I have designed a press for fire starter, this fire starter is water proof, wind proof, and matchless. I have two different sizes. this is a fund raiser for my daughter to raise money for 4h.

I had a question. What do you think would work better to make firestarters? And Why? Low Melt, Regular or High Melt Parafin Wax?

Here is a glue-up tip for you. If you always apply the glue to the inner surface first you will find it's less messy, and if you need to lay the first part down for a moment you won't have to worry about getting dirt in the joint. It's a minor point but you might find it useful.

I have to confess, as I was watching I thought to myself, is there anything they look at that they don't say, "hey! I could refab that into something else?" Want a long lasting firestarter? Easy. Just fill a whole caulk tube with cotton and cotton+Vaseline. Seal the ends with glue or heat or wax. Light the pointy end. If you can't get a fire started with THAT, you better hang it up! lol Now for the serious part - You can fill a caulk tube with tinder or heating type wood pellets. Easy carry. Should provide enough heat to cook a big meal for 4 people.

Put the cotton disks on both ends then they will be double-side ignitable. You could ALSO put your magnesium shavings into the mix. Wouldn't that be cool?

For the gravel, could we just buy a bag of the volcanic pebbles that is used as decorative mulch and smash it to pieces? I couldn't see a source for it.

Now, Mr. Honey-do Carpenter... I am surprised @ you because you didn't use your aircrete principle when making these fire-starters... You know that when you compress all the air out of a thing it becomes less conducive to catch a spark. You need airspace in there too. I suppose when you use parrafin you lose your airspace quite a bit anyway, but, it seems to me that just making a puck former and pouring the ingredients in would be better than using a caulking gun... I've never done either so I can't compare. Neat idea anyways.
