Ordered mine as soon as I got the email and excited to receive it any day now! While I am a Jr. AD currently, I got into the industry in a roundabout way and never went to portfolio school. I often feel like I'm missing out because of it, so I'm very much looking forward to receiving the book and seeing how it can supplement my skills and knowledge of the industry and the role. I feel you on this! I did the traditional route (state university) and missed out on portfolio school. I’ve considered but the cost is so so much! (Not including what I owe for my BA). I’m waiting on my book and hope to learn about so much from it 🤘🏽🤘🏽

@@OpenDoorCreative Hey Kevin. Read your disclaimer in the book about how the industry standard for the big 3 Adobe programs could possibly change. Have any changed since the publishing of your book?

@@matthewnugent2107 nope, the big three are still the front runners and probably will be for quite some time in the photo editing, illustration, and layout/publishing space. In terms of 3D programs, Blender is taking strides to beat out Cinema 4D in a lot of designer’s minds since it is free to use. Other than that, Adobe is still king.

Hey Angel! I appreciate the kind words. Do not worry about age at all. Some people pivot to art direction far into their career. I’ve worked with an entry level art director in their 40s. Just focus on making great work and you should be alright! Best of luck.

Welcome back! You came back at a great time (for me). I graduated around May 2021 with a degree in Advertising and Branding with a focus in Art Direction... and have been struggling to land something 😔 I'm kind of lost. I don't have summer internship experience due to taking full-time classes during the summers so I feel disadvantaged compared to my peers. So maybe I'd like to see how to make connections (virtually), how to boost a LinkedIn profile visually, and resume formatting? My current resume looks design-y, but I've been told, due to the filtering companies use, to use a boring resume template instead. Anyway! I'm glad I got a notification from you today! Came back just for you! Haha but seriously don’t be discouraged. The beginning stages are tough and it’s easy to look around and feel behind. Just know you’re exactly where you’re suppose to be. Not to get too salesy on you but my book could help with a lot of what you’re feeling. @@madeline6221 great question. Inquiring for a job cold can be tricky. Best advice is to be more personal than the buttoned up professional and generic message that everyone uses. Show some of your authenticity and personality when reaching out. Make them feel special by explaining why you would be a good fit for their company in particular. The less generic the better. It’ll let them know you’re very interested and have done your research. Also make sure a link to your portfolio is mentioned early and very visible in case they are crunched for time. I wouldn’t exceed a paragraph or two for that reason as well. Introduction>why them>link to your site to check out>ask if they have any questions and you’d love to jump on a call to chat (all with your personality showing without over doing it as it can come across desperate). Hope that helps but also great idea for an interview.

Would love to know more about "when is the portfolio ready". Just finished ad school, and I have been reworking the portfolio on and on and it never seems to be good enough. Am I just postponing "looking for a job"?

Haha love it. It’s the creative curse. Many creatives think just as you are. If you have a spread of 3-5 campaigns with some side projects, you have enough to start applying. Sometimes job searching can take some time so it’s definitely worth revising and refining while you’re waiting for replies. Until you get the job, it’s a game of rinse and repeat. Continually sharpening it to be better. If you’d like to send me a link, I can give you a portfolio critique. That would be my other bit of advice is to start sending out your book to get ripped apart so you know where to focus your editing.
