Nope all africa needs is less corruption and fair trade from the west. This we do for our farms, as a hobby or holiday homes like the rest of the world. We shouldnt settle for less but educate the masses on how to make politicians responsible. A location full of metal containers is also ugly

This is absolutely incredible. I've always wanted to build a shipping container house and this is really inspiring. The pop-out and angled windows are ideas I might have to 'borrow'. Great work on the outside too. I love the ivy but I prefer when shipping containers houses are left to look like shipping containers. That wouldn't be appropriate here though. I think Adam might be the smiliest man on Earth.

+Matthew Paul McCrory It's very nice though i would rather two containers to feel comfortable. The view to river is stunning and it can recompense the narrowness of the "house". I hope he can swim in this river.
@mortycremwatch9 жыл бұрын
Solar Hellas My dream would be to have two containers as the ground floor (kitchen, dining and living areas) with a third stacked on top (for bedroom(s) and bathroom). I'd then, ideally, use the remaining space on the roof of the ground floor as a balcony area. I want a shipping container house as a permanent home though, as an alternative to standard construction techniques.
@paintballjunkie659 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Paul McCrory you can buy a "best barns shed" from home depot for 10k. It is the size of 4 shipping containers. 16x32 and 16ft high and its 2 stories so just over 1000sqft home depot and lowes have them online. Its about 8-15k to finish the inside into a home. Me and my wife are in the process of doing this.
@lafuller1009 жыл бұрын
+Solar Hellas I have the same idea of two 40 ft shipping containers side by side for more width, I really wanted 52 ft containers but they are hard to find and if more expensive because they are hard to find
@mortycremwatch9 жыл бұрын
TheCodFather thanks for the heads up but I'm in the UK and we don't have Home Depot or Lowes here. Good luck with your project! I want to build a shipping container home because I'm interested in re-using materials and sustainability, moreso than cost factors. It's great that it's cheaper than a conventional build but I'm not just looking for the largest square footage for the smallest price. I like the idea of the challenge of turning a big metal box into something more than just a big metal box. I'd love to build by the water too and I think there's something funny about using shipping containers in that context. It's a massive bonus that I love the stark, industrial look of the containers.

@Propertyexit9 жыл бұрын
+deezynar I didnt see them fur our the ceiling and walls. They showed how the laid the 2x4 flat to save space which i get, and the next frame you see is them putting up the drywall, no wiring, no plumbing. I can figure out how they may have done the electrical, but still not that plumbing!!!!
@deezynar9 жыл бұрын
+Propertyexit The ceiling is well below the roof deck, so wiring is easily routed there, and you can see can lights installed in the ceiling. The sheet rock is on 1x4 battens screwed flat to the wall, so it's a tight fit behind it, but enough for wiring. The corrugations in the container's skin provide enough room for receptacle boxes, but I only saw one mounted in an exterior wall, it was at the left end of the kitchen counter. The switches for the lights seem to be in the frame wall at the bathroom. The kitchen counter does not have near enough receptacles to meet code in the US. That's probably because they ran the countertop right into the window and didn't have a back splash. The plumbing fixtures are a zero water toilet that pipes out through the floor. They have a lav & shower in the bath, and there's a kitchen sink and D/W. The supply piping is either routed in the ceiling space, or below the floor, and is led to each fixture in a corrugation in the wall. If the supply is routed above the ceiling, they'd have to get it over to the kitchen sink below the cabinets, since the window is right there. The sewer drains, after going thru their traps, probably go straight down thru the floor, and never enter the wall. I would connect them all together into one 3" pipe and run it to the septic system. The each sewer vent probably goes up in a corrugation in the wall, and then elbows into the space above the ceiling and penetrates up thru the roof as VTRs. The window above the kitchen sink would require a different method, I would specify an air admittance valve under the counter.

I have put alot of though into this. I would use welded angle iron frames to reinforce the door and window openings and set the windows in flush with the wall like in a normal house. I would use metal studs for framing, using the narrow studs to furr the exterior walls. Insulation would be sprayed on urethane foam which provides insulation and vapour barrier in one. This can also be applied to the roof and coated for added insulation and roofing in one, which would be my prefernce for joining multiple units. The exterior could also be clad in ridgid styrofoam insulation and then sided over with choice of exterior finish.Or because these are made from Corten Steel they could be sand blasted and left to rust for a natural almost rustic look with no worry of the shell rusting away. I would sand and stain the floors and use an epoxy based sealant. This way any possible contamination would be sealed , and the Teak plywood is naturally beautiful. The rest of the construction would be standard practices. One would have to keep in mind local buildings codes, most juristictions would require an engineer because of the non typical construction type. Also cutting open large sections or stacking and cantilevering them would require substantial reinforcement. These may not be a cheap building type for everyone, but for someone with metal working skills, construction knowledge and access to heavy equipement and tools it would be reasonable. 2 major advntages are that you are starting with a weather tight enclosure, and they are modular and easily moved meaning they could be constructed offsite which has substantial savings for cabins/ homes in remote areas.

So, no vapor barrier? Can any of your construction pros tell me if a vapor barrier would go against the steel or on the inside of the batting under sheetrock?
@PDZ11229 жыл бұрын
+Ahntara123 Why would you need a vapor barrier with steel?
@Ahntara1239 жыл бұрын
Same reason as with any material = the difference in inside and outside temperature causing condensation.
@shaggyone39249 жыл бұрын
+Ahntara123 The steel is the vapor barrier. It's pretty much impermeable, not allowing the transfer of water molecules through the steel. Any moisture in the outside air will accumulate on the exterior of the building. Standard building practices in the U.S. require some sort of vapor retarder on the interior as well. This can be achieved by using paper backed insulation or visqueen, but sealed and painted drywall will basically accomplish the same results. My only concern with this build would be the installation of the ceiling. It would appear that there is quite a large air gap between the ceiling panels and the shipping containers roof. If any hot air from the interior living space made its way up to the metal roof on a cold day, condensation would surely form (using a "dry" heating system would alleviate some of the risk; like a wood burning stove). They may have sealed the ceiling panel joints or added exterior vents, but we don't know for sure? Another concern would be that there is not insulation at all in the floor, other than what would appear to be a radiant barrier installed under the laminate flooring. Being that the house sits off the ground and has basically no wind screens (at least until the plants grow in), the home owner will have cold floors in the winter and will have to expend more energy to keep the house cool in summer (this is heavily dependent on the regions climate though). We can only hope that the architect took the necessary precautions to alleviate some of these issues, but then, this is a Better Homes and Gardens program and like the contractor mentioned, it's all designed to be temporary?
@PDZ11229 жыл бұрын
That was my point too - steel is vapor proof. Condensation is a function of isulation,. not vapor transmission.

Nice design. I have a 40' on my property and now I know what to do with it. Only thing I might change is add a 2nd 40' for width and maybe a 20' to increase and create a master suite. Are there any tips for laying the footings?
@TheREALOC19722 жыл бұрын
a 40 footer is bigger than most people think, it's 320 square feet when built out, insulated and dry walled. I'm planning on doing one but I live in Hawaii and i'm putting my kitchen and dinning area outside on the deck because we as a society in Hawaii spend 90%, or more honestly, of our time outside. I also came up with some space saving ideas, I'm not going to have a full size oven, 2 years ago I bought a 9 function countertop air fryer/oven and haven't used my full size oven more than a couple times since, General rule of pairing down/living tiny, if you don't use it more than once or twice in a 6 month period you don't need it. I have my air fryer/oven, Microwave, pressure cooker and crock pot, there's literally nothing I can't cook. While it's true I'm never going to cook a full sized Thanksgiving turkey, I won't ever cook one anyway, It's just me and my Gf and there are big enough to cook a Turkey Breast, the green bean casserole I'll cook in the crock pot, The deviled eggs, mashed potatoes and gravy I can make in the Microwave and they can all be stored away on a open shelf out of the way when they aren't being used.

$45,000 is for material only or labour included?
@BFD15i5 жыл бұрын
Looks like material only. But to be honest, there's no real difficult labor needed here. If you know how to cut and weld steel and how to hold a screwdriver, you're pretty much good to go.

I like the idea of a using a shipping container. I would paint it so it's not all white. A little color is beautiful.

"Remember, fight the urge to look at someone welding. It could blind you." *zooms in on the welding*
@abbyovitsky9 жыл бұрын
KartGaming zooms in on one negative looking hard for it in a sea of hopeful happy positive cooperation; the welder has been welding since age 14. those of you who have not should hire someone or get a mask, he's doing it unsafely without a mask but he's not welding with flame, he's sawing with a saw you can buy on Amazon or at Home Depot.

+KartGaming - Let's Plays & Gameplay Videos Hi I love your video, particularly your ideas in the second half for shipping containers homes for sale. Something I also found useful for where to buy shipping containers was Skyarza Container Home Star - it should be on google if you need it

+KartGaming - Let's Plays & Gameplay Videos I loved this video. However If somebody wants to design a home from a shipping container I recommend Renkarter Container Report. A friend talk me about this page. They are the best in design of container home. I suggest search on google - shipping container builders -

It's beautiful! Did they really do this in 5 working days? Wish we could have seen a bit about how they did the electrical and plumbing.

It's the same process, run them through the walls and ceiling

And the plumbing . . . where does the used water exit to . . . ? 😬
@shakaama9 жыл бұрын
why not 2 containers? i don't get the pricing either.
@dlysele8 жыл бұрын
+shakaama Depends on the purpose of the homeowner. This looks like a get-away weekend home, so it doesn't need much of space. But there might be land regulations involved from different countries depending on the size of the home, so it would restrict the space used.

+shakaama hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover container home designs try Jadonite Shipping Container Buddy (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my buddy got cool results with it.
@jbrooksci8 жыл бұрын
remember, it has to be wired and plumbed, so that pushes the price up.
@TrunxKraft30008 жыл бұрын
yeah, that was a lot for some containers. Here in TX you can buy them in great condition for $1700 for a 20ft container.
@jbrooksci8 жыл бұрын
Where I am, containers are between 4-6k in decent shape; ones which need some welding/repair occasionally come available for less (2k); they are all at a premium and very appreciated. So it just depends on where you are located. If you are away from major hubs, something else which falls into the mix is transport, since they would need to be hauled to the location.

A couple things if you live in the US not Australia. You want to be facing south for passive solar heat. Australian to US dollar is .70; so their $45,000 = $30,000 USD. I'm planning to build my container home in 6 months in southern Arizona.

What did you use for a water source; drinking and bathing? And what about cooking: are you using a tank to store heating and cooking fuel? Looks like a great job. Congratulations.
