This is how I built a high end Mosrite style guitar from a cheap DIY kit

Here are the parts I used for this build:
Mosrite Kit (Use coupon code GUNSNGTRS to save $10):
shrsl.com/13u0k
Seymour duncan mini humbucker neck:
amzn.to/2Omryh9
DiMarzio FS-1 bridge pickup:
amzn.to/2CUSOlG
Moslike tremolo:
www.ebay.com/i...
roller bridge:
amzn.to/2HAa7KH
graphtec nut:
amzn.to/2QyVA2P
3 position on/off/on (for north/series/south wire hack):
amzn.to/2oNWM5B
2 position on/on (for phase switch): (I already had one left over from a previous project)
amzn.to/2NqnBL7
copper shielding tape (with conductive adhesive):
amzn.to/2Np2dG2
FULL DISCLOSURE: links in this description are affiliate links (except eBay, because they don’t believe in freedom)
Here are the tools I used to build this guitar kit:
angle grinder:
amzn.to/2CVKp1h
sanding flap disc (used 80 grit, but if I had it to do over again, I’d use this 120 grit disc):
amzn.to/2QpMvsZ
Router:
amzn.to/2t95Cg8
Jigsaw:
www.amazon.com...
Black and Decker rotary tool (I like this better than the dremel and it’s actually cheaper):
www.amazon.com...
rotary tool remote line kit (flex shaft):
www.amazon.com...
Lastly, here is the recording interface I use in case you're interested:
amzn.to/2MyRnJ4
Full disclosure: I am an Amazon Associate, and the links in this description are affiliate links, which means that if you make a purchase, it doesn't cost you any more money, but I will earn a commission.
Basically, here is the short version of how I converted this kit into a Mosrite Ventures model guitar:
I carved a bevel into the body using the angle grinder with a sanding flap disc
I cut the base of the neck at an angle so that I could install the neck pickup at an angle
I made a pickguard and pickup rings out of 1/8” birch plywood I got from a craft shop using a jigsaw, router, and dremel for shaping the pickup holes.
I filled the holes for the string tail piece, and installed the moslike tremolo system
replaced the bridge with the kmise roller bridge
replaced the zero fret with a graphtec nut
leveled and crowned the frets
installed a seymour duncan mini humbucker in the neck and dimarzio fs-1 in the bridge (Johnny Ramone’s pickup layout). and added a phase reversal switch for both pickups together, and a north/series/south switch for the mini humbucker.
This is probably the best guitar that I’ve ever built, and I’m sad I have to sell it. Oh well, I guess I can always build another one someday…

I think you're fine mentioning where you get your parts and supplies from, it's good to know where to get good deals and decent cheap products from. For some reason people who watch youtube get really upset when they think a video has advertisements in it (even though that's not what you're doing). I don't understand why since everyone is ok with advertisements being in every other aspect of their lives.

rebilacx - I've noticed advertisements are getting 'ruder' - now they always seem to interrupt mid sentence, they tend to be maximally loud and they can't be paused or skipped without quitting the app not to mention they run a bit long for an "Unstoppable" ad. *Way to be an asshole retailer making people resent your company.*

This comment is in no way directed to this channel ( i actually respect this guys integrity in not advertising). It is because just a few years ago there were several decent guitar channels. Guitar and gear companies caught on, seen the influence, and started indirectly buying these channels by giving free gear and bought them Cheap! For just a little bit of gear, most of these channels can be bought. And thats what happened. What was once pretty good channels became infomercials basically, others said 'fuck this' and quit. Fat boy Fricker (hope that name catches on) is a prime example of latter. I dont sit around at home and watch infomercials. And I dont enjoy watching them on KZbin either.

@@juanvaldez5422 Who cares! People work for compensation. Period. Everything is a product. You watch infomercials every day. Stop cursing in comment sections and come wash my car for me; for free. Here is every video I've seen on this awesome channel so far: this guy shows you where to get products and how he uses them. Where to get products to use on the products, or; how to make the products out of other products. It's pretty F'ing awesome, really. If this dude gets something free: great. I'll decide if I like it or turn off the computer and play guitar or Prawnhub. Every body wants sweat shop labor products, free arts and crafts and disposable income and no taxes. I legitimately really liked the longer video. It wasn’t like some long videos where it’s just extended Footage of you doing things with barely any voiceover, or boring voiceover. The demo you gave showing how neck angle has everything to do with action height was great! I buy cheap..inexpensive guitars and set them up really low. When it's a cheap guitar you don't worry about messing it up! But neck angle issues were the reason none of my guitars would allow low action without fret buzz. And adjusting the neck angle by using shims was how I fixed every one of my guitars. There's so few videos showing neck angle and it's affect on string height..it's very strange how few videos there are about that. So..thank you! You do awesome work, excellent description and explanations, you're the best!

A flapdisk is exactly what I've seen luthiers use for carving bodies. Nice build! The only thing I'd say is that shimming at just the heel can cause your neck to warp over time. StewMac makes neck shims that are a bit pricey, but are perfectly shaped, and fit the whole pocket. You can also make your own with a thin sheet, and some time sanding.

I've been picking for around 47 years but have never attempted a build. My son, who I got started picked at age 12 is an accomplished professional specializing in dobro, pedal steel and any style 6 string playing. He's been building dobros and lap steels for a couple of years and seeing his accomplishments has me anxious to start off with several kits. I have to say that your channel has given me the most inspiration and once I get moved in the next month or so, I'll have my own nice studio space for my 13 guitars and 6 amps as well as a separate space to build. For the "German carve" I think many people simply use a cove bit with a router. Gives a more dramatic Mosrite-style curve to the carve. I've been eyeing the MosLike for my current build, but I've already countersunk my bridge posts. So it was helpful to see that it will likely not work. There is another Mosrite-inspired vibrato that goes by the name Mosby that has a tension roller in order to create the needed break angle on a lower bridge.

Hey Dan, I do have a question regarding wiring if you don't mind. TL;DR, rotary switches for coil splitting/phase/series/parallel? The 5 string ash kit bass that I built turned out really nice even without having done any real mods or upgrades yet but I do plan on upgrading and modding it. One thing that got me thinking was that it came with 4 connector PUs; I would love to try out some coil spitting, series/parallel, in/out of phase. My question is, what about using rotary switches for that? I really want to keep it fairly simple looking, i.e. not a bunch of switches and knobs. It's a 4 hole layout and I want to do Vol, Blend, internal tone (I always leave my tone roller all the way off), and a switch for either PU. Sorry for the long-winded question, wiring just isn't my forte. Thanks in advance for anything you can give me.

I like longer videos when it comes to stuff to like this. Also, Ben Crowe does carving with an angle grinder (necks and bodies), nothing wrong with doing it that way! A local guitar builder I spoke to has used an angle grinder to carve a Les Paul body and said the amount of control you get is actually pretty good. Please don't stop talking about tools completely, it's nice to hear from someone who uses them what is good and bad and the reasons why, or even quick tips on using them.

Best neck shim is a perfect wedge shape, has to be gently hand sanded on a block to taper it to a zero edge. This doesn't leave a gap for the the neck maple wood to flex and 'fretboard hump' over time. A perfect material is a piece of old mahogany baseboard. It's actually close to the right width.

there were 2 versions of the ventures II model, the early slab body that johnny ramone played and the later german carve model that ricky wilson from the b-52-s played. semie mosely was pressured to produce a lower-cost student model and came up with the original slab design, but he hated the early slab body saying it looked too cheap, which was the main reason it was discontinued and replaced with the german carve version.

Love the build. I built my own P90 Jazzmaster from your other video, & it is my go-to guitar. So much better than going to a guitar store & paying $1,000's for a guitar that you might not exactly like.

Talking about the how/why and putting the links to the where-to-find in the description, plus going more in-depth in the video = WIN. When doing builds, longform = the best. Thanks for listening to us!

I don't mind you advertising where you get these. It's not a commercial, it's important information.

Since you said you're not going to talk much about parts, I'm going to plug one! Looks like I see a Wilkinson roller bridge! Love those things, put them on a few of my own guitars, and a handful of others I've worked on. One of the things I like best about them, is that they're adaptable to any fretboard radius if you cut shims from an aluminum can and place them beneath the saddles before locking them down. They also have the feel of a tune-o-matic under your hand, but more rounded and comfortable. Can't recommend that product enough! Edit: I just noticed that this is an older video, and saw the issues with the bridge height that required shimming. I've had that problem myself, except instead of shimming, I cut the angle into the neck pocket itself. Have you experimented with this at all since shooting this video? I find it to be a better (but irreversible) method, as it keeps all of the original wood to wood contact in the pocket. I use a router sled and box that I built with hinged rails, so you can change your routing angle. Initially built that for carving the tops on Les Paul builds, specifically the pickup and fretboard plane angles, but it works great for neck pockets as well! PS: LOVE the finish you put on this one!

The Dan Thomson way of removing material when doing a carve is fine by me. That's how I've been doing it, I learned it from Crimson Guitars so I'm sure we're not the only ones. Also that demo of wiring mods at the end was probably the best, clearest example I've heard on KZbin. Sometimes I can't hear a difference in wiring examples but it was totally different here, just like you'd switched to another guitar with a click of a switch. I could finally hear the "mid scoop" and so on.

Good! Glad you can hear the difference this time. I believe I chose the right wire hacks for this guitar, I like every tone I get from it.

Love your videos man, love hearing about the products you use. I do wish you could've gotten the zero-fret to work, I'm a fan of them. Did you consider sinking the trem down into the body a bit? It might help with the downward tension on the bridge, plus it would look kinda cool. Keep up your awesomeness.👍
@GunsandGuitars
@GunsandGuitars 6 жыл бұрын
I was bummed about the zero fret too. If I kept it a hard tail I would’ve just added a string retainer bar and called it good, but with a trem the retainer would’ve jacked with tuning stability. And yes I did think about sinking down the trem, might do that in the future if I choose to use it again in a future project. I did like that tremolo.

If you don't like shims, you can plane a little wood off the heel on the side toward the headstock.

Honestly... the neck pup sounded a little muddy, but the bridge sounded awesome!! Maybe that's why Johnny didn't use the neck pickup! The trem REALLY does sound "surfy"!
@101Volts
@101Volts 11 күн бұрын
The neck pickup's unlikely to be an 100% accurate replica of John's - this is from a cheap kit, you can't expect a real neck pickup of the same kind (which could cost the same as the entire kit) to sound just the same.

Btw guys, Univox made a nice clone of these in the 70s called the Hi-Flyer. They sound great and they’re very affordable especially considering the quality and the fact that they’re vintage.

Dan, I would love to see a build of a stringray like bass guitar. - 1 bridge pickup. Several copies have surfaced and then disappeared. They did not have the 18V circuit and a few other things. I would consider a S.U.B. converted or something like that. Also, I have been trying to create a Mark Sandman bass with the 2 strings.

Man, I've been waiting for this for ages! Glad to see you did such a stellar job - the stain job is amazing. I got an Aria mosrite style body and neck a few months ago that's bright pink. It has a strat style bridge but I'm going to fill the cavities and install a Jag/Jazz style bridge plate with a tune-o-matic and re-finish it Lake Placid Blue!
