A couple viewers have expressed concern that kids were "sanding carbon" in the video without masks. I thought this would be obvious, but I just want to point out that they were: 1, wet sanding (if you can call it sanding) 2, were sanding clear coat, not carbon 3, were doing it for a few seconds just for the shot. No children were harmed in the making of this video.

Lots to love here: You sanded down the whole frame with walnut shells ( I love weight weenie stuff) Repaired the carbon yourself (we need more people that do this) I love the way you included your kids (I want to be a father like this someday) Only thing I would have done differently is left the frame raw carbon with a few intricate painted decals and clear coat (but the color is very nice, just not what I would do if I sanded down my carbon frame) I love the build and love the channel!

Good experiment with carbon repair and a learning experience. Do you think you would do a carbon repair again to restore a used frame?
@BuildaBetterBike2 жыл бұрын
absolutely. I'd do some things differently next time though

Nice paint job! love from philippines!

I think you shoudn't have fully striped the paint. In the final paint job there are so many imperferctions still visible. Now it looks like a fake Cannondale. And that's a shame because all the other work and the chosen parts are excellent. I would only have striped the paint beyond the damaged area.

as a weight weenie, I disagree, leave no gram unshaved!

Could've been saved by sanding the primer, then primer again, then sand until it's smooth.

I agree I would have only repaired the seat tube and sanded and painted it black and graphics. The end results aren’t worth all the effort. Also you chose such a difficult color to shoot. After watching your videos I would also recommend using bolts as plugs for threaded bosses.

Hi sorry if I missed it in the video, is there a reason you can't use paint strippers on carbon? Will it eat the epoxy as well?
@iancai52 жыл бұрын
Yep! It will destroy the epoxy

Genuine question incoming. How many people run their stem above their steerer tube? I am too paranoid to ever even come within a 0.250" of the top of the steerer.
@BuildaBetterBike2 жыл бұрын
I've seen stems do more damage than steer tubes (assuming it's the potential damage you're concerned about)

Man.. that takes time to remove paint by sanding it Why won't you use special paint remover in gel format? I'm watching guy's fixing metal car models,they use it and paint is gone in minutes! Amazing build and respect for all the effort 👊🔥

You cannot use chemical paint stripper in carbon. You don't know what effect it will have on the resin that holds the carbon fibers together.

Probably going to need a stem with less stack height as your fork steerer is too short for this setup.

Apparently, cherry pits is the best blasting media for stripping paint from carbon frames. See ETOE channel, he made a video about it.

Hey man I was just wondering if you could print for me specialized decals. I am not fortunate enough to get access to these kind of machines😄... It is not for now, but I might do a bike build with a custom paintjob. I would be a nice option for me, really!

as a painter, definitely shouldn't have removed all the paint from the entire frame. All you have to do is wet sand it smooth with some 320 grit. Only needed to worry about removing the paint on the repair area.
