With the state of the world today I think you've made a wise decision in your choice of build. Fascinating seeing it come together. Great engineering.

If you ever need to use the winch from the front, you can always pay out the cable and route it under the vehicle to the front and use the winch that way. If you decide to do something like this I recommend welding a mount on the center bottom of the front bumper to mount a shackle that you can route the cable through as a fairlead.
@BuilderCreator2 жыл бұрын
I have been thinking through this same scenario. Possibly a wide pulley with a built in fairlead that plugs into the receiver. There will also be a "chin roller" (video coming) at the front bumper to protect the fiberglass "boat hull" body work on the lower side of the cab, like you used to see on old WWII half tracks. This would act as a second fairlead should you have to attach the cable high.

Tips. When building an off road vehicle. The further off road and the further away from civilisation the vehicle will go the more generic and redundant you want it to be. You want things like brake and fuel lines to be well protected from impacts with stones and branches and junk that may get flung up into them. You also want to avoid them collecting mud and small stones and sand that will rust out something or puncture the lines. Avoid putting them in places where they can get cut or damage if something else fails. You also will want to build in solid toeing, tie down and jacking points at all four corners and in front of and behind each wheel and in between these places. Winches just one winch at the front may be enough if there’s more than one vehicle on the trip but if you’re solo you will want two or the ability to move the winch from front to back or even away from the vehicle. You will want snatch blocks and a come along also and a sand anchor with rock wedge capability. Avoid exotic and custom parts in any component that can leave you stranded.

nice work! A few notes: Make sure the winch is isolatable in a locked location, there has been a few instances in my area of people wrapping the cable around the car and shorting the winch on, essentially crushing the vehicle when its un-attended. You may want to look into dyneema rope, swapped to it on my winch and will never look back, so much easier to handle, so much lighter and (at least for me) so much easier to repair. its also safer as it tends to just fall to the ground when it snaps instead to slicing people in half... The rear mounted winch make sense, particulery for an RV
@BuilderCreator2 жыл бұрын
Yeah! I will probably replace the cable with a synthetic once it's on the road and my money is not all going to building materials. Ha!

@@BuilderCreator I never had any trouble with the generic stuff off ebay. even dead dragged a fully loaded 60 series landcruiser up a rocky hill with it without damage. the only thing that damaged it was accidently hitting it with the chainsaw after dragging a tree out of the ground.

I have always installed my atv winches in the back . Witching from the front is hard on front end parts, blocks cooling, as weight to steering effort, makes towing other dead wheelers a pain as you have to run the cable underneath the bike.

Is the winch connected to the subframe only by these little 4 bolts on the box? In my opinion the winch should be connected directly to the main frame
@BuilderCreator2 жыл бұрын
No, six more (larger) bolts on the bottom and back. The camera just wouldn't fit in the 2 inches behind it!

How are you going to get up a steep gradient if you need to pull yourself up. Perhaps a winch at the front as well.
@BuilderCreator2 жыл бұрын
As I said, if its that steep perhaps you shouldn't be going that route? Plus there will be a "boat hull" style chin on the front, making the winch placement a problem.
@weedletrainer342 жыл бұрын
Double check the shear strength values on those stainless bolts you used for the winch cradle. They look to be 5/16 or 3/8? Not sure if you’ll have much factor of safety in there although that may be the same size fastener the winch calls for. Just worried with such a large vehicle, a good yank could cause some problems.
@BuilderCreator2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I didn't show the 4 larger bolts on the bottom and 2 on the back. No room for a camera back there.
