Building a big shelf. Partly recycled lumber, just brad nailed together. Quick, simple and cheap.
@EdgarHilton10 жыл бұрын
Nice but.... Don't you want to put some diagonals? At least one or two wires for strength. I broke out onto a sweat when I saw you climb onto your shelves...
@CameronLienhart10 жыл бұрын
Edgar Hilton It's fine. There is more than enough lumber, glue, and nails to keep that shelf stable.
@EdgarHilton10 жыл бұрын
***** stable yes. Sturdy I'm not so sure. Obviously it depends on the type of usage, but as a mechanical engineer, a transverse load (for example pulling out heavy lumber from a higher shelf) when the shelves are fully loaded makes me a bit squeamish. Two guide wires at 45 degree angles from corner to corner would make this perfect in my mind.
@aserta10 жыл бұрын
Edgar Hilton The weight is transferred down not sideways. Also this is just for storage. It's not like he's gonna have tea up there every morning you know.
@EdgarHilton10 жыл бұрын
aserta yes but what about tacos? All good woodworker needs a nice quiet corner to eat tacos.

I'm more than a little disappointed by the fact that your ladder is made of... *gasp* ...aluminum.

Great shelf build! Whenever I build something it ends up being overbuilt and way too heavy. However, seeing you build the shelf this way helped to finally convince me to not overbuild my shelf like I usually do.

I like how I can sit here sipping on coffee watching someone else work... and no one is trying to yell at me or make me feel guilty :) Well, guess I'd better get in the shop!

Nice shop space Matthias. Looks like you could add a second floor for storage
@boldger1310 жыл бұрын
I agree.
@Nouruth10 жыл бұрын
Or just add few horizontal beams and have a 2x4 plank storage there
@matthiasburger231510 жыл бұрын
Very good idea! The construction of a platform in the rear part would be a great project. Or a gallery along three sides with hammocks in between for relaxing and thinking... A sign of the great influence of Matthias Wandel: the whole green-wooden-woodworking-machines-community is devotedly planning the furnishing of his garage.

Are you moving out of your basement, and into a new shop?
@christianbuzio946810 жыл бұрын
Hi Mathias I am from Italy and very curious about how much does it cost to rent a place like yours. Here I spent for an year of rent € 12.000 that are more or less 14/15.000 dollars. I have tried to make some of the projects you and other guys share on internet but in Italy wood is so expensive that it would cost less buying a new one furniture! 20 mm osb costs for evry mtrsquare 18 dollars for low quality, 22 to 25 dollars the best quality! In italy do woodwork is very expensive. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us poor wannabe woodworkers ;-) Actualy I wood be an AmericanWannaBeWoodworker, at least I would have money enough to try to become a better one. Sorry for funny english Chris, Milano, Italy

Any taller and you would have needed to put a step ladder on top of your ladder to get up there. lol

Does anyone remember these fantastic tools we used to have back in the old days ... hammers? Where's the blood and swearing that would usually go into a project like this?

In the past and for good reason. Jokes aside i actually really enjoy hammering nails

@hotrodmobile10 жыл бұрын
I would add a couple of diagonal struts for stability under big load.
@richb31310 жыл бұрын
There is a design problem. The horizontal braces that support the shelves either need to be screwed in place or supported in some other fashion. The shear strength of that glue joint and brads will fail, it is only a matter of time. Give yourself some peace of mind and either screw or through bolt those braces.
@wyssmaster5 жыл бұрын
The joint is face grain to face grain, which is stronger than the wood itself.
@jimlee54010 жыл бұрын
Did you move into a bigger shop? Looks hard to heat such a space in ON?
@sidgar110 жыл бұрын
Plus, the corrugated metal walls won't keep in any heat but just radiate it away. Still, jealous of that workspace!
@sampsani10 жыл бұрын
is it even safe to use a woodstove in there just because the sawdust in the air is really flammable and theres so much to burn all the machines and lumber
@1998CBR60010 жыл бұрын
Are you concerned about lateral forces on it ? What size brad nails did you use ? 18 ga ?

No movie, TV series, music videos etc... the best thing to watch in the entire universe is Matthias Wandel. WIsh he produced a video once a day...
@freewoodencrosses10 жыл бұрын
I have never seen you use a chop saw?. Do you have one?, just curious. You don't mention the length of the boards . It looks like the 2X4s are 8 ft and the garage must be 16 ft high... WOW great garage. BTW . Did you cut the scraps with your sawmill?
@HostileHST10 жыл бұрын
Matthias, have you seen murmelwelt's marble machine? If you haven't, I think you'd really get a kick out of it. Might want to turn the sound down if that kind of music isn't your thing, but still worth taking a look.

I always wondered when you would buy an air Nail Gun! But now I kind of miss your speed hammering skills ;)
@matthiaswandel10 жыл бұрын
I had that nail gun for a while (used it in a video two years ago). But I found it in a dumpster, so no, I did not buy one.
@jim_no_rulers10 жыл бұрын
Matthias Wandel I bought what looks to be the same one from HD on sale for $50, with a case/nails/safety glasses. I thought I had the best deal in town... of course then I tried it and it doesn't shoot. I tossed the receipt so I'm stuck with it now.. atleast I've gotten a lot of use out of the glasses lol..

Great video. I am needing a shelf soon. Are the brads there to hold on the glue? I assume the glue will stay on permanently when it dries? I know nothing about wood working.
@bowtiethirteentwenty862710 жыл бұрын
The glue and brads are both attachment methods. :)
@seigeengine10 жыл бұрын
Yes, the brads are basically little nails that hold the wood together as the glue cures. Once cured almost all the strength comes from the glue bonding the wood, rather than the brads.
@Bobany9 жыл бұрын
seigeengine Don't forget the strenght of love overcomes all forces, and that's what really ties my hard wood together.

@smfield10 жыл бұрын
You really need a cross member to prevent vertical racking.
@kostiantyn.hermash17 күн бұрын
Why not to use long bolts 10 mm in diameter through supports instead of nails ? This would be stronger.
@matthiaswandel17 күн бұрын
Nails are cheaper and faster. And the bolt, having only one point of support, isn't stronger. Also it gives no support against racking, so actually quite weaker.
@christopherjude10 жыл бұрын

You need to install a lift in that garage.

This is one of my favorite channel. I like how you thinking and how you do stuff. In this project I would add some lateral reinforcement. I know there is maybe to much nails, but that is not enough when there is a load.

Diagonal braces?
@Joewalshe389 жыл бұрын
Will build similar. Undecided about bracing with a bit of 2" x 1" or any waste wood at rear, might store heavy boxes at bottom which would help stabilise it further.

@RieseRock10 жыл бұрын

@shenkerism10 жыл бұрын
I know you checked it with your L square, but perhaps you should have nailed the end cross-members first, checked it for square, and then nailed the center ones.
@shenkerism10 жыл бұрын
In hindsight, the wood you used was small enough and flexible enough, that shouldn't matter.
