Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are finally going to make it to the iron mine on a crazy mountain pass! This video took a long time to make as the path to the iron mine is quite treacherous but absolutely stunning as it winds up steep slopes and over amazing bridges!

Instead of turning the whole train around at the iron mine, you could decouple the engine and bring it around to the other end of the train.

yeah, like switch before and after the iron mine loading area to make a siding for the loco to runaround on, and a turntable to get the loco facing the right way. Though actually, mechanically I think backing downhill with the loco uphill of the rolling stock and just applying brakes might be the mechanically superior option since it keeps the links in tension
@Nick-ue7iw

@@Nick-ue7iw with modern knuckle couplers, yes, but for the chainlink & pin couplers like those used in the game any change in speed in the engine at the front while the links are slack means the cars are gonna newtons’ cradle pingpong around, leading to major shocks (much worse than a little constant tension, which is after all, what the links are already DESIGNED to take when being pulled on level ground). mechanically if you can only have the brakes one place, you want them uphill, and if you don’t have either a dedicated brakeman to keep the brakes on the most uphill car or modern brakes that apply uniformly across the the entire train from a single point, the “best of the worst” is to have the engine uphill.

Considering the iron cars will be left at the smelter it doesn't really make sense to switch the engine since he can just drop the cars in the shunt lane at the bottom without any real maneuvering. Save time and effort by saving time and effort. Unless there is a need to have the engine on the downslope end it's simpler to leave it as is

For that switch that's hanging off the rails on your bridge (at both 7:13 and 7:44 ), you could put a piece of the metalwork underneath it, to make it look like it's actually supported, as long as you don't put it out too far, it won't put down supports. That's also how you can make bridges that you could place tracks underneath.

30:50 narrow gauge railroads did often use steeper grades than standard gauge. in fact, some narrow gauge logging RR's had grades as steep as 10%!!! grades like these are what gave rise to the geared steam locomotives Heisler, Climax, and Shay (tho there is not currently a shay in the game). The geared locos are slow, but have a TON of pulling power and can traverse tighter curves than most other locomotives. at time of writing tho, they currently have a wheelslip bug when you go above around 60% regulator

For the steep grades and tight curves of a mountain line like this, best to save your cash and buy a Shay type loco like the Climax. Better traction with 4 driving axles instead of 2, and should handle curves better than other large engines.

Fun fact, Cass Scenic Railroad, WV, is home to the steepest non-electrified adhesion railway grade at 11.1%. They use shay locomotives that were built specifically for that kind of route and would haul lumber up and down the mountain. Its such a steep ascent that the first section to Whittaker has two switchbacks in order to get up the mountain. It's a very cool experience and I would definitely recommend taking the trip, especially in the fall. Also, the Climax and Heisler locomotives would probably be the best suited for the steeper grades.

Great job on the bridge to plateau section. From that flat to the smelter is all 3% max 20 deg turns. You’ll need that section to take both the iron to the smelter and from the smelter you’ll take rails to the coal mine. It took me A LOT of hours. This plateau is a four way junction for all that traffic - smelter-mines, planks and beam to the mines, coal out to the iron mill (but I’m doing a geared loco direct over the high saddle direct to the iron works :D. Love seeing other players find new ways, keep the videos coming! I got past the nasty climb by hugging the cliff instead of doing the cutting. I never went over 3.5%. Tip: build down. From mines not up. Then you never have steep sections to deal with. Re-railing only works on straight track. That’s why it didn’t pop.

It’s really not common in real life to have a big looping curve of track to turn the whole train and keep the loco facing in the “right” direction. Most locations (like the iron mine here) don’t have space for that so all you’d have would be a switch either end of the loading / unloading road and another line running parallel to that one. Here in the UK we’d call that a “run-round” just to put the loco on the other end of the train. If you really want to turn the loco another option you’ve got is to build what you call a Y (we’d call it a triangle) that just dead ends on two legs with enough room for the loco or indeed the whole train if you want to turn everything. Yes it requires some shunting rather than just running everything coupled together but I thought you liked shunting ;)

Made a similar route at 2.5% for most of it along that shelf to the mine… it was a pain. That shelf he started on where he said “I need to do a 6% before I end up at the coal mine”, my grade was at least 10 meters above it. I made it down to the top of the waterfall at 2% from there, and just ringed around the top to the smelter and linked up to my loop down to the smelter (inspired by him and Hyce on the latest play through) and put a spur from both directions to eventually build out to the coal mine. My advice to other new players wanting to start by using this route: start at the summit just a half mile short (1/4 of distance north between mine and smelter) of the iron mine and work down to the smelter from there to keep it even… you can go north to the smelter at -1.5% until you reach another large flat section, then go down -2-2.5% from there to the shelf he started at, and the waterfall beyond. You can also build the shelf out from the mine at 0% before needing a 0.5-1% up to that summit if you’re looking for “smooth” as a result… or, if you want a more real narrow gauge experience, do what kAN and Hyce did a couple months ago in their latest play through, depending on what experience you want! I might do the second from the west end of the mine for fun next, and just to make a loop for sitting back and having a cold drink when relaxing with friends and chatting. I like model railroads, what can I say? Heh… Also: build yourself some temp stone ballast ramps on the sides, so if you fall you don’t have to walk 2-3 miles to find a way back up… took me too long to start doing that.

Hey Kan, for mountain trains around the world its from 4 to 5%. 5% beaning the max. It's normally 4.5%. So enjoy your 6%.

You can put turn table at the entrance of the mine and hook up the engine behind (pushing) wood cars on the way in. That way (pushing) is little bit better going uphill than pulling the composition. When the engine pushes the load it is much easier for the engine than pulling itself and the reason for that is gravity (basically, engine is pinned down to the track by the cars in front of it to the rail by gravity and you need less sand to make the traction). So, on the way in, just put turn table, put the cars in the loading position, unhook the engine, turn it, hook the composition and go down to smelter with the engine in front. (same thing, engine is on the lower side and equals more friction because of the gravity and equals better braking power) Keeping the engine behind the composition on the uphill keeps the engine pinned to the rail (less sand). I was actually tested it, but it doesn't have to be a case with "betsy" because both betsy's are OP if you ask me. When I was testing it I was pulling and pushing uphill with different engines and i didn't use betsy 1 and 2 because they're overpowered in my opinion. (reason is obvious, it doesn't have necessary mass and size). I don't know what the devs planning to do with it but taking in fact that you can do all the job with just the small engine, spoils the game and puts the other engines a side unusable. Hope you understand what I'm telling ;) Anyway, great series and I can't wait to see delivering some material, if it possible width someone to help in some multiplayer series :D

My grandpa was a break man on a line that went to an iron mine. They had to use 3 switchbacks to make it level enough for a train to make it up the mountain.

if you look at mountain train lines through places like the Rockies and the Yukon you will see that lots of the line is raised on bridges and does kind of like a ledge hop around the mountains. There are also lots of tunnels and spots where the mountain was dug out to put down the track. It would be neat to see some of this implemented on your lines here. I know there is no way to alter the terrain, hopefully soon there will be, but the bridging along the mountain would be a good look I think.

Here's a buffer (stopper) idea for your sidings by the way. Place down the end of your track, then lay a track in reverse until the track makes and "X". Works pretty good unless you ram it at speed.

Took me like 5 hours to lay the iron mine track. I found it easier to lay the yard at the mine, then work my way down. Those hopper cars are heavy, even when empty.

i think everyone pretty much is taking that same way to the iron mine since it seems to be the best way. i actually did things backwards and started from the mine and got as far as the open flat area before stopping. at the iron mine i have a small yard with run around since it's only a one way in/one way out sorta place right now. i hope to have a 'betsy' at each of the bigger industries to shunt cars around and add them to the train (for now i just pull the original betsy around like a caboose and use the heisler for the heavy hauling).

you can do the entire route at 3% from the right starting point, and it stays 3% down to the smelter

hey, for the coal mine, couldn't you put a shunting line with two switches next to the loading/unloading line as well as a turntable to just turn around the engine and put in on the other end, rather than looping the entire train??

Sure. but for long trains that's going to be a pain in the balls. Long heavy trains don't like to stop once they're moving. And they really don't like the stop start stop start of shunting. For long heavy trains once your rolling preferably you don't want to stop again unless you absolutely have to. That's why i personally use turn around loops, all i have to do is go set a switch after i stop to offload and then when i'm done i can just go again and not need to stop until my next destination (usually the sawmill)

Khan you should look into switchbacks . I think they could really help with hills. Love that you're doing this series and I can't wait until you get some bigger engines

You could make like a shunting or a siding type thing at the flat section of the line (6:03). Love you bro💖💖 To re-rail the hoppers you could lay some temporary track near the original tack and then delete the temporary track and then re-rail it on the original track. Hope it works if you try it maybe.

when you said a six percent gradient I immediately thought of the Lickey Incline here in britain which is a 5% incline that trains today still need a banking engine to climb sometimes

At the iron mine you can make so that you decouple the locomotive, at the end on a turntable, turn around and than have track next to the first one so that you can come back and couple at the end of the train. Also at the flat section before the steep part you can build maybe a small sidding where you can have a helper engine sitting there, for when in need. For this type of steep track i recommend the geared engines (heisler, climax), they are slow speed but very big torque so they will keep on going.
