In this video I build a 3 point log boom out of a tractor trailer hitch receiver.
I wanted to build a tractor implement that wasn't commercially available so I built my own.

I agree, and another great safety modification would be to build a set of wheel spacers for the rear wheels to move them farther apart. Three inch spacers would probably be adequate for your tractor. I operate a 23 HP John Deere tractor on a steep hill and I put six inch spacers on it plus calcium chloride (or beet juice) in the rear tires to increase weight and lower the center of gravity. It definitely puts more strain on the axles and wheel bearings so I keep a close eye on it and operate at low speeds.

What you really want to do is weld a couple of chains hanging just under your winch. Once you reel your log all the way in, you can hang the log on your pair of chains--- and then loosen some slack in your winch line--- that way, when you're towing it, all of your pulling wear goes onto the chains-- and your winch only gets used when you need it for lifting, and not when you're towing the logs.

I don't see the point of the winch because you can raise and lower your hydraulics you lower it down take up the slack pull it up in the air. Instead of a winch and cable put a set of tongs on there. That's what I did I pull up I got it mounted on my bail spear which is way heavier duty than that three-point adapter. I just welded chain clevis on my Bell spear
@calholli
@calholli 8 ะฐะน ะฑาฑั€ั‹ะฝ
@@cowbdave99 Yeah, I agree. The winch is still useful for things that you can't really get close to I guess. But he should be using a chain to lift and drag it- by using the hydraulics.

Weld some chain hooks lower on the winch frame, use a choker chain on the log. When you get it winched in, raise your 3pt to bring it all the way in, then lower the 3pt, attach the choker to the hook, and raise the 3pt. You'll now be towing from a lower center of gravity and you'll be towing on the chain instead of your winch cable . With hooks on either side and 2 chokers, you could tow a couple smaller logs out at a time.

This project is very representative of what most farmers do when they need something to get the job done. Find something that you can make work and then make the modifications to make it happen. I feel that people get lost in the hype of having perfect projects made with ideal equipment and materials. Making due with what you have to make your life better/ easier is really the name of the game.

Your caution on tractor use is priceless. My neighbor who had been farming all his life didn't come in for dinner one night and his family went out to the field where he had been working and they found him passed away at the back of the tractor with one of his legs ripped off by the power take off assembly. One can never be too careful when operating machinery.

Mike you could use a small grapple hook on 2 feet of chain to handle the load instead of letting the cable take all the weight use the winch to get the log where you need it to hang then use the grapple and chain to take the load weld a big d shackle just below the front of the winch then winch up to height hook grapple around the tree then put chain in d shackle and lower cable to relieve the weight it will save on breaking winches and stretching and breaking wire rope love the build more drum solo's cheers from down under

Have you thought of Fabricating a "Spiked" Hitch Plate to puncture the end of the log to keep it steady? A 2" square Tube (or whatever size your Receiver is) with a 4"ร—4" plate with four 3" Steel Spikes would keep the end of the Log in place without having to use Ratchet straps.

Mike, love your stuff! I have an old 4 x 4 Ford (I think Yanmar motor), about 24 hp, 2 cyl. I built an A frame to pull and lift cars, plus a neighbor had a great portable saw mill. I was dragging down 30 to 40 inch oak, ash and pine trees 21 foot long, and was having a big problem with it doing "wheelies". I just added a chain connected directly to the draw bar, and connected it to the bottom of the log (like on the loop you use to lift it). All the difference in the world when it is pulling from down low and not up high. Did the same things when pulling cars or truck. Never had that problem again. If you are going to pull longer logs, this will solve your problem.

Quite a few people have been crushed under a tractor. All the operator's manuals warn against pulling a load with anything other than the lower lift links. Those links are attached below the axle, the tendency is to push the front end down. Pulling from a point a foot or two above the axle is tempting the devil. There are tractor skidding attachments that use chain type chokers, there are several grab hooks at the lower level. They use the winch to move and lift the log. Then lower the log and catch the tail of the choker in one of the hooks. Safer and allows skidding several smaller logs in one turn. Going uphill makes matters worse. One guy might get away with being fast on the clutch, the next guy might be dead before lunch.
@billd.akaevylaz754
@billd.akaevylaz754 ะ–ั‹ะป ะฑาฑั€ั‹ะฝ
I wouldnโ€™t be too worried about the tow point being above the axle. It looks like you are only pulling 1 log at a time, and you seem to keep your head out of your rear end while doing things that might be a bit higher on the danger scale. However, I do agree with Chuck about the choker chain. Using the winch to move the log into position, and then pulling with a chain will drastically reduce the wear and tear on your winch and, more importantly, that little bitty cable.

Your video made me realize that I always used the front loader to lift the log/tree. Then I would go in reverse. This gave me a good view of the butt end if I needed to make an adjustment to avoid hitting a stump or some other object. I was used to going in reverse when using the bucket because if you were using the bucket to go into a pile of something you had to go in reverse half the time anyway. I had a neighbor that worked in the woods a lot during colder weather. He used a 2 wheel drive Leyland tractor and most of the time he skidded with the front wheels off the ground. He had a way he hitched that kept the load just inside the rear wheels and if the load hit something that might make it go over backwards the tractor was stopped by a bar that was over the logs. This bar would hit the load and prevent the tractor from going any further. Entertaining to watch, with just enough scare factor.

Another enjoyable build video Mike. Thanks. Good advice about tipping tractors..there were quite a few fatalities round our way in my dad's childhood. Eventually all tractors for commercial use had to have at least a single hoop or a cab...tractor cab production became a viable business until the manufacturers started offering tractors with cabs as standard.

I was just thinking about doing something similar to this with a carry all. It would take a bit more welding, but I figured I could get something underneath the log and take some stress off the boom, lower the weight. You could probably do the same thing though an attachment where the receiver is. Something to think about.

@MikeFestiva, I think I would create a V-shaped and toothed saddle for the 2โ€ receiverโ€ฆjust replaces the trailer ballโ€ฆso the the log rests in the V and is carried while towing by the hydraulics rather than the winch. You could put a pulley down low by the receiver so that the winch pulls the log FORWARD and DOWN into the V-notch, so the log doesnโ€™t shift too much while towing.

Thanks for posting. Great project. Iโ€™m surprised you donโ€™t use a logging arch more. Iโ€™ve pulled out some 16 and 18โ€™ trees out of my bush with an old Honda 400 quad. I use a winch mounted on the front to a turning pulley on the back of the arch. After raising the log between the wheels I let it down to rest on chains front and back. No dirt on the bark, no dragging, pretty simple build with minimal materials and a couple of tires on rims. I use a 4โ€ x 10โ€™ post between the arch and my simple hitch. Cheers.
