First Fire in the Rumford Fireplace | CABIN BUILD | PIONEER | OFF GRID

The search continues for the final rock to cap the chimney. Then in preparation for the first fire, Peter elevates trees over the chimney (using modern safety equipment) He spends the following morning in the blacksmith shop making fire place tools. The first of many fires is then lit in the fireplace.

You've chosen the right kind of fireplace, being a Lord Rumford, it throws the most heat. Enjoy, I built my own chimney and Rumford and it has been wonderful watching the flames for hours, dreaming.

Fireplace turned out great. Rumfords like tall longer wood length teepee fires built just like you did on the floor. When you want heat. The tall fires take advantage of the draft in the tall fire box and follow the standing wood right up it’s length. Be careful though the fireplace will blast you out of the cabin. The rumfords are the best. For cooking your fire would work better. And I know you are breaking the fireplace in. Going to be best friend when it’s winter.

My cousin was a master brick mason. We were his last job before he retired. We helped him build a 4 ft and 5ft rumsford fireplaces and a brick oven next to the 5 ft one. Once you break in the rumford the other guy was right about setting your wood on end against the back wall to really use it correctly. Once the room is hot or your cooking let it die down. Rumford fireplaces are dramatic and are designed to kick the heat into the room. The reason I checked out your video was because I saw rumford. I subscribed, very good channel.

It’s very elemental, not only the symbolic hearth of home and sustenance, but literally what will keep you alive! Another thing we have in common, I am an arborist as well. Seems that trees and stones go together.

I can go right, at bottom of my hill, along hood Canal south shore, or straight straight an north along North Shore. I'm in between two Indian casinos an sometimes go to breakfast with friends. Across street from breakfast is Indian pot shop! I live next to wide/flat, well used game trail to creek an only water supply for local area. 2 nights ago Mt. lion run over my roofs, (for real!) Mom cat pooped outside my window at 3:00am for a bountry for her kittens (too not go down hillside to 101)! But now kittens are teenagers, pushing past mom's authority. So right past her markings they use my roof as toy sometime! From side they jump up on water table, an up onto wood kindling box in rear. Yeah, I live in great region, scuba diving in San Juan Islands, around octopus, Orcas an all the rest! Great times an great stories! Check this: at very tip of America is an island an Lighthouse, at top of hero straights. This island is basalt vertical rock wall cliff rock formation, 600 ft deep! Every thing moves an turns on that corner from Orcas to submarines, huge Lin Cod fish lay on outcropping on that straight vertical wall, an let current bring them chow. About 60ft ft just south of the corner of America, part of the wall fell off, leaving a room with ceiling an two walls just like in your house but under water. But there is No Floor, only straight down depth for 540ft.. At 300ft is a black line, limiting any vision, but you know there is 300ft below that black line. Scariest place I've even been. (not just depth, but what might pass in front of you) With ceiling you can see yourself rise an fall inches in depth with every breath. But then a huge lin cod passes in front of you, or a pod of killer whales. An they know your there with all air bubbles! (An I've seen them be savage, top of the food chain killers), but I also seen them close up in middle of pod of 5 for almost an hour an they waited their turn for affection! Yeah, I live in amazing place! My diving partner passed, so I'm the only one that knows that roof off/room on the very NW corner of America!

Thanks Margaret! That means a lot! My father volunteered for underwater demolitions teams (UDT). So I was raised different than most, an in water before I could walk! I rescued my first wild animal, Bob cat, at 12! I walked into mt lion den an won over 200lb male Over with affection, same as orcas! I spent nite in middle of huge elk hurd! I measured worlds largest octopus for marine Labs! I've got 34 black bear on game cameras! Yeah, my life has been an adventure! My game trail to water is amazing at 20"+ wide, packed hard, I got 169 game pictures in 5 days! Very Cool!

My grandfather built a fireplace like that @ 80 years ago, just as I was born. We burned @ 4.5 cords of wood per year to keep the house warm. Then @ 60 years ago, a old fellow who had been building fireplaces came along and measured it up. He bricked it up 3 coarse from the bottom, filled the base with sand and put a steel plate with glass doors across the front and cut our firewood to less that one cord per year. He also cut a hole in the wall and fed 4" of air in to the fire from outside. You have built a beautiful, authentic hot air vacuum cleaner, sucking all the heat out of the house and cold air in every crack from outside.

We live off the grid here in New Zealand and have gone through our first winter with no fireplace. It’s spring here now and finally the wood burner is in. The mistake we made was mounting our solar panels to the roof without first considering where the flue for the fire would go through, spacing of the rafters etc. Hubby said he was getting too old to nut it out himself, so trying to get tradies out here was a major hassle. Living remotely is both a blessing and a curse. I’m cranking up the fire even though I have to have every door and window open. I’m making up for lost time. Oh the joy of been warm. I too enjoyed your video on the garden and chill store. I have the perfect place where the bank behind our cabin has been dug out when our building platform was prepared. Because this is New Zealand my cool store will be a Hobbit style cob cabin, with a living roof. It will blend in nicely into the native New Zealand bush. I am collecting the clay as l dig out our new vegetable garden. Our neighbours are providing the wine bottles. It’s a sacrifice they are happy to make. Bloody decent of them to help 🤣🤣🤣.

We have a cabin in a hollow that is fairly open. The smoke from the flu is always filling that little valley with smoke no matter what time of year or weather condition. We just can't get draft to get rid of the smoke. Always just follows the streem.
