A ready made watch of that quality would be less than $100. The cost of the tools purchased a la carte would probably be around $100 as well. The fact that they include everything needed and also provide video instructions makes these kits well worth it for the novice watch hobbyist. Not a bad deal for someone starting out in the watch hobby.

Tools of that "quality" (afaics) cost around 13 EUR on eBay;-) I know, that building is part of the fun, but I think 250/300+ EUR/$/GBP for a watchkit that can, in hours, be build to a watch that is inferior to a Pagani Design (or else) for 50+ bucks is not a really good deal …

I love mesh bracelets. I chucked away the bracelet on my current dive watch and put a 4 dollar aliexpress mesh bracelet on it. Feels amazing, very comfortable and it feel sturdy. It even has quick release spring bars included. I hope they will become the standard again in the future.

I agree that it is a good value. The black dial and mesh looks very nice. I think that a black sterile dial with applied idicies would be a tasteful upgrade. I'm still just a hobbyist and started by fixing my own watch then some non running vintage watches, but this kit would have been a great place to start as you know that you will have a running watch when finished and not be concerned with sourcing parts or cleaning cap jewels! Thanks for a fun video Michael.

Wau that green dial in conjunction with the mesh bracelet realy pops. It catapults the time piece to whole new level. I do think a Suisse mouvement would have lifted this some more. Nothing against NH35 but I prefer the ETA 2824. More heritage to it.

Learning watchmaking is fun but challenging, if you're going to take that first step, buying a kit like that is a good idea because you've got enough on your plate getting to grips with assembling the watch. Gasket grease, and a case cushion would be a welcome addition to the kit, but if you don't know anything about watchmaking then that's advanced knowledge, I remember getting my case cushion I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, a good review BTW.

I think it is a great product. I noticed kits for 198 dollars. Not bad at all. This hobby is not a cheap hobby Mike. Even if you are careful to try and buy exactly what you need it adds up quickly. Once you get started buying tools it seems like it is non-stop what you can spend your money on. Nice watch by the way. Enjoy.

I like the concept. I briefly looked at their site and liked what I saw. Some say it is a bit pricey but for someone like myself who doesn’t have the knowledge of what fits with what I like the idea of being able to make sure everything goes together without any issues. I do wish they had some bracelets to pick from as I like them better than straps but I guess I could do as you did and get them elsewhere.

Nice, love that mesh bracelet it really sets off the watch. A minor point perhaps but the only thing i dont like because its sort of confusing is the seconds hand, IMO the arrow on the short end should point the other way, eg like feathers on a real arrow. eg this >----o------------ rather than this

I got mine as a 40th present from my mum who knew I loved watches- my main watch is a Reverso which is great for most days, but for holidays by the beach/pool it’s nice to have something that’s a bit more of a beater but still with that added sentimental value (along with telling people “I made it myself” on the odd occasion someone asks). My only negative is that I’d love to have a decent bracelet available with fitted end links. Might try a mesh like yours but with so many great Strapcode bracelets at reasonable prices, even if they made the endlinks by themselves that fitted with other bracelets it would be good.
@MyRetroWatches

You make a very good point and its actually something I have raised with DIY personally. Even their latest kit still mainly come on rubber. I haver their latest GMT model to film in the next week or so and thats on rubber. A bracelet can really lift a watch and make to look much more classy. rounded end links do get rid of that annoying gap. My mesh works really well though.

Nice job, the result is very nice. The kit seems very well thought out, but I tend to disagree with you on the value for money side. I just made my own automatic watch, a Rolex Submariner hommage (shame I can't post any pictures so you could see the final result). I bought most of the parts and tools on Ebay and Aliexpress and it cost me around $100 for the watch itself and around $40 for the tools, which is more than half the price. To be fair, I chose a slightly inferior quality movement (Mingzhu DG 2813, which cost me around $25) but a NH35 doesn't cost that much more. As for the knowledge of how to build a watch, everything is here on KZbin if you look hard enough. I learnt a great deal from you, Mark Lovic, the Nekkid Watchmaker or even My Mate Vince. However, the big positive aspect of this kit is being sure that all the parts will come together nicely. I remember spending a lot of time sourcing the parts, making sure they would fit together and hesitating before ordering them.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I did say you could do it cheaper but you also have to know which part will fit what etc. Not everyone would know this or have the time to search for it all. This kit has a place in the market I think, its an experience with an end product you get to keep. Kits do start at $199 which again is not bad for what you get plus the video instructions. They also have to make at least 35% margin I would think for it to be viable as a business.

I do love this idea but for me it's a little high price wise (I do get it's high quality stuff though), in this price range there are a lot of good ready made options and theres always the risk you could make the mistake and damage the watch which can be a little difficult to write off at this price point. To me gift wise the sweet spot would be £100-150ish, maybe swapping out to a Chinese or Vostok based build to reduce the cost.

I bought almost the same kit late last year as my first foray into putting a watch together. Needless to say, I think that I made just about every mistake in the book during my first attempt at the build (bent hands, scratched dial, didn't clean as fastidiously as I should have etc), however, it taught me some very important lessons and when I returned to the project after a period of frustration and having sourced a rather natty Omega-esque wavey dial and alternative hands, I ended up with a really nice end result which I gifted to a friend for Christmas 2020 with a selection of straps with quick release spring bars so that he could adjust the look quickly and easily. Needless to say, he was well chuffed with the gift and despite having subsequently restored/repaired a number of his other watches I often see him wearing what was my first ever build which I take no small measure of pride in. I'm still a novice at this horology malarkey but with the excellent content produced by Mike @ My Retro Watches, The Nekkid Watchmaker and, of course, Marshall @ Wristwatch Revival, I learn new things every day and am gradually gaining confidence in this, now, inescapable art. Perhaps, one day, I will get the gumption to even attempt my own KZbin video? I certainly have enough of the gear, just need a tad more of the idea hehe. Keep up the good work Mike, really enjoy your content, Netflix has gone out of the window these days 🤣

Thank you Joe. Yes. In my opinion you might be able to source it all cheaper but you have to work out what dial works with what movement etc, then tools to buy. This is a one stop shop deal with quite a few options to choose from. Equally you can then modify it further using aftermarket Seiko parts for an NH35 bought from eBay and alike.

What a great video thank you very much. I thought it was so much more complicated. Video has given me the confidence to purchase a kit and try this. I am going to go for the miyota what does 60 hour power reserve. The one thing that I think DIY could change is the second hand. I would like to see the arrow end be the long end. No if I wanted to could I purchase separate handset and use them instead of the handset that comes with it. I also would like to see DIY give us a choice of a handset maybe two or three choices something a little fatter with more loom.

I considered buying this watch kit but it was missing a few things I wanted. I wanted a day and date feature and this one only has date. Then the watch face is flat without any raised lettering. Then I was't sure about the finish detail of the case. I ended up buying a seiko Snk809 as my first automatic and I love it but I wish it had hacking and I find the dial a little distracting. Also I wish it had more waterproofing capacity. If this company gets some of these features then I might consider buying it as a second watch. I do like the idea of ordering a custom dial with my own logo design.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 3 жыл бұрын
These are interesting concerns Joel. Let me try to answer some. firstly the flat dial, yes the black dial is flat but to me it looked good especially the lume. The other dials they offer like the green one I fitted have raised round indices that give it that more premium look. I will be writing my blog for the site on the watch soon and will take some photos of the case. For me the finish was good, the polished detail on the lug which is divided by the brushing gives an interesting contrast and actually makes it appear narrower. Also the way the lugs drop so it fits to the wrist better. Again this is my opinion but I think its well thought out from a company who clearly are watch lovers / modders. Many generic brands out there like Pagani Design do not think about this end of aesthetics. For a day date you would need a NH36 (I think) or similar. I am sure they are available to purchase for other companies wanting to use them. I know that DIY Watch Club will be reading the comments so they might actually pick up on this one. I will also email them about custom logo design on a dial to see how feasible this could be. Personally I think it would be quite a challenge as you need a pad printer and dies to do such a job well. Thank you for watching.

On the black dial yes but on the green they are spot on. It’s all about how the movement sits in the plastic ring in the case . I took my eye off the ball when filming and many comments below told me ! Fortunately to adjust its simple.

@@kostek4430 it’s easy to line up as it’s all about the movement ring and now accurate you get that into the case. You can easily be off by 1mm or less either way. In camera and with my eyes it’s not always easy for me to tell until afterwards. I will be posting photos soon on a blog on my site so we can take a better look then to see. Thanks all the same. I am wearing the green now hence knowing that looks lined up

I found them a couple of weeks ago, I was searching for someone who could sell me a movement (or a total watch) in loose parts for me to assemble the entire thing. Along with some instructions of course. But I guess there's not a huge market for such a thing. It seems like they're more about using well known movements and have you mix and match dials and cases to create your own style of watch. Which is also cool, but not what I was looking for. Any chance there are companies that do sell movements that have to be completely assembled first? I mean, especialliy with the SN35(A) I could buy any inexpensive (automatic) watch and search for some instructional videos on that.

I have never seen a movement for sale in parts. Manufacturers would not do this. Too small a market but no warranty. Equally most movements are assembled by machines now

Green dial is Better. Black dial @ 6 o'clock & 9 o'clock markings are bit off. The Second hand arrow head is opposite. Has It got a Screw in Crown? Have U regulated the movement? Cheers from Down Under.

The dial was not off it was my fitting of the chapter ring which I remedied when fitting the green dial. Yes it has a screw down crown. I always regulate if they need it but can’t remember on this watch without watching the video again. A lot of water under the bridge since filming this one.

Thank you Peter. The accuracy is good.I should have showed on the TG but I forgot. Other reviewers do though. The NH35 movement is a solid well used movement with hacking and hand winding. Many Seiko fans swap their 7S26 out of their SKX etc to use the NH35/36 movement because of all its complications for the price. Mine is running at around + 6 seconds a day.

I have a question for you. I have an old Wittnauer watch that is very dear to me (it's my dad's), and the case it totally buggered. I can't screw the back on and there are notches in the case that prevent the automatic movement from....well....moving! The watch works perfectly fine when winding manually. Can it be possible to find an newer watch case to fit the movement, and if so, how do I measure to find a good fit? Is it simply a matter of finding a case to house the movement number? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't show the most important part of building : how to swap the rotor...it is very delicate part of watch. Anyway the total price of this watch kit it Is not so cheap considering that no everyone can build it accurately. The price should be more low in my opinion.

A watch is a bunch of oils and grease that tells time while degrading and turning into glue... so that is where you start buying tooling and consumables... haveing a mainspring winder is also nice if you don't want to buy new springs for everything or hand winding (ain't nobody got time for that) otherwise it is hard to check out the actual power source of a watch.

Looks really good. Have you considered testing the water resistance. Even if you don't have the proper kit just trying submerging in water for a period of time, or go swimming in it. Whilst that would not validate the 200m resistance if it failed in a shallower depth it would at least provide more insight to the review. I know that could ruin the watch but if its a free one provided for the review there is nothing lost to yourself.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. I keep saying to myself I need a pressure tester but put it off. A lot of stuff I work on is vintage and you cant always replace crown gaskets so pressure testing is not worth it. However on a project like this video it would have been interesting. As the gasket is new and I did grease it I am sure the water proofing is sufficient. I never shower or swim with any watch old or new.

Hey Mike, do you fancy a go at a couple of Slava tanks? One only works upside down but holds super time, the other the keyless works spring I suspect has sproinged itself out of the little channel as it doesn't wind and seems locked into time setting mode. Got donors for spares and will even include couple for yourself to play about with and build up a couple decent ones for your collection, if you could let me know how much per watch you would charge would be super happy as I have recently been diagnosed with glaucoma hence my deteriorating eyesight. If not yourself could you ask in your facebook group perhaps? Cheers m8 :D

Great video Mike. It's certainly something for a beginner like me. Two things I'd like, to be able to choose a dial logo. Not crazy about the big D and the lettering underneath. I also noticed, or was it the angle, the chapter ring and marker at 12 were well lined up on the black dial but at 6 it looked like it was off by a mile! The green dial looked much more accurately lined up. Really appreciate this video! Thank you!! P.S. Forgot to say, there's a cup of coffee coming to you next week! And just wondering. Did you try the movement on the timegrapher? Just curious about the accuracy.
