel really helped me create very tricky tactics for my opponents. But I have a little problem with one tactic. I play a 433 and I use my 2 wingers to pin opponent's left back and right back. When I start the build up my cdm and my right center mid drift wide. My right back join the Attack and my left back play as Inverted and join the Center backs. The problem is when I get countered it is so hard to defend. I tried to Press after possession loss "Guardiola style". It is better but the threat is still there...
