Shoutout to channel member Tim who was working on this today, and all of you who ask about this. Classic drum intro originally played by Mick Tucker. Here's a suggested order for building this up!

Thanks Mike. Mick Tucker was my inspiration and this beat seemingly has as many theories/transcripts/covers as there are drummers 🙂 Saw Mick play it live quite a few times and it was that indefinable magical 'swing' he added to the entire sequence which throws a lot of people. I have my own theory too but yours is certainly as good an explanation as I've seen. Cheers from Australia.

It's the vocals that made this song such a huge hit just before I started playing. When I started in 1975 everybody knew it. The number of times people looked over at me and asked, "You ready, Steve?" made me hate this song for years. Now it's a source of many fond memories, but I quite simply loathed it for several years. For those who like the "train" beat, look up "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by Charlie Daniels.

@@MikeBarnesDrums Thanks, Mike. There's a lot of recovery since the stroke, but drumming days are behind me. Life is good, though. 2 new granddaughters certainly put things into perspective.

Not a criticism, you mentioned you were unsure if Mick was footing the hi-hat on the original, in fact he plays the same thing on both bass drums at once! I play it that way myself and it really thunders! Doesn’t work on a double pedal of course because they basically cancel out. Also as a leftie, Mick plays left stick lead on the snare part which is why there’s no ghost note after the opening crash on the record: he plays his right crash with his right hand, and then the accent of the snare with his left, leaving no third hand to play the unaccented note. Great tutorial, wish more people referenced Mick’s drumming 👍

Thanks for watching! Yes, I reference the two bass drums and the no hi-hat with the foot at 1:19. Very cool playing it that way if you have two bass drums available! As I say, I think the hi-hat foot part presented here works well if, like most of us, you don't have two bass drums on your kit. But drummers can use/discard that as they see fit. And yes, I'm aware that Mick Tucker lead with the left, see the discussion with @VitDrums below. To repeat what I said there, left-handed drummers (or anyone who wants to) should of course feel free to reverse the sticking shown (as with any of these vids). I don't personally think it's necessary for right-handers to do that to get an authentic feel going, and I do feel it could well add confusion to the learning of this part for some drummers first getting into it, based on my teaching experience - hence I didn't get into that in the vid. Cheers and thanks for the in-depth insight!

Thank you for the cool reel layouts! But you were wrong. Tucker plays all the accents on the small with the left hand) Look at the video you can see everything)

Thanks for watching and paying attention! I think I'm right in saying Mick Tucker was left-handed, hence the fact he'd be leading with his left (and therefore playing the accents with the left). The sticking I'm showing is for the majority of us right handed drummers (as I say at 2:20). And it certainly flows better for the majority of right-handed learner drummers, in my experience. Feel free to reverse the sticking like MT if you're left-handed/if you want to. Bruce Bisland, who is right-handed (or so it appears), has been playing with Andy Scott's Sweet since 1991 and uses the "right handed" sticking I'm showing here. Cheers!

Mick Tucker was not left-handed. You should probably know this well! Try playing like him with your left hand and you'll hear a Tucker-like swing appear in the groove. And I wish you good health!

@@VitDrumsAgain, drummers should feel free to lead with the left if they like, but I don’t think that’s a necessity to generate a great feel here. Cheers.
