Recently, I cheeked out and only changed pads on a 2012 tsx and a 2010 ES 350. Both cars had premature pad wear on one side. Both cars with the premature wear had slide pins that were gummed up with the purple stuff and did not slide well. Replacing the purple stuff with napa Sil-Glyde.🎉

@C-M-E5 ай бұрын
The Toyota race teams don't even get engines fully assembled, so don't feel bad. I like to think it's all part of their 'Just in Time' production method. They have a finite amount of parts at any given time to reduce waste and over head on the grand scale, and having engines for crate applications is seen as wasted space. Not saying right or wrong, as ten thousand parts in boxes aren't very efficient either, but when you have a few main engines that any of those shared parts can go to, it does make a semblance of sense from the parts bin side of things. Add: This is purely for the metallurgists-in-training out there, so most may not care. Oxidized aluminum is actually the native condition aluminum is found in (bauxite ore if you want to be Really pc) and is essentially a protective layer that naturally forms on raw/untreated material. You can strip it off of course and add a protective coating (anodizing, polymer-based surface treatments, paint, etc) but it really needs to be applied in a nearly hermetic environment to be truly effective, which as one might note, is a difficult environment to work in. Oxidized aluminum however is not a 'closed' surface and open to impurities like lubricant penetration, operating fluids and such, forming a second barrier surface of varying effectiveness. So in a high volume production environment, it's usually cost prohibitive to what most people will be willing to maintain on daily driver vehicles, so you won't see many topical surface treatments in the wild. It is more common in high performance applications. custom markets and aerospace for example.

Thank you, that was wonderful. I would love to hear that engine start for the first time. As for the bolts in the head, I once developed a QA tool for a certain EU car manufacturer. The way you check the tension of a bolt is measure the torque as you tension it again: as soon as the bolt starts moving, torque drops for a moment, and that's the value used for quality assessment. This is years ago when they sampled - with automated assembly this is automatically measured and registered for every single bolt.

I watch VGG and a takeaway I have from him telling me about valves is when you hit them, they resonate in the heads making a musical tone. He talks about a different kind of lifter but the concept is the same. The tone should all be the same when it's the same springs keepers and seats. If one sounds different, look why that guy is doing that. I know you know but people who are watching might not all know.
