My dad drove in schedule 80 iron pipe that the foundry used for blowing sand to the molding machines. He just cut off the ends that were worn from the sand and drove them in the muck with a fence post driver (same style as you used for the T-posts, but with some extra mass) until he hit enough solid ground to hold it. Do this every 4 to 6 feet, and if you drive it in solid enough, it will hold for literally decades. I'm over 40 now, and the dock was built when I was 10 or 12. The treated wood decking rotted out a few years ago and has since been replaced, but the pipe foundation remains. He used C-channel runners the length of the dock and bolted some strips of wood to the top of that to nail the decking to. You have to be prepared to drive the pipe in hard, but it will last a lot longer than it really should. The neighbors did the same for their dock but didn't drive them into enough solid ground and their dock is falling apart. I'm not a structural engineer, but I am a very large man and our dock doesn't move much at all 30+ years after it was originally built, surviving through everything Indiana weather has thrown at the foundation of it anyway.

Love your idea and the fix you are considering. I'm sure that you will do research on bridges and may even talk with some folks who build docks in deep water on how they handle this case. If you look at some old WW2 videos the Navy CB's came up with a floating bridge that crossed rivers, etc. that was able to support heavy trucks. You could economically put one in on a smaller scale to support a zero turn mower, specially considering all the labor involved in sinking pylons and the such. Also it would be much easier to move if you had too without leaving permanent standing structures.

use prefab wood trusses or steel long span trusses. place one on each side and span between for desired traffic. only need concrete foundation on each side. trusses could be standard ones available or have a roof truss. you would tie the top together and a couple of places between. a local engineer could probably come up with a very simple design.

Do you know about "cantilever"? If you have a 22 foot beam, lay a 4x4 at the edge of the pond. Then stick the 22' beam out 10 feet. Park your tractor on the back end. Now you can get out your pond about ten feet. Figure out how to drive pilings, they can be treated 4x4. when you have enough pilings build out to it. Do the same from the other side or keep going in one direction.

Pound heavy posts into the ground, welding new ones on top until you hit solid resistance. Then do the same parallel. Weld a plate on top and you now have something that won't move and can handle the weight. It's how we build trail bridges over water that aren't invasive to landscape but can withstand.

It would most like be helpful to the ponds eco-system.

Easy solution a floating bridge. A 55 gallon barrel will support 800lbs so you can use plastic barrels with a access port to put some bolts in to the wood structure over top of them then sealed the access hole to make it air/water tight again. Cable anchors on ether side of the bridge to secure it in place and a flex connection between float sections. Say 4 barrels to a float section for 3,200 lb of buoyancy minus the structure weight should let you build something you can drive a tractor over if built right. It would also just be the plastic of the barrels in contact with the water for the most part unless you fully load the bridge but then the wood will be out of the water again once the weight is off. with the float idea you would be able to build the entire float section on land then just use a cable and redirect to use a truck/tractor/winch to pull it into the water and into place. You could also buy/build float sections but plastic barrels are cheap when all you care about is can they hold air and not leach toxic chemicals into the water. If you do build it remember to put up a no car/truck sign on it as you know someone will try to drive over it in something heavier then a UTV.

Opinions, and I know your going to get many, and that is the best way to make a decision, get a lot of opinions, then you and only you pick which will work best for you. That is what I did when I built our house as far as how to do the basement and not ever have a water problem. I got a lot of opinions, and picked what I thought was the right way. Thankfully for us it was the right way. 36 years now with a full basement and never a water problem. So here is what I think I would do. Oh, I like the idea of having the bridge where you were talking about. Not sure the length of your timbers you have left, or might have to go for longer ones maybe. Will it work to put the foundation you were already thinking about, say 1 or 2 foot from each side of the banks, would your timber span the center part, if so, then add to that, to reach where you want it to rest on the land part. Going a step farther with opinions, In my mind, I can see an arched bridge across to the other side, not just a flat bridge, arched with hand rails and mini light along the hand rail. It will be interesting to watch it being built. Take out that big tree that might cause a problem, but save that hard work clearing, and put that hard work into your bridge. Think about it, I'm sure they 're is a way to build it where you want it. If my ideal don't work, maybe someone else's will work, to put it where you want it, and still have it where you can see it at night with the lights on the hand rails. Good luck.

@markwhelan42214 жыл бұрын
One possibility to consider is to build a pontoon bridge. Strap 50 gal drums under a frame, float the frame into position, build the bridge on the floats. It is amazing just how much an empty 50 gal drum can support. Maybe, as you are in the USA, you may be able to use the square herbicide containers instead of 50 gal fuel drums ( I don't know what size they are there). BTW the easiest way to remove trees or branches from a pond is to turn them in the water and pull from the heavy end. This stops them snagging on things you can't see. Another tip in loading branches onto a trailer is to put the widest ones on the bottom with the heavy end facing where you are going to pull them from. Load all other branches on top of these then when you get to the tipping area all you need do is tie a rope to the bottom ones and something behind where you want them, then drive off. You can unload a trailer in just a few seconds this way. I used to have to load many trailers per day and this was the easiest method I found. I only started watching your channel on my "Smart TV" a few weeks ago, I love it. Until I understand my TV better I have to use the laptop to message you.

I know that you are going to get a bunch of "you should" comments, and perhaps mine qualifies as one. One thing that you might consider doing (although the expense up front might be a bit much) is renting a small excavator for a period of time. From what I understand you want to stay away from the "daily" or even "weekly" rental period because the cost is much higher. Consider perhaps a "monthly" rental. The key is to line up a couple (or few) projects that you can use the tool on without being constrained for time. A few days digging the "muck" out of that area would probably improve your pond (help with the algae growth) as well as enable you to go with your original plan. Again, my idea will take some thought and planning in order to make efficient use of renting the machine. I'm thinking that you could use it not only for cleaning out some of the muck, but also clearing up the other side a bit. With a 1 month rental you can take your time and not rush to get it done (one of my faults).
@gaguy24 жыл бұрын
Good idea, worth thinking about too. If not that how would contractor, do just the part you can't do, not by the hour, but finished like he wants it, for one "known price ", up front. That has work for me at times, rather than pay someone by the hour. Just another thought.

I need to get a pole in the middle there and start hammering it down and see how deep it goes, once you know how deep it is you just need to get some polls, they have pieces that go on the end that are kind of like a giant screw or a plate and you think those in the bottom then you make concrete rings and drop them around the pole. Make something adjustable, once you get it down there it might stink a little bit the first year or so but not too much. We had one on the end of our dock end it was fine for years in years, just a long galvanized pole. The other option is use polls as guides and get some 55 gallon plastic drums and float it. You could even make a giant party deck and make it detachable so you can take it out in the middle
