When it comes to the joist tape that black sticky stuff why not pre-cut it 8 ft length or a little bit extra and then cut it off at the end start up by the edge of the house siding and work your way down to the end of the deck and cut off the extra

An old builder taught me to use 6" tarpaper strips on the top of each joist. The decking holds it down and it sheds water . I replaced a deck he built after 50 years and the joists were like brand new! They still had the ink stamps on them!

I always start laying my deck board from the outer edge and work my way into the house that way my rip board is at the house but every builder's different Cheers

If you can lay them out ahead of time and know that you will have a decent size piece against the house that idea works well… But I’ve seen many times where people get to the house and they have a one or 2 inch strip and it doesn’t go well

Well if you can do simple basic highschool math, you can calculate how much board you'll need to cover the deck, and then make the deck the correct size from the beginning, so you have no cut-off anywhere. But math is scary, I guess?

I agree, I would Rip the board closest to the house as well. But not only that, I would have purchased all the materials needed and adjust the framing especially when it comes to the width (or length, depending on what you want to call it) That depends on what style of edge you are looking to achieve. I wouldn't have started framing without that Fascia.

You can also let your joists run "wild", and cut them towards the end of laying your decking. You can add blocking about 3/4 of the way to edge of joists, to keep things square, being as you wont install the rim joist until towards the very end. (Last few rows of decking). Or if you have a beam towards the end of the deck, that can get things square as well. Very similar to how framers cut the rafter tails for fascia, when building a house. Not my favorite way of doing it, but you can ensure full pieces this way as well with no rips.

Gotta check out Gtape for joist tape. The 3035 even comes without the backing paper. You can even peel it off itself when you inevitably fold it over. You don't have to throw that bit out.

1:08:32 Easy, change the angle from a 45 to what you can use and make the cuts. If it works out to be 35 on the deck, you need a 55 for the side. The outside seam will look identical.

I don't get why he did what he did. If he had done regular 45 to 45 joint all it would do is lift the vertical pieces 1/4 inch. His top boards were not too short, it is his side boards he seems to have cut short.

There is a screw called FastenMaster Cortex. It doesn't require pre-drilling and it has a bit that bores out a perfect hole for a plug that matches the board while driving the screw. They sell plugs that match Trek and other composite brands as well. That would be great for the areas where you have to face screw.

8:00 "Twelve-foot lumber" runs long because otherwise you'd wind up short after making a few cross cuts. The saw kerf eats up some of that extra inch. It's a good thing.

Closing out the property? I don't blame you man, that highway noise the whole video! And oh, this last summer I had to rebuild my deck, way bigger project than that. But boy, watching this I'm glad I went went regular wood. Although for some odd reason the lower portion of my deck was 10" on center, maybe it had to do with the fact that it was ground contact? IDK. To edge the deck I used a router, very clean nice edge, magic I learned from the Stud Pack channel!

I really appreciate the bit about the Trex requiring 12" joint spacing although wood allows 16" spacing. I had considered replacing my wood deck with Trex, but didn't pull the trigger. I just pressure washed it and it's looking OK, so I'll leave it as is.

Like the 3,4,5 method? What did you use on the raw edges of the treated wood? Mainly zooming in to actually see what you were talking about. But I do enjoy your videos.

I have always done a picture frame around the edge so you have 45 degree joints at the corners. This will allow you to do the same size overhang all around.

There is no 0 maintenance. There is low maintenance. ---- I have a composit deck with waterproofing and patio under it - I still have to wash it once a while, and use some car care products to make it shine and remove scratches. ----- The one downside of composit - its getting hot as hell during summer days 😂

I’ve never had a problem with my composite debt getting hot any worse than a wood deck. The problem with composite overtime especially with 5/4 boards is that it will sag so 12 inch center is a must

I moved 7 years ago and after the first summer, I actually tore up the composite decking because it was so hot on our feet. I replaced it with wood and the wife and I have loved it ever since. A deck you can't use is not worthwhile. Great video, thanks! P.S. I used the Camo system also and it was so easy to use. No visible fasteners. It was their other system that uses the tool that looks like a stapler.

I did the trex on my deck but just picture framed it with normal deck boards to hide all the weird edges and then stained that and it came out pretty good.

They typically make the same boad with square edge, often Lowes/Depot dont stock that stuff so youll have to order it. But your better off buying from a lumber company, typically way cheaper too.

** The reason 12ft lumber is more that 12-ft is twofold. Shrinkage _and_ so you can cut it (1/8 inch is lost due to the width of the saw blade) into several shorter pieces and still get say... four, 3-ft boards. :)

Re the tape, suggest start at house, peel of a couple of inches only of backing tape, spread stretch out tape to full length of joist, hold it in position and get someone to grab the tab of backing tape at house and pull it out, with other hand on top pushing tape to joist as they go. You made hard work of that bit.😊

My decks are post hole floaters 36” down. That composite is nice but are hot and bow in summer and can ice slick when wet.

I have cleaned many wood decks and fence in Ohio. I didn’t use a pressure cleaner but used a brush , not as stiff , WITHOUT HANDLE and a SPONGE! That stick keeps u from getting in corners. And u have to stand back which wears out your arms more. U could have used the small piece u cut off to do corners. I got down and dirty . Only thing about staining or painting is that if u do use a pressure cleaner later when it gets dirty again is that some of the paint or stain chips off. You’re right, we are in Fl now and there was only a cement back patio so my then husband had recycled wood put in. After so many years he had it painted a redwood color instead of staining. There is a drain but the water didn’t flow that way so last year (he died a few yrs ago) I had someone put in a new drain but the water is still sitting not even in that area. The wood is dipping and weak in one big area from the water sitting there. I think that joint tape sounds like an excellent idea. Well now it’s up to me to figure out what to do. I imagine I would have to get a whole new deck . It’s actually the floor of a screened in patio. We were in construction “roofing” and everyone knows a guy who knows a guy , but I don’t and it’s very difficult here to get ethical people who are good and take pride in what they do and charge the most. In Ohio of course years ago, we never hired anyone for anything and figured it all out ourselves with our Dads help & guys learned that way. No one wants to do any physical lanor or most weren’t taught or just watched their parents! Soon , we’ll have a lot of college educated poor people who don’t know and traits! I see it now just like you mentioned how materials and supplies are made now . I call them throwaways so you’re always spending money buying something more INNOVATIVE, lol which is worse. Home Depot... Butyl Joist Tape for under Decking Boards in East TN. 1-5/8''x50ft. use it on every deck I build.

I'm remodeling my home, currently painting. For paint I went with Benjamin Moore's top shelf paint that costs almost a hundred a gallon to non-contractors. Expensive, but I've worked with many different paint manufacturers over the years, and nothing works as well as a top shelf paint from BM or Sherwin Williams (BM has the best colors out of them all). Easier application, easier clean-up, less set-up in the brush (longer brush life), faster clean up with just soap & water (no petroleum solvents), and longer lasting paint life. 10 years later and a top shelf paint still looks new, except for whatever dings you've made... cheaper materials are harder to work with, take longer to work with, and tend to yield lesser results than quality materials. This is what we Architects call the "Life Cycle Cost" of a material. It may be cheap in the beginning, but in the long run you'll spend more in repairs and maintenance, replacing rot, etc.

if you are ever doing a lot of drilling like the skirt boards forget measuring/eyeballing. measure and drill a scrap piece and use it as a template. if your template is accurate every other board will be accurate. the screws will be damn near laser line perfect and look sexy as hell perfectly spaced

You have to use the Trex Joist Tape. It's 1-5/8" and is enough to cover 50 ft. They also have beam tape that is 3-1/8" if you happen to need that. I'm not sure about Canada, but Lowe's stocks it on the shelf in the U.S.

I recommend removing the grass first step, and lay a landscape fabric and then rock or pea gravel before the deck is constructed. And sticking on a two inch piece of roofing starter on top of each joist will help protect them from rot.

Hey, I use Huber Zip tape instead of butyl joist tape. It is cheaper, doesn't have a backing, and if i want I can cut a roll in half and double it up for twice the length.

Some manufacturers allow 16OC for their composite deck boards. You must read and know the limitations of materials.

Trex and most major brands allow 16 OC for straight decking w/o voiding the warranty. If you install diagonally you need 12 OC.

Good to know about the 12" on center for the composite boards. Planning to put a small landing (not attached to the house) outside the back door. I wonder if I need the blocking between joists for that. Peeling the backing off of tape is the bane of my existence. I always have a hard time with it. LOL. Ugh. sorry about your truck's window. That is never fun when it breaks. Hmm.. I don't even know if I will do fascia boards on my landing. Nobody but my family and the critters will see it. I have something you can try unroll the tape to another roll and roll it back up on the other side. OR use 3M B- sealing tape that I use to splice buried cable I mean (telephone cables) I am talking about water proof stretches and no paper to pull off and then sticks in place and stays flexible too. That is my ideas

What about measuring & cutting the deck tape before taking off the cellophane back, that way you don't have to deal with the weight of the roll twisting & falling off joist. You might try small zip ties as you cut to put between tape & cellophane for peeling starts.

I used damp proof PVC it doesn't have a self adhesive side just lay it on the joist and stapled it. This post is like a Mack Sennett production.

I did a deck during COVID. Then, the cost of Trex was essentially the same as wood, because of the wood prices shooting to the stars during COVID. Hence, I did my front deck in Trex. I live in the land of 200 days of rain per year, so Trex is soooo the way to go.

The solution to the 'unseen' edge is simple. Cut a straight 1" away from the joist, then do you 45degree cut. You even said when setting the skillsaw that 1" high is correct.

True maintenance free and lower cost would have been poured concrete. I re-decked my deck, and learned composite isn't maintenance free. Dirt, bird poop, and tree debris looks bad, so finding regular cleaning is needed. The gravel as a boarder won't be maintenance free either. My solution for no facia board was better grade exposed joists and solid PVC boards and end grooveless decking. Joists can be sealed or painted. Facial boards are flimsy, require special fasteners, and trap moisture. I opted to skip screws through the deck boards on the ends, and instead made it fully floating. The PVC composite expands contracts more than wood and needs to allow this movement, otherwise it will warp over time. Also Trek decking that use wood filler is susceptible to water absorption, so any breakthru of the PVC cap is potentially going to be a failure point (screws, end cuts, miter cuts). I suspect many composite decks will end up replaced in a timeframe close to wood.

You may be able to fix that miter appearance on the back waterfall edge by putting a round over bit in your router and running it all the way around the deck, giving it a bull nose edge.

That may not work with plastic decking, because of the textured surface on only the top of the boards.

You were asking what the opinions were for the waterfall pieces around your perimeter once installing the waterfall pieces if your lumber store carries tracks that is not the hidden screw system you can run a band over the waterfall system to the top of your boards and hide that and grain that you were talking about on the neighbor's side

Just use regular plastic damp proof membrane and staple it in place , if needs be put a bit of bitumen paint on the staples . But I’d probably bitumen the top of the wood joints anyway if not all of the wood . That way it will last as long as the plastic decking , which is still unproven due to its recent development . Was there enough thickness so you could have cut a rabbit/groove in the facia board to insert the deck board?

You could solve the issue by making the last edge board thinner, probably could do it with the circular saw, if you don’t have a planer available

This is like this stuff that you put on the valleys and the start of your course of shingles on a house or shed. If you get it wrong the wind or whatever lift it up and blow it all over and make a mess just like you’re going through on this deck

I probably would have just resorted to a wood facia board. Paint it gray to match or black for contrast.

The only thing I don't agree with is a perfectly level deck. ALWAYS pitch at least 1/8" away from the house, 1/4" pitch is preferred over 8'. Also a vapor barrier on the top of joists will help with preventing rot in 40 years when the Trex is still in good shape but needs to be replaced because your framing has rotted into the ground. Also putting a mesh or barrier under any framing that touches the ground is a good idea. Besides that, you have good technique and a lot of knowledge and skill.
