It’s a little to early for me to start looking but how did you reach out to get jr ad? Did they notice your work and reach out or did you send like a portfolio to places?😊 thx

Thank you so much for this video, I'm a graphic designer and illustrator. I started freelancing after graduation but got tired of the insecurity of stability so I I've been searching for employment since 9 months ago and no luck has come to me yet, as the market has been very though this year... I applied to an Art director job just couple days ago just because, and cause I thought I could do most of the responsibilities and I checked all the requirements (was actually expecting a rejection because I did not think I had the years of experience to be one), I actually landed an interview and I just panicked cause imposter syndrome, so here I am researching what does an Art director do... I hope it goes well for me, praying I pass the initial interview tomorrow and that I get to get a second interview and essentially get the job.

Hey! Love your vids. Can you talk about the difference between working as art director in an ad agency versus art director in entertainment? Can you work as an art director in marketing entertainment like shows / movies / games? Thank you!!
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. I appreciate that. Unfortunately, I only know about art direction in the advertising industry. Though they share the same title, the job is vastly different in each of those industries. For that reason, I don’t have the expertise to speak about the entertainment biz. Hope that makes sense. Cheers!

What happens when you become a manager? Does your boss just give you the credentials to access the system that has your team’s salaries/benefits? How much power do you have when it comes to hiring/firing? For example, do you have to ask permission to fire someone OR can you just do it? Can you blow your budget hiring one expensive employee if you want to or does that have to be approved?
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 2 жыл бұрын
Haha being a manager definitely doesn’t give you the keys to make all the decisions. Being a manager comes with mentoring your fellow talent, keeping projects organized, assigning team members to projects, and providing edits/feedback before work goes to the client. You generally don’t have access to other’s salaries, benefits, firing (unless it’s warranted), and you have to be smart with your budget when client’s scope is negotiated (hiring is often a team decision). You do get to choose who gets hired but it must be approved by finance/HR. Good managers lead with empathy, encouragement, and a team-first mentality over power.

how many hours do you work? Every day(Monday to Friday). 9-18 pm? or for every position(Jr Art Director to Creative Director) you work a lot of time? I want to do this work, but in the future(with one family) I'll want to have also more time. Not only work. But for 5-10 years for me there aren't problem of time work. I've 25 years old. At November I'll start a course ( Art direction) with IED. Thanks for your video. Now I'll start to speak about art direction also on KZbin(Italian Language). Maybe in the future we'll do one video together 😊

Hours differ drastically from agency to agency or if you go client side. I know creatives that work a standard 40 hour week and those who work 60+. Location will also determine that sorta thing. You just have to find the place that’s right for you but work/life balance is definitely possible. For me personally, hours worked comes in waves. Some weeks I’m slammed and others are a bit more manageable. Just depends what projects are on your plate, how fast you can come up with ideas and design at a high quality, or if you’re on any extra projects like a new business pitch. Hope that helps.

@@OpenDoorCreative yes that's right thanks a lot Kevin. I see life in the same way, congratulations on your career, you are an inspiration to me! However I have seen that even the earnings clearly above the average this is also an excellent point. Sure you don't earn 10k per month, but 5k for sure (with freelance jobs too, you think you can get there). As I have also seen from your videos! Thanks again, you are the only one who makes videos about this job! Soon!

hi- i was wondering if you have any advice for what courses to take at uni to get into any kind of creative film direction or assistance? i was also wondering if the guidelines for costs are the same in england? thank you so much for this video- very helpful :)

Hey! I have a video about degree to be an AD that might help. For film, you’d probably want to start in any RTF program (radio, television, film). Every university’s curriculum is slightly different but you can’t go wrong with any visual communication courses to help you on your way. Unfortunately, I’m not sure about England’s pay. My research was just in the US. Best of luck!!!

Totally get it. There is a lot of overlap in the positions. Especially in a small shop where you have to wear more hats. The most important thing is to align on expectations with your higher ups to agree on your role and responsibilities.

Hi!! I just found your channel and would like to ask a few questions if you don't mind I have a passion in art and I want to do what I love for a living What would be a good paying job for someone who can do basically all types of art I mean I love doing it all mostly physical art though I haven't yet to tried digital Im pretty good at what I do considering my age I'm working on an art channel and thinking abt starting a temporary art business using my photography I don't really know where to go with my career though and my parents don't seem like their too happy with what I want to do which is why I chose to look into art directory but idk if it's right for me how DO you know if it's right for you

Hey! Welcome to the channel. Following your passion into a career is always a good idea. I wish more people entered jobs they ultimately love since we work so much of our lives. Might as well enjoy it. My first recommendation is to taste test, experiment, try out different things. This is the time to dabble and come out the other end with more clarity on your options. Art direction is a wonderful career where you get to use your artistic skills and get paid pretty well to do what you love. To learn more about the career, I recommend diving deeper on my channel. I have over 130 videos on the topic including a video called Is Art Direction Right For You (to reference your question). I also wrote a book called Breaking into Art Direction that you can snag on Amazon if you’re interested in diving deeper. Let me know if you have any specific questions along the way. Again, this is the perfect time to try shit. Start your art shop. Take photos. Learn some digital art jobs. See what speaks to you. Best of luck.

I have question, what if you just want this career as side job, is this a good career for like part time hobby? Sorry if i cant be anymore clearer
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 8 ай бұрын
Sure thing. Wouldn’t say art direction is a side job since there is more complexity and larger conceptual projects unless you want to try and freelance for short term spurts at agencies BUT you could totally be a graphic designer on the side and take on smaller design projects.

Any age! The earlier the better. I wish I would have started playing around with the programs much earlier. The best thing to do is dabble, create, explore. See if it’s something you enjoy before you commit.
