AJ is a gem in the community. Taught me how to make ferments for my garden to save myself some cash and didn't ask for a thing in return. As a result, I'll always buy my Kashi from them instead of making my own.

Started my second all-BAS soil/inputs grow this weekend, this time in the Earthbox. After amending with Craft Blend, Gnarly Barley, BAS worm castings and Growing Organic kashi, I lifted the mulch cover after 48 hrs and it is TEEMING with beneficial life! This is going to be a good run....

Hey I wanted to shout out on some recent ferment experience. I have one 5 gallon bucket ferment that uses rain water, about two big handfuls of yard waste and rabbit/chicken manure compost, 4 large aloe leaves and the other plant material is pruning and clipping material from cannabis along with whole harvested male cannabis plants, flower trim and de-flowered moms. I watered that in about 4 ounces to a gallon and flipped to flower the next day. The explosive growth in just over 24 hours. I know there is a flower stretch but I have never seen this strain jump so much. Man it is killer!

Thank you both!! This was a great conversation - I've got a question that's been burning at me for a long time that I can't find an answer to: The major thing I've read that makes compost, vermicompost, compost teas, etc. so beneficial for grows is that the process is strictly aerobic so that you're selecting for the beneficial microbes. Ferments are strictly anaerobic and I've observed them under my microscope to produce primarily problematic bacteria (corkscrew shapes) and mold-related fungi. Are ferments used specifically for nutrients and their bio-availability, or are there particular microbes that are important as well? Could ferments be improved if they are made in aerobic conditions? I've tried fermenting comfrey due to its deep tap root and ability to sequester micronutrients, but haven't yet created a product that seems appropriate for my plants.
@dragoniousmaximus7304
@dragoniousmaximus7304 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have a microscope but the KNF inputs I make, like the FPJ parsley, LAB and OHN work well for me in veg. In flower I have FFJ made from old brown apple bananas and the LAB.
@alexandereyre1148
@alexandereyre1148 2 жыл бұрын
@@dragoniousmaximus7304 Do you have any particular reasoning for using them? I understand that they do work, and I've used them in the past in an outdoor vegetable grow with success (or at least no noticeable negative effects), but don't want to bring them inside yet. I suppose I'm mainly curious about ferments that do not get any initial microbial inputs and/or go anaerobic. If they do produce problem microbes, I can see them be improved either through aeration in a process similar to compost tea, sterilization, or microbial inoculation. I could also be completely wrong that the microbes present are potentially bad, but I'm positive they are in abundance.
@alexandereyre1148
@alexandereyre1148 2 жыл бұрын
I wanted to follow up as I did some research + experiments. Through reading into the KNF methods, I was reminded that the distinction between good/bad microbes is relative to the composition within the soil. Certainly there are strictly good/bad microbes, but most of the community lies somewhere in between. The biggest distinction is the size of the population and subsequent effects at large population size. However, in proper soil this should rarely be the case unless there is a disturbance event. I did an experiment with some misc vegetable seeds (radish + lettuce b/c they grow fast) in an inert coco + perlite medium. Once they were established seedlings (~20 of each for each condition), I treated them with a very healthy thermophilic compost (measured under microscope), kombucha (closest thing to an active ferment I have on hand), kashi blend (heavily fermented to act as compost enhancer), and water. I had ~95% health in the compost, ~80% in water, ~80% in the kombucha, and ~5% in the kashi blend. The kashi blend threw up a lot of molds and such, which the soil was not prepared to process as I've seen worms and the liking happily do. The plants gradually died, it was not rapid or resembled over/under watering. I don't think the kombucha did anything significant relative to the water, but the compost showed remarkable improvement of life and plant appearance, presumably due to the selection of aerobic organisms thus an initial improvement of the soil health. Unfortunately, I did not take notes. I'd like to perform the same experiment with more refined methods and select #'s of seedlings that would inform statistical significance to make any real claim. I'd also like to do the same experiment using well established soil. Please don't take any conclusions from this or let it change your opinion of products. :)

I really love the BAS products I've tried. Especially your "Craft Blend" mixture. Several other products have been the best I've acquired anywhere. IDK about Bokashi blend, the green plastic inner bag, with the cotton outer bag shown..?! I used maybe a half handful, resealed the green bag, and put inside the outer white cotton bag. 2-3 months later I was going to use it again, but luckily looked inside the bag first. Many different creatures crawling around that I've never seen locally, or in any product I've ever had..?! They had to have come from the Bokashi blend, and since never hearing that beneficial insects may grow in Bokashi, I immediately sealed it up and took it outside into the dumpster. Never saw those strange insects again, or what/where/how this happens..?! Really love everything I've tried from BAS, but this was a mystery I've never heard of, or had anyone else I can find. Do you know what may have happened, Jeremy..?! Any help would be highly appreciated!. Have a great Turkey Day weekend, BAS and everyone in the community!👍💯🙏✌️

All of this anecdotal evidence (my own, my friends and the/this community) for the benefits of ferments, particularly wrt the "loudness" of the volatiles makes the scientist in me wish i could find a way to quantify these effects. Terpene concentration, while obviously factorial, doesn't seem to capture this quality appropriately. Maybe if you could measure the viscosity or sheer stress for sublimation on the flower surface layer, i dunno. Wish i had a fully equipped lab that i could cut sick in without oversight.

Thanks for the great video. I have a question and I hope it gets answered in one of the FAQ. So I’m currently running a 15 gal with BOS 3.0 soil. And I’m following the build a soil way but I don’t have worms. My plants are close to harvest and they look amazing (thanks you guys a lot for all the info) . My question is when I harvest my plants and re amend my soil with top dressing craft blend. Will those nutrients I top dress makes there way down into the soil and into the roots of the plant without worms? Sorry if it’s a stupid question but I don’t have worms right now, and I’m trying to keep my grow perpetual. I will eventually get worms but not this month lol.
