Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are finally going to use the big Heisler gear train to retrieve the iron ore from the iron mine and deliver it to the smelter! This trip has been a long time coming and I'm super excited to finally start producing some iron products at the smelter! ‪@DapperEcho‬

Fun fact: standing at the back of the train and directing the engineer is an actual practice, mostly on short lines
@callumhardy5098
@callumhardy5098 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the ‘guard’ would have a so called ‘brake van’ to stand in at the rear of the train, this would control the trains brakes and have direct communication to the driver usually by a bell or a whistle and red and green flags.

100% you need to keep betsy in service as a shunter at the main yard so you dont have to constantly use your big engines burning a lot of wood to shunt trains around.

I think you should build a run round loop at the iron mine, so you can go back down the mountain engine-first. Probably less chance of a derailment. EDIT: By "Run round loop", I mean a bypass line, not a full on balloon loop.

I work for a railroad with pretty steep grades in mountain territory. The ruling grade for my section is around 2.5%. I'm still a student engineer with less than a year experience operating and every night coming down the hills makes me nervous as all hell. Oh... regarding not using Betsy anymore, once you've got a larger line with a lot of loads going around you should start building small yards at each industry so you can just pick up or drop off cars as needed with the bigger locomotives, and then use the small porters to handle loading and unloading at each industry. This is a common practice on real-life lines with larger industries and at marshalling yards since it allows you to keep stuff moving.

For mountaining, modern trains use a type of brake called “dynamic braking” I can’t really go into detail since it’s been a while since I’ve talked about it, but basically it’s a limiter brake

Kan, something for consideration. You can possibly make some stub end tracks of finished product just to help make larger potential loads. Either solid consists of cars with matching loads or whole consists for certain industries to minimize loading times, or just to have a little more to bring with each load and leave at the facility that will utilize those resources

Oh, by the way, the new update MAY have replanted some of the trees. 😅 Recommend you walk your track or use a handcar to make sure your lines are still unobstructed. 😆 Also, removing trees is free now. 😁 Yep, wood money is cheap. How cheap? It grows on trees! Also, tree bug = termites.

I personally think that you should still use Betsy as a shunter ( kind of what she looks to be designed for) as it is a bit harder to do so with the larger engines, compared to shunters that can more easily, faster and more effectively move around yards and shunting lanes.

With this time lapse, I can see we took basically the exact same route to the Iron Mine. Except my max grade is 4% and I'm sticking with having to run around the train with a passing track at the mine in order to return down the way you came. At the plateau before the steep climb I mean. I went around the Smelter valley because I plan on building a Museum by the waterfall which is where my approach on the plateau meets where you went up to the Iron Mine. You should come check it out! You can actually see the difference of how I built track when I started and how I build track now! It's actually pretty cool!

I think it’s fun how imperfect and not user friendly this game is. I get it it’s in development, it’s fine. But I think it adds a massive sense of challenge and accomplishment when you do finish something. If you could lay track super easy and trains didn’t glitch you’d finish the game super quick.

Interesting point, but it depends on what you go for. People that need a experience and don't want to "waste" RL time, it's bad. But I still think that after some work you have a better feeling of accomplisment and so a slower game can be nice. I allways liked to look onto a complex but solved work, so I love a good time use, but a game should never feel like work. Maybe ( my opinion ) there is a point in live where you should invest your time to accomplish things in RL rather than in a game, depending on how you use your own life. I gamed a lot, but now I work on my own life. Long story short: it's allways a balance
