Kevin, this is totally random, but I would love your opinion on how you would approach a situation where the company is looking for someone who understands the consumer/strategy behind the why and can speak to that. How would you be able to answer that? What, in your opinion, would the ideal candidate say/show? Especially someone who does not have too much strategy experience?
@OpenDoorCreativeКүн бұрын
@@minkadjurasevic7600 hey! Just so I’m totally understanding your question, do you mean a company you’re applying for is wanting to make sure you know the audience and strategy of their brands? That shouldn’t be the case as nobody is expected to know full consumer profile prior to landing a position. They’ll have to learn it right along with the brand. If you mean what you might say in an interview setting on how’d you go about learning the target, you could say something around the following: you’d want to dive deeper into performing a swot (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis and do a deep dive into developing a brand’s archetype to develop creatively how you would speak to your particular consumer segment. Ultimately, you want to narrow in on the target to more successfully message your creative.

Can i go into art direction with architecture degree? Provided i learn all the necessary skills on my own for art direction
@OpenDoorCreative11 күн бұрын
@@gulaborani5184 it’s all about your art direction portfolio. I know plenty of people who have become art directors with psychology, marketing, and other assorted degrees. You’ll just need to put in some real work to build a stellar portfolio that competes against those who went to school for it.

@@OpenDoorCreative Does the same apply to production design too? I was searching for job postings for PD but they mostly seem like they need a lot of experience too and seem like a job that mostly has no access to beginners with no experience in the field... So I'm at box 31 and I'll admit, I started using AI to help me with some more ideas. I know you gave us questions, but I already used those questions to help me get to 31. How will I ever get to 100? Any other tips on how to just make the ideas flow? Are you timing yourself? Are you intentionally jotting down stupid ideas just to get through the exercise?

My bf is an art director for TV and film and he does a lot of set building, buying, hiring, then sells props back to stores at the end of the shoot. Usually, it's the film director with the overall vision, but the art director can tell them what they're able to do with the budget (budget always has to go over in order to get something worth producing, but the producers always shoot low with the original budget to keep production from going too high) and brings ideas to the table on how to do it or how to make it even better. So there is creativity involved; He has a very quick way of visualizing what a general idea should or could look like and uses his creativity to problem solve. But you also have to be VERY good with people. You work with a lot of people and vendors during a long day of prep or shooting and you won't get called back if you are rude or just in general bad with ppl. You have to start as a PA or assistant. If you are handy but also creative and can work long days, then art in film might be doable for you. But my bf is hyperactive and easily bored and this job is perfect for him, so you would be a bad fit if you don't like a ton of physical activity or need lots of sleep. But you stand by on shoot days waiting for mundane tasks such as resetting visual elements of scenes, whether you are the art director or assistant. So it's a balance of working your butt off and then being patient and waiting around for the next scene or reset.

Just discovering your channel and it seems like everything I’ve done thus far in life sounds like Art Directing. I always enjoyed creating something that has never been seen or done before. Sometimes I have to use my graphic design skills, my photography skills, my videographer skills, my music skills, or even my own looks to showcase the art thats inside of me. This is truly amazing to finally put a title on what I want to do in life and fully pursue it. Thank you for your content.

You overlooked a few things, like directing on set, where you create the scene and tell the story visually. Plus, being able to draw storyboards is a big plus. And if you mix in some marketing and understanding how customers think, you're into visual merchandising. More skills mean more doors open! 😅 In a nutshell, an Art Director is someone who sees things differently, always aiming to tell a story that touches people's hearts and guides their feelings.

The presenting portion (at most shops) happens more and more at a senior level. In the meantime, you’ll be given smaller opportunities to grow that skill but it won’t be the main focus of your job. See my video on presenting as I think it will help you.

I dont think so. It is important to to know, but as an art director, especially in the initial phase where brainstorming and prototyping are on, I think new Generative AI tools would be more relevant to translate conceptual to visuals, saving a lot of time and resources. but this discussion goes deeper depending on the perspective of these tools

Sure thing. Wouldn’t say art direction is a side job since there is more complexity and larger conceptual projects unless you want to try and freelance for short term spurts at agencies BUT you could totally be a graphic designer on the side and take on smaller design projects.

What I'm actually wondering is if you can make a video that goes more in-depth with your techniques of actually creating the logo in illustrator. The tools, shortcuts, etc you use in your day to day design. I see a lot of videos going over the general approach to this but I have been finding it hard to find videos that actually show the process of making it symmetrical and balanced! If so, major thanks from an inspiring graphic designer :)
